Kholat is a game developed by independent studio IMGN.PRO, inspired by true events known as the "Dyatlov Pass Incident". We follow the path of a group of Russian students, that went for an expedition in the northern Ural Mountains. The team does not reach its goal, the entire crew dies in mysterious circumstances.

Player is thrown into the area where the tragedy occurred, years after the actual event, with a chance to discover the real course of the tragedy. Atmosphere of anxiety and dread is created by fear management system. It is responsible for precise dosing of fear and uncertainty, based on what the player is doing, making each gameplay a unique experience.

First time I've heard about this.

It's a really weird and intriguing case, I don't think anyone has ever proved what happened

Plus there's a lot of general misinformation about what condition they were discovered in

I saw this in a preview video for the games upcoming up in June, they mentioned something about finding the bodies with no tongues or faces or something.

I'm not seeing much information about how it actually plays. Is there combat or survival mechanics, or is this more of a walking-simulator sort of thing (albeit less linear)?

Yep. Not terrible, but not very memorable either. In fact I don't even really remember what the bad thing(s) ended up being. Still though it's a really interesting case and I hope to play this game someday. Sean Bean was a good get for a small team like this too.

About the ending of the movie

wasnt it about portals or something?
i kinda liked the movie also, but more the build up then the final part of the movie...

but im curious about this game will check out reviews.

Super interested in this game.

I was shocked that what is essentially an indie game/studio got Sean Bean for their game. It's not unheard of for smaller games to get talent for their games, but I just find it fascinating in this situation.

Can't wait to play it!

Sounds really cool. I hope they don't try to put any overt supernatural twists to it.

I wonder how they were able to get Sean Bean to do this.
Also i feel stupid for thinking this is coming out October 6th.

I would assume they paid him money.

Plus, he does voice over for adverts in the UK regularly, so doing game narration isn't too far out of line with of his usual work, really.

No, there was one without a tongue. A lot of information was lost, but signs pointed towards an avalanche.

I too am curious about this. The steam tags say exploration game, so I imagine it'll be something ala Gone Home. Would love to know if anyone knows more though.

Sean Bean will do anything for money :p

Stream makes me think of a Dear Esther with snow

yeah the trailer gave me very strong Chinese Room/Dear Esther vibes. not sure how i feel about that. Dear Esther was kind of a one-time thing that I didn't really feel like repeating. at least Gone Home added some additional storytelling layers/interactivity.

I think this game has creatures. You have watch out for signs of them, and there are ways to avoid them.

Been playing this for a bit tonight for review and this is something else. The atmosphere alone is just amazing, but I also love that you are literally dumped in the wilderness with nothing but a map and compass.

That is all you have to work out the story, there are no on screen markers telling you where your next objective is, or even a HUD map to see if you are going in the right direction. You need to be able to map read.

That sense of not knowing where you may be at any one time, mixed with the beautiful visuals and outstanding score, mean this is something I am in love with.

My favourite feature of Far Cry 2 was the map and compass stuff and this takes it up a notch.

Saw the trailer on Steam. Love the music, and Sean Bean seems like a great narrator. Get the impression he wouldn't last very long as usual. Game looks amazing but also seems on the vein of Dear Esther. I'm not particularly in the mood for that kind of thing right now, but will no doubt check it out later

From what I gather, there's some kind of creature that you need to be aware of and avoid, so it's not simply harmless exploration

Out now btw. Very creepy and nice looking.

Yep, I just died. :) But I reckon there's lots of running around so be prepared for that.

How large are the map areas? i initially thought this was some corridor walking simulator experience.
