I feel like the record just scratched to a stop and everyone is looking at Sklorenz.
So be it. The flight sections don't feel as tight and well thought out as something like StarFox, S&P, or Panzer Dragoon to name the big ones. But again, I'm only at like Chapter 5 and I have no idea how long the game is. I loved the section in what I think was Chapter 4 that involved dodging horizontal rock formations while fighting enemies which was then followed by enemies that blew rings of poison smoke or something. I haven't played the game for a few days now because I've been busy, but that section was the one of the only real exciting portions of the flight portion so far (still the best part of the game, easy). I really feel like the screen is just too damn small and while the stylus controls work well, they don't feel natural to me. It works, but it's not as fun as it has been in the past with a traditional controller or the wii remote. I don't like playing it on my 3DS. It's a hassle and it stinks being forced to use a stand or play while resting the system on my lap or wherever.
The ground section is where stylus aiming actually feels a little more natural due to how the handle it, but everything else about ground battle is just clunky and awkward. I really wish the ground portion had also been on-rails with a slightly alternative control scheme or something.
The game's definitely not bad, and I picked it up day one for 30 bucks at Best Buy, so I don't feel ripped off or anything. I'm certainly the odd man out for the moment though.
The problem is that you need to distinguish between the blue and purple shots to damage the boss -and- avoid taking damage; shooting the WRONG color projectile hurts you... very, very quickly.
Dang, of all the color combinations too. That sucks dude. I'm a mile away from that point now, but maybe a FAQ or a bit of trial and error will get you there. GAF has had threads about blind people beating video games based on sound after all.
Edit:
the game has two different problems with the controls: holding it, and aiming the reticle. which one is bothering you?
holding it can be fixed by using the stand or re-mapping controls. aiming can be fixed by practice or adjusting the reticle options. although if you're having a problem with both, it can take a bit to get used to. i would suggest finding a comfortable place to practice if that's the case, and it'll get easier to play the moment the controls click.
Just noticed your post. The stand has been best for me, but I don't really play my handheld where using the stand even makes any sense. I played on a stool at the bar in the kitchen which was okay, but that's not exactly where'd I'd like to sit while playing this game. The only games I play in the kitchen are iOS time sink games while I wait for range to heat up. I did fix the options for aiming which helped ground play a ton (less swiping to move the camera), but that really doesn't fix the broken ground play for me at all. Controlling the aim, camera, moving, dodging, dodging while attacking.. maybe I'm alone, but it's just a fucking mess. I can get by fine on bosses up to level 5 because you just bullshit your way through it without worrying about. Dodge, dash, dash, aim, fiiiiiiiiiiiiire, dodge, dash, dash... and I say that like I've got some sort of momentum or pattern, but I don't. The controls are a mess, but I can get by.
Hopefully the controls will stick soon. Sorry to be party pooper in this thread
Gonna get another five chapters or so in by the weekend I'm sure, and as long as the flight sections improve I'll be happy enough. I've yet to try multiplayer, but I'm not exactly looking forward to it since it's all ground combat.
