Random history fact to add irony the next time your eyes wander around
Amazon Pandora:

AMAZON: Word History: In classical legend the Amazons were a tribe of warrior women. Their name is supposedly derived from Greek a-mazos, "without a breast," because according to the legend they cut off their right breasts so as to be better able to shoot with a bow and arrow. This folk etymology, like most folk etymologies, is incorrect, but the Amazons of legend are not so completely different from the historical Amazons, who were also warriors. The historical Amazons were Scythians, an Iranian people renowned for their cavalry. The first Greeks to come into contact with the Iranians were the Ionians, who lived on the coast of Asia Minor and were constantly threatened by the Persians, the most important of the Iranian peoples. Amazn is the Ionian Greek form of the Iranian word ha-mazan, "fighting together." The regular Greek form would be hamazn, but because the Ionians dropped their aitches like Cockneys, hamazn became amazn, the form taken into the other Greek dialects.

And on that note...

I did it, I beat the game on 9.0 intensity. Now I don't have to play the last chapter ever again
because I hate that it's basically a dumb gimmick level to end the game.

Is it possible to play this game without the stylus? Really don't like to use it for anything other than micro-managing in JRPGs.

There are buttons-only configurations available in the control options, but I strongly recommend you use the stylus. I normally hate using the stylus too -- but here it's such a perfect fit. It really sings. :)

Yes, but is it feasible to make progress with them? I realize stylus-centric control is the default and generally preferred, but I'm really hesitant to use it. Part of the reason I struggled to enjoy The World Ends With You.

Um, no? More like an awesome shmup!

I have problems with it because it throws out the majority of the gameplay elements the game was built on in favor of said gimmick. That, and
it's a level that is entirely Air Battle but they also removed the special attack, while adding annoyances like infinitely respawning flower lasers and basically filling the screen with projectiles. It then adds a completely new stylus gimmick just for the sake of screwing you up if you weren't paying attention, and a final portion that subverts what every other air battle taught you about constantly moving around to dodge things - the best way to tackle the end is to move as little as possible, slowly leading the one laser around while dipping around the other two.

Overall, it just bothers me that they felt the need to end the game on this kind of gimmick, as opposed to something more like the rest of the game. I feel like a level like Chapter 24, as frustrating as that was, is more representative of what I would have liked from a final chapter.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree with the statement that it's a gimmick.
It's essentially flight gameplay at its most pure. No "get out of jail free" cards; just you and your reflexes, knowing when to glide around enemy fire, when to shoot, when to go for charge shots over rapid fire. The bit where you line up the cursor to guide Medusa is just there for sake of an awesome moment, and stems naturally from the "line up the targets" falling mechanic done several times already. And the bit where you have to carefully thread your way around the lasers of Final Hades is a nice change of pace, especially if you're on your last sliver of health. The whole scenario just kept escalating, crazier and crazier, and you can approach it different ways -- sometimes I pick off the guns in the varios stages, to give myself breathing room with the weak point, while other times I feel it's more prudent to target the weak spot first and simply dodge the incoming fire.
All in all, a great finale, rich in spectacle and full of intense gameplay.

If this entire game were a
shooter in its purest form
, I would agree with your assessment. However, I'm just as happy to agree to disagree here.

Every time I start this game up I start worrying about my L button.

It almost makes me not want to play the game.

My R button already lost it's clicky sound because I use it so much to speed up the Streetpass stuff.
I worry that my L button will eventually break after playing this game constantly. :(

two exchanges that I loved during the game:

"FLOOR ICE CREAM GIVES ME HEALTH!"

*minor boss spoilers*

Hades! Pit! Hades!!! Pit!!! HADES! PIIIIT!

Just my overall impressions, spoilered just in case:

Well I wont quote the whole thing due to the size but that was a solid read and I agree with most of it, though I don't think liking the ground sections most is a minority opinion at this point, ground stages are the real meat of the game if you ask me.

Will QA for food.
Finished chapter 9. It was a good ride. This is an amazing game, I wonder how it has sold.

How is this one?

Flintlock Staff
Ranged: 5 stars (and an outline of one... Still dunno what that means)
Melee: 5 stars.
Value: 287

Overall defense: +1
Burning: +3
Stamina: +1
In-peril autododge: +2
Speed: -4

Heavy speed decrease, but it really doesn't seem to hurt me much. Wayyyy harder to hit people with, but much better at range than the black club.

Stats are good, but I mean staffs are already slow as it is.

Staff's are already slow in the first place, so that speed -4 is killer. I would use transparency on it and tirelessness that way you can move around and not be seen while picking people off.

Already using the latter. Don't have the first yet.

Is there a good fusing guide anywhere yet?

Does anyone have the same compulsion to try to finish the levels on 9.0 before going further?
I am finally managing to finish almost all the chapter (so far) on the hardest, but I have problems with chapter 9. Are there any useful tips for items to use? It is usually the flight section that bothers me. I usually use a set of invincibility, invisibility, healing as items to help me through 9.0 difficulty. Incase people are wondering I do circle like crazy and try to shoot the enemy before they hit me while flying.
However the default weapon is bothersome as I cant change it. That flight midboss is also annoying!

Upon playing this game for at least 30 hours I would say staff is my weapon of choice. Gotta love being able to hit far away!.

To be honest, that whole thing was a copypasta from something I wrote on a different forum only a few days after the game came out. At the time, there seemed to be a lot of aggro aimed at the ground stages, so I felt part of a minority then. Guess that sentiment is a bit outdated now though.

Been playing the online multiplayer a lot recently, and doing well too. Especially in FFA, Here's my set:

--

Weapon

Beam Claws
Value: 283
Ranged: ***
Melee: *****

Speed +3
Side-dash ch.shot +1
Standing cont. fire +3
Melee dash attack +2

Powers

Explosive Flame Lv.4
Effect Recovery Lv.1
Meteor Shower Lv.1
Transparency Lv.2
Brief Invincibility Lv.1
Interference Lv.1

--

Suits my style perfectly. I prefer to run around and pick off my enemy with charged shots and powers before going in close for the kill. The melee dash bonus and my increased speed make it pretty easy to zip around without being needlessly caught in a clusterfuck. If the worst does happen, I can always use Brief Invincibility/Transparency to get away or to launch a free attack. Rather useful in LvD too, as it allowed me to hunt and hurt the angel provided I'm not one myself. Of course, my value makes it pretty dangerous to go all out, but I think I'm pretty balanced overall.

Beat the level once and you'll be able to change your weapon by hitting an icon on the chapter. You won't be able to kill the Ornes any more, but for me it was very much worth it. I'd suggest just letting yourself clear it on a lower difficulty first and then going back for it.

If you like staves this is pretty good, the speed -4 really isn't a huge deal since you don't move that much. If i were you I'd use powers like tirelessness and light foot to help you get to your sniping spot, and then use powers like super speed and warp to escape trouble when someone gets too close to you.

Today we should hopefully get some info on how well this game has sold in the US. I really hope it's done well because it would be a shame if it turned into another Earthbound situation.

Just saw this easter egg on GFaqs

I'm Finished! Easter Egg

When you die in a stage and the hearts spill out of the fiend's cauldron, if you hold down on the stick you will see a short scene of the spilled hearts tumbling into the Underworld and an 8-bit Reaper from the original Kid Icarus getting startled.

Has anyone here tried this?

I fucking hate you. I've been mass-producing Scoprio Staves and Gemini Orbiters to match with my badass Ore Club to make Beam Claws, but NONE of them carry the +4 speed attribute I desire over. And I've made, like, seven of them.

Yeah I was having the same problem with a Crusader Blade. I got the Shot Range +2 and the Melee Dash +3 but only a 4.5/4 damage split, no speed+ and no added effect like Paralysis or Freeze. I eventually sort of gave up and made a decent one, but they're no Beam Claws :)

I remember someone asking earlier why Phosphora was called Anbar in the spanish version and while it must of been a million pages back, I have an explanation!
I remembered in the His Dark Materials books, which take place in like an alternate, steampunk-y universe, they call electricity "Anbaric Current", which had to do with the Greeks linking Amber to static electricity or smthn. I'll let Wikipedia explain:

Amber is discussed by Theophrastus, possibly the first historical mention of the material, in the 4th century BC. The Greek name for amber was ηλεκτρον (elektron), "formed by the sun", and it was connected to the sun god (Helios), one of whose titles was Elector or the Awakener.[6] According to the myth, when Helios' son Phaëton was killed, his mourning sisters became poplars, and their tears became the origin of elektron, amber
The modern terms "electricity" and "electron" derive from the Greek word for amber, and come from William Gilbert's research showing that amber could attract other substances.[10] The word "electron" was coined in 1891 by the Irish physicist George Stoney whilst analyzing elementary charges for the first time
So there you go. Spanish poster, I hope you're still reading the thread :D
Aint etymology fun!

I've gotten Speed+4 transferred over with Stamina+4 but it seems that everything that wants to fuse with it wants to give me shitty stars. Seems its too good of a combo QQ

edit: running speed +3 or +4 would probably be better, it achieves nearly the same desired effect and also doesn't weight so heavily in star determination (From what i've seen at least)

WTF is the bow that Pit has in Smash and the boxart? I thought it was the first weapon you get but it isn't. Anyone?

Nice, just tried it, good stuff!

That's the Palutena Bow. (not the Silver Bow--they look similar, but the Palutena Bow is gold) You have to unlock it by beating a certain late game chapter (
Chapter 24
) in eleven minutes or less. I think you need to have beaten the game as well (I think, don't quote me on that).

Yeah, it's definitely the Palutena Bow. In addition to the color, the significant thing that lets you tell them apart is how the Palutena Bow gives Pit those halos around his wrist (which move around the arrow when it's drawn, like on the boxart), which the Silver Bow doesn't have. What seems interesting though is that in Brawl, the halos were around his left wrist, whereas in the Idol for the Palutena Bow, they seem to have shifted to his right wrist instead (and of course meaning, the hand he holds the bow with has changed as well, which remains the case for the other Idols of him and Dark Pit). Wonder why the change...

And it's just doing the first thing, I believe.

Anybody fancy Arms? I just made this, I think its pretty good but I don't use arms much:

Electroshock Arm:

Range: ****
Melee: ****
Value: 281

Poison +1
Speed +2
Fwd-Dash Ch. Shot +2
Melee combo +2

Does around 140 for a forward dash charge shot and 175 melee combo damage. Not to slow either cause of the speed bonus.

Also just got this Orbitars from a multiplayer game which seem good but I have never even touched orbitars so I don't know how to play with em:

Boom Orbitars

Range: * 1/2
Melee: ****
Value: 300

Melee defense +3
Knockback defense +1
Speed +2
Evasion +4
Melee Combo +4
Effect Duration +1

I like this game, but I hate this game.

It's cause so much strain on my right arm that I can only play about one chapter a day, so I'm up to chapter 7. I love the game, soundtrack, and the graphics are gorgeous, but jesus it's tearing me up. I've tried with the stand, without the stand, face buttons, etc. Circle Pad Pros don't restock until July, so as a lefty, I can't try it that way.

I'm tempted to just say fuck it and get Revelations or something. My arm can't take much more. Any tips?

This game is SO GOOD. I'm not really getting why people love the story so far, though I'm only at chapter
17
so far. I love the gameplay, though. I've beaten most of my chapters so far at 5 or higher. The only one I've beaten at 9.0 is chapter 1, but I've beaten others with 7.0 or 8.0, so I'm getting there. Right now I'm rocking:

Bomber Arm
Overall Defense +3
Poison +1
Shot cancellation +1
Speed +2 (HATE this in solo but oh well)
Backward-dash ch. shot +1
Melee dash attack +1

Ranged: 6
Melee: 0.5
Value: 337

Amazingly, I actually bought this from the shop for about 60K or so on sale. I still have yet to turn any of my arms into hearts... guess it's the collector in me. Likewise, I have done hardly any fusing. Just to be sure, if you fuse weapons (not gems), you lose the original weapons, right?
