Kid Icarus...

Offtopic answers:

a) We need more games with credit cards.

b) The last boss was incredibly easy because you could place yourself in one spot where the last boss couldn't hit you.

c) I don't remember Eggplant Wizards being a part of Greek Mythology.

a) yeah

b) several times

c) a game

2-1 is the first vertical stage. The maze levels kinda suck because of those OMG ANNOYING Eggplant Wizards (especially 2-3; in the 3rd room you can get auto-Eggplanted).

The last level song is cool though, I mp3'd that the hard way awhile ago. There's even Metroid-looking badguys in world 3.

Sometime I hope to get the Famicom Mini cart (if it's still around).

Eggplant Wizard is Nintendo's reward to the world. The Wizard knows all, sees all, eggplants all.

Kid Icarus was cool because it seemed like a nice happy kids game on the surface, but it really had a dark side to it.

Hellish physical endurance tests? Transmogrification? Credit card debt?

I would like to know this as well. I heard the poor draw distance/memory of the GB made it stupidly tough to tell what enemies are on screen before you could kill them.

Old school Nintendo fan here, but I must say I have never played Kid Icarus. I'll DL it when I get a Revolution.

I liked the GameBoy game a lot as a kid, but I think it was much easier than the 1st one. In the game boy game you could flap your wings a lilttle before falling :)

Yep, had a fancy name, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. I remember it being basically a portable version of the NES game, not bad but probably would seem hard on the eyes and a bit repetitive these days. Never did get around to finishing it. Popped the old cart into the GBA a couple years ago for fun and found it to be harder than I remembered... It had battery save too, no more passwords like the original.

Too bad it's the only sequel the game has ever seen. Was it done by Yokoi and the original Icarus team?

Nintendo is really underestimating the sales potential of a nice R&D1 made revival of this franchise on the DS.

Played the NES version but never beat it. Own the GB version and beat it several times. The draw distance wasn't so bad most of the time but now and then you'd get raped by a fast moving enemy from out of nowhere. Namly the damn birds that steal your stuff forcing you to buy it back from the shopkeeper. :(

I liked the silent movie dialogue and the general charm the game had, but I never got into it. I always died in the first level because I always fell to my death. I'll try it again on Revolution, though (for the right price).

Same. One of the few games I missed out on. :\

It's true, my cousin's best friend's brother's room-mate knew a guy who saw his friend reach said side scrolling stage.

The gameboy game is fantastic. Don't play it down, haters. The screensize isn't a hinderance it's by design, controls are a lot better than NES version and a few things are changed around. Pretty much the same situation as Metroid vs. Metroid 2 for me. Metroid 2 wins every time.

Never really cared much for the game - too much cheapness going on (the Eggplant Wizards, vertically scrolling levels where it's so easy to die). The music (especially in the labyrinths) is damn good, though. A SOTN style sequel in 2D would be to die for though.

Huh I don't remember the scrolling in the vertical levels being a pain in the NES version but we're going back like 15 years or so...The GB version didn't have a scrolling issue. You sould drop back down to backtrack which was a godsend seeing as I'd miss jumps all the time in the higher levels.

i played it. it was crap, like most games in those days. nostalgia is a powerful thing for some.

Played it when I was a kid. Got past the first stage once. Used a code to play the last level and finish the game. It sucked that it made you invincible though. Or rather, I think it did.

a) yes

b) several times; straight through, with ultimate password, with other ultimate password, with friend's password, and serveral times on GB

c) >>> j00

Another cult classic that made me annoy the hell out of my relatives to let me borrow the cart so I can play it just one more time again and again and again and again.

And Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters isn't bad as well, it holds up just as well (and can be beaten in under an hour or so). Despite the lower resolution (the original isn't that much higher res than the GB) the game doesn't hamper the gameplay much. The only thing different about the two is the GB scrolls left and right as you climb vertically and as long as you know what you're doing or don't just jump blindly there shouldn't be any problems. The game also lets you pause the game and scroll the screen until Pitt is on the edge of the screen to let you see what's originally off the viewing area. Also, the game controls a bit smoother than the NES game as well as I noticed in the NES Pit sometimes has a delay when you jump, shoot etc, thus making the game a bit easier (though the game is easier in general anyway). Either that or it's just my imagination.

Though I still prefer NES Paltena overall (ULTImATE PAssWORDS!!!)

While mobygames doesn't say anything, my GB cartt still has the last level save on it so give me a few minutes to beat it and I'll list the credits.

And I'm HIGHLY disappointed that, until this post there has YET to be mention of the other ultimate password this side of JUSTIN BAILEY and Up, Up :p
(ie: 0COamy 1DPbnz 2EQco? 3ERdp! , all case sensitive)

And like said before Kid Icarus >>>> * >>> you

hmmm...MOST games have always been crap. However, IMO, Kid Icarus holds up better than the majority of polygonal schlock we see today. fuck realism, games need more eggplant wizards.

Quick update: There is no list of credits after you beat the game, only Pit jumping ever so higher towards the sun while showing all the enemies in the game sitting on clouds (with no text not even to tell their names)
ultimate flying too high and losing his wings
thus plummetting to his death.

In other news, those who enjoyed both Kid Icarus games should find and pick up a copy of Balloon Kid. It's Balloon Fight but with PLATFORMING and it's made by roughly the same guys who also did the origignal Kid Icarus and Metroid. The entire game is right to left with forced scrolling but plays great (even today, I just haven't beaten it yet) and the soundtrack (like the two aforementioned games) ROCKS.

And I agree, Kid Icarus is another game that has gameplay that stands the test of time. (BUY BALLOON KID)

Balloon Kid is just like the "Balloon Trip" part of Balloon Fight, right? And also Hello Kitty World on the Famicom?

No the hell way. It's more like a Super Mario platformer with Balloon Fight's loose balloon 'physics' (heavier emphasis on balloon battles, and stomping on regular enemies usually don't kill them). All the levels in the game are forced scrolling so you can't inch your way through. When you run out of ballons, if you manage to fall on dry land (even at great heights) you will survive and will be able to make up to two more balloons. You can even release the balloons you have in your character's hands and run along the ground at roughly the same speed as Mario does (the lead character, Alice, even has a quick stop frame like Mario). And if you do release your balloons you can still retrieve them if you catch them in the air while they slowly float upwards (she jumps even higher than Mario given the two character's ratio). And then there's BOSS battles (which require you to stomp on their heads for the first few, the rest no idea, though I'd imagine it's a similar gameplay). :p

The game also contain a Balloon Trip for those like that style of play, just don't release your balloons.

And never heard of Hello Kitty World.

BUY BALLOON KID!!

I have Balloon Kid, it is a forgotten Nintendo classic. Hard as Hell though.

One of the only games I remember that scrolls right to left.

No, it's a (forced scrolling) platformer. Balloon Kid has a Balloon Trip mode, too.

Thanks for the heads up on BK. I had no idea it existed. Balloon Fight has always been my favorite Joust knockoff, and it's awesome it had a meta-sequel.

YES

YES

YES

My brother and I both would take turns until we beat it. Very cheap game. We picked this up after getting through Ghosts and Goblins only to find out we would have to go through it again just to see its ending.

The final stage was the side-scroller. If I remember correctly, you get Athena's shield, some special wings, and lightning arrows. You basically fly up and down and shoot shit while the stage scroll on it's own (think Gradius) until you reach Medusa, who is just a big eyeball and head stuck in a wall.

I have the GBA import rerelease... if you build your levels early, this game is a snap. Otherwise, yeah... it's pretty tough in some spots.

I think it's a cool game.

Kid Icarus was too hard? Like unplayable hard? I don't remember it being all that bad, but thats the impression i'm getting from people here..

Man, you guys really need training wheels in your games nowadays, don't you? =)

(and Deadly Towers wasn't hard, just tedious.)

This game was way too hard. Like Deadly Towers hard and just as frustrating.

To those complaining that this game was too hard...

It's nothing compared to the Ghosts n' Goblins games. Hell, Megaman 1 was harder to beat than Kid Icarus (if you didn't use the Elec-Beam Cheat)

I rented the NES game in 1989 or so. I got to the last castle/dungeon level, then lost my sheet of paper I'd been writing passwords on. I had heard of the code ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS, which I believe started me on that same level, but I think with better equipment than I previously had. I finished off the game from there. Yeah, it was a fun, unique game and I'd love to see a modern 2D sequel.
