Killer Instinct Gold for the Nintendo 64 is now available on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

What is up with still not being able to turn OFF the ugly ass borders with your profile icon?

Who even makes these decisions? What is the point of constantly seeing that? In widescreen games it's gone so WTF is up with this shit?

Infuriatingly awful design. Only reason why I don't use NSO.

I never understood why people liked KI. It's not fluid. It doesn't " feel " good to play like SF2 does. It's just about how many dial a combos can you remember.

And a lot of games were jank as hell back then, but we still had a good time with them. We weren't all jaded and thinking only of fps, pixel counts, input lag, etc. We just wanted to have fun, and KI Gold was just dumb fun.

I don't think KI stands the test of time like some classics that I still go back to occasionally ,and I'd probably boot it up once now and that's it. However I'll always have fond memories of the times I had with my friends playing that game on a tiny ass Magnavox 17" TV lol.

Dude I was alive back then .. I was in the arcades.. there were a lot of well playing capcom and snk fighters. Even MK2 which came out before KI felt good to play and wasn't as janky. The draw was that it was 3d rendered and had FMV

Terrible port but I played the hell of it back in 97. I'll probably sink a few hours into it for nostalgia.

Hopefully Microsoft ports the most recent KI to Switch 2.

So was I. Why else would I be saying the things I say? I'm not saying it was a "good" game. I'm saying that not every game I had fun with were exactly good games, but saying the memories with how they were played were fun times.

Also yes, those snk and Capcom fighters were better games and I played the hell out of those too. However I have a lot of great memories of my buddy bringing over his N64 while I had a PS1, and all of us playing No Mercy, WCW vs NWO, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, KI Gold, etc.

What is this revisionist history where KI was ass? Unless you're talking about Orchid or another character, KI fucking owned.

The music (no other fighting game tops it), the combos, the finishers, the style, the animated backgrounds, and was defined it about all else:

Goes to attack, about to land first hit on opponent *COMBO BREAKER* Seriously if you had any string of combos play out on you, it's just because you sucked. Any good player would break a combo as soon as it started. Players with skill NEVER lost in KI, there was no random everyone can win Soul Calibur or Tekken BS.

Then you had the awesome shadow moves and lots more.

I played them all, in the arcades, and KI was always top tier with MvC1+2.

People have always been snobby about fighting games. But I don't recall people shitting on KI during the 90s. The KI2 machine always had a ton of people lined up to play at my arcade. Maybe it depends on where you lived.

Balls 3D, War Gods and Bio Freaks exist if people need crappy fighters from the 90s to shit on.

Long story that I won't go into, but back in school there was another kid that had like 10 nicknames given to him and one of them was Balls 3D lol.

People shitting all over KI wow......if you were alive back in the arcade days, the KI games were one of THE games to play! You couldnt go into any arcade without the soundtrack and game attract mode immediately catching your ears (fun fact, they did that on purpose to make it super loud) and the back and forth fights and the loud ass announcer, etc.....those were the days!!!

KL Gold always felt horrible on Controls, due the N64 Controller design...Not as the SNES and OG Arcade first KL, which felt way good. But maybe with a Switch pro controller it can improve a lot. I´ll test it tonight...

Didn't even know there was a Gold sequel. Looks a lot worse than the OG.
Gold it´s just KL2 with real time 3D backgrounds and animation frames cut off, because N64 couldn´t run the original arcade FMV backgrounds from KL and KL2, which needed a hard drive. I still play those two arcade originals on my modded OG Xbox, which caqn run them amazingly, thanks precisely to i´ts hard drive.

and you dont "remember" combos--the combo *system* is the same for every character.
it was so hard to find a friend who actually understood how to do combos, combo breakers, etc.
game doesnt reward button mashing.

ps sf2 is amazing, and ki gold sucks compared to ki2 arcade.

It was released during the peak of 90's CGI pre-rendered graphics era. This and Donkey Kong Country being the first ones that made the technology popular. I think part of Killer Instinct's success was that it was at least a decent fighting game, unlike Rise of The Robots which used similar tech but was one of the worst games ever made.

Rise of the Robots blew me away visually, but yeah, terrible gameplay.

Sad, what a broken mess it is. Difficulty options dont work. I set it to very easy to get reaquainted with the controls and moves and the AI obliterates you without you getting a chance to move. Was looking forward to messing with this too, oh well.

How do you fuck up something so simple?

Disagree, the 3x2 layout of buttons lines up perfectly with the KI arcade button layout

If only the D-pad weren't crap.

I'd love to find a joystick with the proper layout to play this with. KI 1 & 2 were fucking amazing back in the the arcade days
