The draw distance is what interests me the most with this game. Being able to spot something interesting on the horizon is half the game.

Nope, they also offered animal crossing home paradise expansion & the Mario kart booster pass as "free" perks however if your sub expires they will stop working. While I have nso I made sure to buy the dlc separate as I don't want it tied to a subscription.
I have no idea exactly what happens either it'll act like it was never installed or it could nag you to goto eshop. However save files tend to be tied to the dlc so once you save it rarely will let you continue until you have the dlc again I have had a few switch games that have locked the saves like that.
