And a lot of games were jank as hell back then, but we still had a good time with them. We weren't all jaded and thinking only of fps, pixel counts, input lag, etc. We just wanted to have fun, and KI Gold was just dumb fun.I never understood why people liked KI. It's not fluid. It doesn't " feel " good to play like SF2 does. It's just about how many dial a combos can you remember.

I don't think KI stands the test of time like some classics that I still go back to occasionally ,and I'd probably boot it up once now and that's it. However I'll always have fond memories of the times I had with my friends playing that game on a tiny ass Magnavox 17" TV lol.
Dude I was alive back then .. I was in the arcades.. there were a lot of well playing capcom and snk fighters. Even MK2 which came out before KI felt good to play and wasn't as janky. The draw was that it was 3d rendered and had FMV
People have always been snobby about fighting games. But I don't recall people shitting on KI during the 90s. The KI2 machine always had a ton of people lined up to play at my arcade. Maybe it depends on where you lived. What is this revisionist history where KI was ass? Unless you're talking about Orchid or another character, KI fucking owned.
The music (no other fighting game tops it), the combos, the finishers, the style, the animated backgrounds, and was defined it about all else:
Goes to attack, about to land first hit on opponent *COMBO BREAKER* Seriously if you had any string of combos play out on you, it's just because you sucked. Any good player would break a combo as soon as it started. Players with skill NEVER lost in KI, there was no random everyone can win Soul Calibur or Tekken BS.
Then you had the awesome shadow moves and lots more.
I played them all, in the arcades, and KI was always top tier with MvC1+2.
Long story that I won't go into, but back in school there was another kid that had like 10 nicknames given to him and one of them was Balls 3D lol.Balls 3D, War Gods and Bio Freaks exist if people need crappy fighters from the 90s to shit on.
Gold it´s just KL2 with real time 3D backgrounds and animation frames cut off, because N64 couldn´t run the original arcade FMV backgrounds from KL and KL2, which needed a hard drive. I still play those two arcade originals on my modded OG Xbox, which caqn run them amazingly, thanks precisely to i´ts hard drive.Didn't even know there was a Gold sequel. Looks a lot worse than the OG.
because it fucking rules.I never understood why people liked KI. It's not fluid. It doesn't " feel " good to play like SF2 does. It's just about how many dial a combos can you remember.
It was released during the peak of 90's CGI pre-rendered graphics era. This and Donkey Kong Country being the first ones that made the technology popular. I think part of Killer Instinct's success was that it was at least a decent fighting game, unlike Rise of The Robots which used similar tech but was one of the worst games ever made.I never understood why people liked KI. Disagree, the 3x2 layout of buttons lines up perfectly with the KI arcade button layoutKL Gold always felt horrible on Controls, due the N64 Controller design...Not as the SNES and OG Arcade first KL, which felt way good. But maybe with a Switch pro controller it can improve a lot. I´ll test it tonight...
Dk64 is needed. Not many Rare games left to bring over. I wonder if we ever see Conker.
