Kim Jong-Un's half-brother killed in Malaysia

Clothed, sober, cooperative
For those of you who don't know, he has been living in Macau for years and has nothing to do with North Korea really.

He's widely seen as the best hope for a smooth transition in the event of a coup or collapse. This is bad and has everything to do with north Korea.

And Korea GAF - forgive my clumsy eating but isn't fratricide PARTICULARLY bad in Korea because of the whole Brother thing they got going on?

Not that the average citizen will even hear about this...

Taking out the competition, blame it on another country.

They've wanted him gone a long time. Kim Jong-Un knows his regime collapsing and is trying to consolidate all control. Imagine if Kim Jong-Il eldest son started to make statements as Kim Jong-Un is barely hanging onto control in NK. He could have been the voice NK needed for a peaceful transition with SK. Defections have never been higher. We may finally see the collapse of the Il-Sung fascist/dicatorial regime.

Sounds like Kim Jong-Un feared the news of being overthrown, and got his brother killed to deny a possible heir. A lot of rambling about him not been accepted as leader anymore, yadda yadda.

Yeah the killing of his uncle by placing him in front of artillery fire shows how unhinged this little shit is. Defections have risen to the point you are even seeing officers of the military defect. Coupled with the US and SK being fed up, food aid down, massive flooding and even China not standing for their shit because THAAD defenses and a renewed US presence screws them up as does a more rejuvenated Japanese and SK military means they are on their last legs. He doesn't have the support like his father and grandfather had.

One, didn't even know he had a brother.

Two, that's a shitty way to go.

Three, what does this mean for international relations?

Nothing much besides sort of confirming that Kim Jong-Un is worried about his rule. No one cared about the brother for so long because they didn't envision a scenario where he would be remotely revered or followed. But an increasingly fracturous rule in NK means a direct heir grandson of Kim Il-Sung and the actual eldest son of Kim Jong-Il would be received warmly and favorably amongst NK citizenry fed up with Jong-Un or dynastic dictatorial control.

But international relations, NK has always sent assassins abroad. Countries like Russia, China routinely do these things. Even Israel. Malaysia might be pissed NK would send assassins in and kill someone who resided there or tourists. Think of it like the movie Munich. Also, note how they never killed him in Macau which is Chinese soil, but in Malaysia because China would not tolerate it and protected him.

Man this feels so surreal lol

Great post. Good insight.

I'm gonna assume he was quite heavily guarded, so I guess I'm sort of morbidly impressed they got to him.

That said, I hope NK is liberated soon, this shit has been left going on for far too long now.

He most definitely was not. This guy is a player around Macau and China. He had a house in China before numerous attempts were made on his life.

He didn't put him in front of artillery fire, that was allegedly his Defence Minister. Nor did he feed him to dogs. They're unsubstantiated rumours with very little factual basis.

Defections have plummeted since Kim Jong Un assumed control. The tightening up of security around the Yalu River is the reason for that.

Among the people, professionals and intelligentsia, he has significantly more support than his father. He has the likeness of Kim Il Sung (literally 'Their Sun') and thus people assume he has the makings of a successor. The economy has grown, rice prices have fallen, and Pyongyang is being renovated to appease the bureaucrats.

Officers are defecting now because their free ride of doing absolutely nothing is over. The only reason his father remained in control was due to his coddling up to the military. He invented Songun (military first) primarily to ensure that generals with swathes of troops wouldn't attempt a coup. The rest could rot for all he cared; and they did. Un has pursued aggressive nuclear armament because it ideologically renders foot soldiers and expensive materiel obsolete. He can take younger recruits out of the military and assign them to reformation projects that the country desperately needs. The old fart Generals aren't best amused, and thus may throw a hissy fit. The missile launches and rhetoric have been so widely publicised because it's Un trying to save face.

Love how they are reporting this on the Japanese news. Almost like he was a good guy and putting the slow, gentle talking narration over his slow motion clips. I mean it sounds like he was a nicer guy than his family, and in general seemed to wash his hands clean of those people publicly anyway.

Wonder how Malaysia will react and what not.

What? Defections have never been higher. They are higher year over year from last year and just recently the NK deputy ambassador to UK defected in London. Also, unsubstantiated because everything out of NK is propaganda, otherwise SK intelligence and many military experts in SK believe he was killed by being placed in front of an anti-aircraft barrage. The quickness and public arrest and downfall shows how worried Jong-Un was.

One of the biggest issues now is China is especially pissed at their ballistic missile test because it all but guarantees THAAD anti-missile and radars being placed in SK and possibly Japan and which will affect China severely as well as limit the force projection they are going for in the South China Sea.

From last year, yes. But last year was also the lowest number of recorded defections they've had for 11 years.

The Ministry of Unification has the numbers here:

I'm not going to defend a despot and say that it's a lie, but I assure you that you're thinking of the Defence Minister.

China's of course getting taken along for this ride as well, because more contracts and settlements could help ease this...but for the UN sanctions. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I don't think China's projection into the South China Sea will be affected by THAAD, will it?

At one time, he was under guard by the Chinese government, but apparently they grew tired of his traveling antics. Some say the Chinese just wanted him around in case they needed a regime change in NK.

This means war in the Kim family.

Kim Jong-nam's son, Kim Han-sol will rise to the occasion.

You're making a joke, but I hope the best for this guy. He actually seems level headed.

Arrest made

Malaysian authorities have detained a woman holding a Vietnamese passport in connection with the death of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

The Malaysia inspector general said in a statement that a 28-year-old woman, Doan Thi Huong, was positively identified from CCTV footage and was alone at the time of her arrest.

No other details were immediately available. Malaysian police were not immediately available for comment.

Earlier on Wednesday South Korea’s spy agency said two women believed to be North Korean operatives poisoned the 45-year-old exile in a shopping concourse at Kuala Lumpur international airport.

An Indonesian woman arrested for suspected involvement in the killing of the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un’s half-brother in Malaysia was duped into thinking she was part of a comedy show prank, Indonesia’s national police chief has said, citing information received from Malaysian authorities.

Tito Karnavian told reporters in Indonesia’s Aceh province that Siti Aisyah, 25, was paid to be involved in pranks.

He said she and another woman performed stunts which involved convincing men to close their eyes and then spraying them with water.

“Such an action was done three or four times and they were given a few dollars for it, and with the last target, Kim Jong-nam, allegedly there were dangerous materials in the sprayer,” Karnavian said. “She was not aware that it was an assassination attempt by alleged foreign agents.”

How you do you ensure the girl standing behind him doesn't die in this situation? Is she in on it?

Truly monstrous to have someone commit murder unknowingly
