Kirby's Air Ride appreciation thread

Because it doesn't get enough love, and because I don't want MAF to whine about tainted threads:

The people talking shit about KAR - you're horribly incorrect.

I mean, I'm not trying to go on an Oli-esque "BUT YOU NEED 60+ HOURS TO REALLY GET INTO IT" tirade... but I'm just really amazed that so many people have written it off.

Three completely different modes of play from the start. Regular race, topdown race, build-a-robot-and-do-crazy-mini-games mode.

Some of the best track design ever. Of course, you wouldn't know that from playing it for a few seconds at your local kiosk! Waaaaaaay better track design than Mario Kart Double Dash - that's fucking right.

Deceptively "simple" game play. Before you hardcore motherfuckas rip open my flesh for that, let me tell you this: when you have to play games with kids, it's no fun to either 1) beat their ass into oblivion, so they never play again or 2) play your F game in an attempt for them to have a fair shot. KAR's the only game I've ever played where you can give yourself a fair handicap and be racing your fucking ASS off trying to beat people who haven't been playing videogames since the Space Invaders machine at Lox, Stock & Bagels. And it's not an UNFAIR advantage, either. Hard to explain to a bunch of people that have already decided the game sux.

60 FPS. 4P splitscreen. System link support, I think?

Great game, haters bedamned.

Can we get yer take on Quest 64 next? I've ben DYING for an outsider opinion on that one.

Never had a N64 until a few months ago. Didn't waste my time on shite games for it, either: I played Goldeneye, Blast Corps, Beetle Adventure Racing, the faggoty Mario Party games, and Sin & Punishment. Oh and Perfect Dark.

But just edit my post so that you own me or something. :)

The thing that makes me feel good about all this, is that thus far, no-one has been able to tell me WHY they don't like the game, other than the fact that it's Nintendo or it's Kirby.

It's too bad y'all are so jaded, you miss out on good games, you know?

Yes, and every night we cry ourselves to sleep. Then we wake up and start playing RE4 right away.

I LOLed.

You want a good 4P split screen 60fps racer with good game play on the Game Cube? Look no further than F-Zero GX. Thread over.

I think the thing is that many people at GAF have discussed why they don't like the game, so discussing it again in a brand new topic is not going to produce any valuable new content, ya know?

If you want to see why people hate Kirby Air Ride, I'm sure you can find plenty of posts around GAF that describe in great detail the reasons.

To put it as simply as possible, I hate Kirby Air Ride because it is the opposite of fun.

Oh god!

ULTIMATE END ALL TRUTH. THREAD 100% COMPLETED. ALL EMBLEMS LOCATED. IMAGE GALLERY UNLOCKED.

Kirby's Air Ride really wasn't my thing. I can see why "y'all" dig it so damn much, but it really didn't appeal to me. In reality, I just got bored. I didn't care. Whee, zoom zoom. I thought the mini-mode was a wonderful idea, and I had a bit of fun goofing about in there. The friends didn't care much for it, and gave me that "Can we please go back to Mario Kart now?" glare. In the end, there just wasn't enough to save the game from the shelving of doom.

Okay, then when I want to play some topdown racing on my GC, what do I do then? Or when I want to battle three of my friends in an effort to make the best robot? Don't say Custom Robo.

I'm kinda sad that you'd jump into the fray in such a manner, dude. I thought you were better than that.

Thanks for giving it a bit more detail.

My friends and I - big time Mario Kart fans - were disappointed in Double Dash. KAR took up the slack quite nicely... for us, at least.

KAR just felt horribly broken to me.

Invisible walls that ruin the whole flying thing, non-weighted power-ups (you can be in the lead and still be given the wheel power-up to let you get even further into the lead), tedious city mode, far too floaty top-down mode etc. etc. And the constant acceleration just led to a 'don't care' feeling, it disconnected you from the game.

The weapons are also in general useless, and because the fire button is also the brake button you have to cripple your driving ability in order to let them charge a decent amount. So you lose either way - brake and fire them off early, doing your opponent no damage or let them charge by not braking therefore slamming into the sides of the track and letting your opponent get ahead.

Whatever floats your boat though.

Yeah, no problem.

Most of the time, I'm all about these overlooked gems. I mean, hell, I've been playing P.N.03, again. And truthfully, I was pretty excited to give KAR a go, but there just wasn't enough to keep me entertained. It's a problem that I feel extends to most racers, and as such, is why I'm not a huge racing fan.

By the way, the track designs in KAR were pretty cool.

I'm kinda sad that you'd create a thread in appreciation of KIRBY'S AIR RIDE. I thought *YOU* were better than that.

Of course I wouldn't say anything about Custom Robo. It's just as crappy. :P

Bah! It's not a bad fucking game, man! I didn't make a damn Cabela's Dangerous Hunts thread.

The biggest misquote in GAF history. I said it gets better after than much time because you finally unlock everything. The game is good from the start.

I dunno, I had a lot of fun with it. I noticed a lot of people didn' 'get' the control scheme (I know, I know, doesn't seem possible). But a lot of the people I played it with would just race in the 'regular' fasion and weren't boost / sliding at all when in that game you should almost *always* be in the middle of a slide / boost (even on straight aways). The city mode was pretty inane but I liked exploring a bit.

As far as the F-Zero GX thing, yea, its a better game, but its prohibitively difficult for non gamers and even some of my more 'hardcore' friends will just give up after a few races because we were all getting our asses kicked by one or two people. Kirby's air ride is more of a pick up and play thing.

Kirby Air Ride plays much more like a snowboarding game than a racing game. If you snag a copy for $10 and go into it expecting a simplified snowboarding game, you won't be overly disappointed.

KAR isn't that bad.

The graphics and music are excellent. The 15 dollar price tag is worth the soundtrack, IMO.

City Mode is really fun, I just wish the ONE mini-game you play afterwards wasn't anti-climatic. You should have to play three random games after City Mode. That way it's a little balanced.

I have this game. It isn't the worst ever, definitely more fun multiplayer than it is single-player. I played it for a while and unlocked a lot of stuff, and then my oh so bright little sister deleted my save file. I haven't touched it since.

Wow. You're big time Mario Kart fans?! Does that make you the Grand Wizard of Videogame Quality?!

[MAF]This thread is great because now we know whose opinions not to listen to.[/MAF]

:D

I found the game to be interesting in it's own way. I thought it was a decent title...but then again, my brother and I played this game simultaneously, so the game had some multiplayer fun in the single player mode the entire time. I cannot imagine playing this game for very long alone. It just doesn't have the value a first-player game should. There were very little difference in the styles of games inside each of the three segments. I have admitted, after reading these comments and after playing the game alone for a bit, that this game was a huge dissapointment after SSBM. Hopefully, the Kirby GC game won't suck as much.

Oh, and there is one thing that rocks from this game: the music. So...Kirby-ish.

Yuck, no way, F-Zero GX is AWESOME, but as a single player game, I don't enjoy playing it multiplayer at all, it's not the same experience.

Haven't played Kirby Air Ride yet, but I want to.
