ROSEBURG, Ore. - A newborn kitten recently entered the world with two faces and, hopefully, at least nine lives.

Gemini was born Sunday with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes.

“I kind of feel sorry for her, because I can’t know for a fact if she’s going to live or die,” its owner, Lee Bluetear, told the (Roseburg) News-Review. “If she makes it, she should be a perfectly normal and healthy cat. Other than having two faces.”

Bluetear says Gemini is much stronger and drinking more milk than in her first few days, though feeding is still difficult.

Roseburg veterinarian Alan Ross, who examined the kitten on Tuesday, said he can’t estimate the kitten’s life span. He said when he first saw the kitten, he wouldn’t have given her more than a 10 percent chance of survival.

“With the three of our veterinarians here, we have a combined total of 50 years of experience,” Ross said. “We have never seen anything like this.”

If the kitten lives, she might need surgery to remove the extra tissue in between its two mouths, the vet said.

Bluetear has been breeding different kinds of animals, starting with dogs, since 1980. Roughly three years ago, she discovered a litter of smaller than normal kittens she calls “miniature cats.”

Gemini was born to a miniature mother and a full-size father.

“Everybody is totally amazed that this thing exists,” Bluetear said.

If you're implying that the kitten was more likely to be two-headed because of its breed, that's not necessarily true; various stages of conjoined twins occur naturally, albeit rarely, in all animals.

If there were several instances of malformed "small cats", that would be a different story, but this one case does not give reason for a call to stop the breeding.

Something really should be done about breeders like these. They should know better than to breed two types of cat that are so dramatically different from each other and expect any good results to come of it.

It's like with wolf hybrids. Part of the reason why wolf hybrids have such bad raps is because a lot of them really are unstable -- unscrupulous folks breed wolves with any bitch that walks in the door (if you'll pardon the pun), and the result is a dog with two sets of natural instincts that constantly fight with each other. It never turns out well. On the other hand, if you breed one with a kind of dog that shares a common ancestry, like a husky or malamute, you get a damn good pet.

In short, I would not be bragging to the media if I were responsible for this kitten.

Gemini, the two-headed kitten, dies

Veterinarians gave newborn feline slim chance of survivalThe Associated Press
Updated: 8:23 a.m. ET June 22, 2005ROSEBURG, Ore. - Gemini, the two-headed kitten born this month, is no more.

Owner Lee Bluetear said she didn’t know what caused the death of the unusual creature, which died Thursday in the town of Glide, but she said the kitten appeared very tired and did not want to eat.

The story and photo of Gemini was distributed worldwide. “I couldn’t believe how much interest there really was,” Bluetear said.

Veterinarians initially gave Gemini a meager chance of one long life, let alone nine. Gemini was born with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes.

Bluetear, 40, said things looked good at first. Gemini initially appeared strong and was drinking milk.

“Everybody is totally amazed that this thing exists,” Bluetear said at the time.
