Kobun Heat's "Ask Me Stuff About The Revolution" Thread

Frankly, the difference is virtually moot. So long as the game provides appropriate feedback to your motion, your brain will be tricked into believing whatever it needs to to play. However, the central issue here is the statement by Nintendo themselves that calibration is not needed, which conflicts with the idea of the cursor knowing exactly where on the screen you are pointing (as opposed to merely making it look like it does through visual cues). There is quite simply no magic bullet that can make it not require calibration for that with everything we have been told by Jim Merrick.

Which is not to say that some games might not actually require and use calibration to achieve that effect. In this way, the so-called 'laser pointer' effect is really a subset of the '3d mouse' functionality. This is imo the most realistic view of things.

I've already said that the laser function will not be used most of the time, but the same goes for the mouse functions. I dont even like calling the thing a 3D mouse as the way a mouse works is very restrictive, its not a mouse, but it can be made to work like one. I think most of the time it will be used for stuff like tap it to produce actions, swing it to do stuff and so on.

Heres a snippet from Iwata's speech I got this off an similar debate on IGN:

On the front of this controller is a brand new sensor which we call the direct pointing device. This powers Revolution to detect precisely which location on the screen the controller is pointing towards. With this technology you can not only point at a location intuitively, Revolution can also detect the distance from the screen and even the angle of the controller.

Saying this while a picture of the red window is shown on the slide. Well there you have it. Confirmation that this is key to the Rev's Revolution, shifting the paradigm between control pad and TV. How it works is anyones guess.

shut up shut up shut up what does it even matter shut up shut up shut up

i swear, you guys seemed determined to run everything into the ground.

I think it would be amusing if they never told us specs.. but just gave us games..

I don't think Nintendo has ever officially released hard tech specs on any of their consoles. Even the N64, for which they were only too happy to talk up technical prowess on, was never officially specced out publicly, and in terms of raw throughput there is even still debate on the matter.

So I guess prepare to be amused.

They did release specs for the Gamecube, though they only said it was capable of a modest 6 million polys per second, whereas microsoft claimed 120 million and sony claimed 66 million.

That's because Nintendo released specs based on in-game performance. Reports before GCNs launch said that Nintendo's in-game number was even quite modest, iirc.

I'm pretty sure Sony and Microsoft have given theoretical, ideal specs again with PS3 and Xbox 360, but I can't be sure.

yeah, I know that Nintendo understated the performance of their machine, my point was just that they did release specs for the Cube. Sure, the techie in me would love to know what is under the Revolution's hood, but I wouldn't mind just letting the games speak for themselves.

edit: also, it would not surprise me if the PS3 and Xbox 360 performance specs are theoretical, either. I think you've got a point there. Sony and Microsoft love numbers.. Nintendo loves numbers too, but primarily the ones in their checkbooks and bank accounts :)

I'm pretty sure the specs for the gamecube, aside from the in-game performance numbers, came primarily from leaks. And oddly enough from MS' infamous comparative chart.

Man...I'm going through something similar to poor Kobun on another message board...they keep calling it a "tilt gimmick" and saying it won't be responsive because of the tilting.

I feel some of your pain, Kobun. I really do. Thanks for all the effort.

Is there some kind of NDA against hearsay or something? heh.
No, but if somebody tells me something in confidence and then I go and WRITE IT ON THE INTERNET wouldn't that, uh, seriously impair their trust in me? Why the hell would I do that?

I'm not harboring any big secrets. But I do expect that more Revolution news will happen between now and E3. If anyone wants to assume that it's some kind of big explosive world-shattering secret and call it SOMETIMEINTHENEXTSEVENMONTHSATON!!!1 then go ahead. But anyone who does is retarded.

You don't have to be a douche about it. I was just asking. For all I know you could have over heard a couple random industry folk talking about some things that they anticipate to happen. That's a little more so what I was getting at. Anyway, If you're gonna get all bitchy when someone asks you a fucking question, then don't come parading in here offering to answer them.. >:|

You seem to be the bitchy one right now... :/

Bloody hell, my head hurts after reading this thread.

Thanks for the info Kobun, really appreciate it. Sounds like MP3 will control like an absolute dream, can't wait.

I think he's answered enough fuckin' questions in this thread already. Some of them many times over.

What are you his spokeswomen? stfu. He doesn't have to answer any more then he wants to. I definately appreciate the info he's given. however, there is no excuse for being a douche bag when someone posts a legitamate question. If the guy doesn't feel like answering anything else, he simply doesn't have to respond. Stop riding his knob.

Well, I'm grateful because of that, his answers were very informative, but I think he should've ignored some posts and questions though since some people weren't informed about the controller that much and stuff so they asked redundant questions.

Got some cheese to go with that whine?

I started trying to read this thread and it turned out worse than the "revolution controller TECH TALK" thread. :(

thanks for trying kobun.

In the plane demo, you made the plane loop-the-loop by pretending the controller is a toy plane and flipping it over in your hands.

I don't know if some of you have come to realize that the Revolution controller IS like a 3D mouse, but if you haven't realized this yet - read what Kobun Heat has to say above.

Tell me how a laser pointer style controller would understand that by flipping the controller over in your hands the plane should loop? Clearly, whether it be gyros or some other tech, and/or combined with other tech, the Revolution controller understands up [up], down [down], left, right,
,
, , [a], [select], [start], back, forward, tilt, and angle. With gyros it would also understand roll. Nintendo has told us that the controller understands how far away you are from the tv, so clearly it can interpolate any action inbetween.

This pointless bickering about the controller tech being literally just a tv remote with a dpad is bollocks. It is MUCH more than that, so stop perceiving reality in the way you are most comfortable with.
