Konami on DS and PSP

In an interview carried out by our fellow-members of ITRGames, Hans-jrgen Kohrs, General manager of Konami France expressed themselves about the plans to come from the editor on the European ground. Concerning the market of the portables, it declares that Konami envisages to launch eight titles on PSP during this year 2005. Here the extract of the interview in question:

The new portable consoles arrive in a few weeks to Europe. What do you think of the two machines?

Konami will be present as well on Nintendo DS as Sony PSP. Our line up 2005 includes/understands in particular six titles for the Nintendo console and eight for that of Sony, including two with launching. It is difficult to today forecast what the players will privilege: the most original machine with Nintendo DS, its functions tactile and its double screen or the most powerful machine. To date, I can just assure you that the developments are much cheaper on Nintendo DS!

According to Jarrod's mega list things stand something like this:

Known DS games: Boktai, Castlevania, Choro Q, Dragon Booster, Frogger: Helmet Havoc, Ganbare Goemon, Jinsei Game DS, Lost In Blue, Powerful Pro Baseball, Prince of Tennis, Shin Megami Tensei, Yu Gi Oh!, Vandal Hearts, WinX, Winning Eleven World Soccer

PSP: Coded Arms, Death Jr, EX Jinsei, Frogger: Helmet Havoc, Mahjong Kakutou, Metal Gear Acid, Persona, Powerful Pro Baseball, Princess Crown, Rengoku: Tower of Pergutory, Touge Max, Winning Eleven World Soccer, Ys: The Art of Napishtam - rumored ZOE.

I'm glad DS isn't getting purely kids games and it's clear PSP has won some great support by default. I'd say Sony have the best Konami support, but I don't wanna play down Castlevania, Goemon, Lost in Blue etc. The Winning Eleven teams might come up with some interesting handheld exclusive features too. Hopefully theres some online games among this lot for both systems. Interesting how he emphasises DS is cheaper to develop for though. Could that be a factor that ensures DS support as / if developers are beginning to get squeezed out next gen?

I don't know, Shin Megami Tensei DS is quite the interesting DS choice. Not to pigeonhole Nintendo, but it's interesting that they did decide to put such an overtly "mature" (and not necessarily in the traditional sense) series on the system instead of PSP. True, PSP has Persona... but I think there's different degrees going on here.

Can't wait to see these products.

Both lineups are pretty great, with the usual crap thrown in too. Wouldn't like to have to choose between them.

I'd definitely choose the DS line-up. Castlevania, Vandal Hearts and Shin Megami Tensei put it over Persona, Metal Gear Ac!d and Ys.

Well I haven't played quite a lot of the series heading to the PSP, so I'm just going on what others think when I say they're close.

I certainly prefer Konami's DS output at this point of time. BTW, Persona for PSP? Any pics and/or info?

They need to finnaly tell what its going to be. Port/Remake or completely new game?

Cause seriously, that shit looks so awesome. Imagine those visuals on the PSP screen? That gameplay!? Oh jesus my nuts...

It gives off a Valkyrie Profile-esque vibe. How does it play exactly?

Well considering SMT1 and SMT2 are on the GBA.... and we have no idea if "SMT DS" is another remake or maybe even Devil Children (you know, the really KIDDY one also on the GBC/GBA/PSX?), I don't see how it's interesting of a choice at all. There's a very clear reason for this.

SMT is traditionally a more role-playing centered series with no voice and tons of customization. Sounds great for DS! Persona is traditionally a very anime style console RPG type series with tons of voice, anime FMVs, vocal songs and appeals to a general audience more. So there you go. :D

Ew, I hope it's not lame like the DemoKid games. I was hoping it'd be more along the lines of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne...

Hey I hope so too, but with portamania everywhere as far as portables are concerned, I'm just going to expect SMT DS to be SMT1+2 remake and Persona PSP to be Persona 2 IS+EP ports until otherwise proven. That way if they're something new I have something to be surprised and impressed about! :lol

This will give you a good overview of it

http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/princesscrown/Princess_Crown.html

If they aren't going to do a completely new Persona for the DS, it'd be nice if they did some sort of compilation fo the previous 3. Atleast that'll finally get Innocent Sin over here.

Wow, that was a horribly written review :P

But now I got a general overview, you were correct. Sounds pretty hot.

Please bring it over... please bring it over...

i really hope they give some details about winning eleven psp soon so i don't have to buy fifa to enjoy some handheld football.

I'm still hoping SMT DS is Devil Summoner. Then follow it up with Soul Hackers. :)

For already announced games from Konami USA...

Nintendo DS
01 Castlevania (KCE Tokyo)
02 Dragon Booster (Konami Digital)
03 Frogger: Helmet Havoc (KCE Hawaii)
04 Lost In Blue (KCE Japan)
05 Yu-Gi-OH!: Nightmare Troubador (KCE Japan)
06 WinX (Konami Digital)

PSP
01 Coded Arms (KCE Studio)
02 Death Jr (Backbone Entertainment)
03 Frogger: Helmet Havoc (KCE Hawaii)
04 Metal Gear Acid (KCE Japan)
05 Rengoku: Tower of Pergutory (Hudson Studio)
05 Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (Konami Digital)

...though Nintendo also confirms 3 more DS games from Konami (Boktai, Vandal-Hearts & WE). I expect Atlus USA will probably bring over most of their own stuff along with choice imports... they already have Cadelcus, Snowboard Kids and Puyo Pop Fever for DS confirmed.

I'm excited about Persona PSP, but not as much as a new ZOE title.

Also, Princess Crown looks hot, but it probably won't make it out over here. Import++

I like DS's lineup. Castlevania and Winning Eleven Soccer seal the deal.

I also look forward to seeing what TMNT games come to the handhelds. The first two were short, but much better than their console brothers.

I know it´s off topic but can you tell me who that cute girl on your avatar is? :)

Kaela Kimura

Is ZOE seriously rumored for the PSP, or did that come from all those lists where people list ZOE as a game they want on the PSP? I haven't seen any serious rumors about it actually happening.

What's WinX?

Also, Winning Eleven is on retail release lists, so that seems pretty definite.

DS gets a Vandal Hearts? Wow there's a name I haven't heard in awhile... loved the first one... too bad the second one had that screwy battle engine, and was mod chip coded, never got a chance to play it(even though I had a GS bypass code that reviews of the battle engine turned me off).

I enjoyed both Demi-Kids games. They weren't phenominal, but there is more to them than people generally admit.

I suspect what is announced will have nothing to do with that series, however, simply from the working titles of the games given thus far. It makes little sense to refer to these games by the main franchise title and then suddenly be like "hey, it's redo of Soul Hackers or Digital Devil Children!" Soul Hackers is not that great that I'd want to see it redone anyway. As for the whole "surprised it's on DS" thing, I don't quite understand it. There are "mature" releases of the series on NES, SNES and GBA already. The DS release is logical.

Either way, Atlus hasn't even bothered with the GBA ports of the PSX remakes here, so who knows if they'll bother with the DS/PSP versions either. I'd certainly hope they would, but you never know.

I actually was on Nintendo's Japanese DS website where they have this little collage video. I think it played within flash. There were some shots of a game that had a visual style awfully similar to that of Persona. I'm not sure if that's the DS game or not, maybe someone else would be able to tell.

I don't know what game this is. It's most likely something else that I don't recognize, but it did strike me as similar.

It says "The Urbz" in the upper left corner.

Man a portable Innocent Sin would be awesome. Can't wait for that stuff to go portable.

Sigh. Well, my hope was way off base lol.

The top really did kind of look like Persona in the tiny video and the bottom map screen kind of thing reminded me of the series in general. Oh well.

lol same here. I was like, "oh crap is that a persona screenshot?" but then I read the corner text and felt silly.
