Konami restructures it's dev studios

From gamefront.de:

Konami Computer Entertainment Studio, Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and Konami Computer Entertainment Japan will be laid together to Konami Online. They want to save money this way and they'll give more importance to online games from now on. Beginning in the second quarter 2005 all 3 studios will be known as Konami.

I'm not sure I care about it.

I'm all for it only if it doesn't affect the quality of the games that KCEJ have brought and will bring. KCEJ are the best thing about Konami.

Ring of Red Online b*tches! Make it happen!

Sure the game would take 200 years to have one match... so? ;)

Er, except for the 5000 crap licensed games they shove out annually on PS2 & GBA.

I'm a little surprised that Konami's restructing and consolidating, yet again. It wasn't all that long ago that the Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka studios were absorbed... now it's just going to be one giant Konami Studio? At least KCE Hawaii, Konami Digital and Konami Software Shanghai are safe, being in different nations. I wouldn't be shocked if Hawaii was shut down too though, and resources diverted to Digital.

So you don't like Winning Eleven, Castlevania, Silent Hill, Suikoden and Contra? KCEJ only has MGS (and maybe ZOE).

I'm hoping we'll see another ZOE game soon, possibly using the updated MGS3 engine, or, god willing, as a PS3 launch game.

I do of course like those titles, but maybe I should have rephrased myself, I think KCEJ is the best about Konami. I didn't say I didn't like any of those titles.

KCEJ also has Yu-Gi-OH! and Boktai for quality stuff. Well, at least the mainline YGO card games are good.

KCET has it's fair share of shovelware too (though not nearly as much as KCEJ or KCES), and outside WE all their big series seem to be in decline. KCES looks pretty sad too, relegated to mainly sports games. At least they're getting back into Goemon though.

ZOE PSP is rumored.

I'd love to see a free roaming ZOE (ie, you're a mercenary in a frame travelling around the system, you can pick up missions for cash or do story missions to upgrade your frame) with some kind of wireless battle option.

:D

Leave online games to people who know how to do them. That's just not Konami's specialty. I'm not saying it couldn't be, but it's just not right now. Besides, if they want to do anything, it might be to spend a couple of bucks here and there on billboards for Metal Gear Solid in the U.S. They pretended Twin Snakes and Snake Eater just didn't exist.

That is the worst idea I've ever heard. Personally, I'd rather Konami not destroy my favorite series.

This all sounds like a bad idea to me, but who knows their motivation or true goals. If they focus entirely on online then I'm going to cry. But as long as ZOE, Castlevania, and Metal Gear get awesome sequels I'll be satisfied by the new Konami.

Of the three ZOE games, two have been crap and the other has been excellent, so i'm not getting my hopes up too far. If nothing else, they should start you off with the zero shift to get around the whole "no mid-range combat" problem.

I would love sprite-based Suikodens for handhelds. There's enough characters that they could make a ton of sidestories.

A new Vandal Hearts could be kind of cool too.

First it was KCEK, then KCEO and now KCET/J...Well...perhaps NOW you'll give a crap about this like I did when it happened to KCEO :(
Don't know what the Konami guys plan but I don't like it.

KCET is my favorite developer and yet this news still doesn't worry me.

I think one of the things has helped Konami to grew so much is the fact that there was rivality between the studios and that they tried to give their best (with the exception of KCEN and KCE America...). With the end of the 32/64 bits it seems just as if Konami wasn't interested in the other filials but only KCET/KCEJ and they began a centralization process...I only see this going further...
Anything to worry about it ? Not really...Not for now. I just said I didn't like the way they are changing the company.

Part of that was probably their platform decisions too. KCET, KCEJ & KCEO were all really strong last gen, with each focusing on one machine (NCET & KCEJ on PS1, KCEO on N64). This generation though, KCEO/KCES went almost exclusively multiplatform, and decided to go almost exclusively sports as well to help support Konami's ESPN initiative. That was probably a bad idea in the long run, as multiplatform R&D spread them thin and Konami's ESPN plan tanked almost immediately. Only now they seem to be getting back on the right track, with new Goemon games even... I just hope all the teams don't lose their indentities in the mass consolidation. KCET & KCEJ were doing pretty well as is and KCES was looking to make a comeback. :/

I wonder if Silicon Knights plan to work with them in the future again... Denis Dyack has been posting at IGN btw. Just made me think of it.
Interesting. Thanks for mention it. I whished he could hang here instead though.

I think they're still going to have the same teams as before, just that they're not going to be in different buildings, with different management.
