Featuring steven chow chow.

I saw this on the weekend through perfectly legal means ... cough cough, and it's awesome so if you get a chance go see it upon its domestic release in north america. Has anyone else seen it ?

Finally sat down and watched Hustle this morning. Came away with mixed thoughts... in some ways this movie seemed much more over the top that his previous outings.... lots of visual cues to other movies, various cues to things from the Matrix movies, including some audio cues, of courses references to Shaolin Soccer(glad to see some of those familiar faces), and a reference to the Shining that had me lol.... The musical assassins immediately reminded me of Brigette Lin's Deadful Melody, and while The CG still doesn't look quite right... human bodies still look too rubbery and move to rag-doll-ish, but you pretty much expect/accept that at this point. The gangster the shotgun the girl(opening sequence)... too funny, and then the reference to it later accept for a cigarette? Funny.

I personally found the movie hilarious and without even looking it up I recognize the fight choreography work of Yuen Woo-Ping whose pulled alot of stuff from his time on the matrix movies in to these fight sequences.

While the story was only average, I really got a kick out of the many fight sequences... and come on who didn't laugh at the martial arts master with the red underwear...

Average story, great chow, great fight sequences. A bit more over the top than I expected in some spots... but a great movie... and come on...The Beast... wearing flip flops? :lol :lol :lol :lol

*I* still prefer Shaolin Soccer to this movie.... but this is definitely one where if nothing else I'll pop in the DVD in the future to show off some of the fight sequences to other folks.

Speaking of Brigette Lin you know I was watching Police Story last night... wow talking about looking incredibly blah... she looks mannish in that movie... she looks great in other stuff though... Deadful.. Swordsman II, White Hair I & II, etc....

Yeah. I have mixed feelings for it too. Overall a fun film but it took a while to warm up. The fight scenes are some of the most outlandish and entertaining I've yet seen however.

The fight between the Beast and The One is just great. And the giant palm-shaped hole in the building - stupidly brilliant. I just love how the film isn't scared to be completely stupid. I reckon those annoying blind musician guys will be copied/homaged in a game at some point soon.

A friend saw this at Sundance and said it was the best movie there, and he saw lots of the big players.

I'm really into the goofiness of this one. It reminds me a bit of God of Cookery. I'm jazzed to see it.

Kung Fu Hustle was okay at the best of times... never laugh-out-loud funny, but it wasn't his best work. I think the only thing I laughed at is when the Beast is about to gloat about how he can catch bullets between his fingers,
only to be stopped short of completing his sentence when Stephen stomps his foot flat. His scream was priceless.
.

If you read a lot of Chinese literature, comic books and TV shows from the 80s, you'll pick up on a lot of the classic references that, frankly, I think is going to go over the heads of most Western viewers.

Take the
clearing of his Chi
, for instance. It's one of the oldest devices in Chinese storytelling so it doesn't really need explaining for Chinese audiences. But for Western audiences, and even some of the younger Chinese folk, it needs a little explaining and it happens far too quickly and conveniently in the film for it to be taken seriously. It looks more like spoof than actual story development.

Too much CG as well. When the
three warriors reveal themselves
, the copious amounts of smoke looked too fake for my liking.

Yeah, I doubt anything is ever going to touch God of Cokkery.

And am I the only one who thinks Shoalin Soccer was way overrated?

I'm actually the reverse of you SS is my favorite of his and while I like GoC I think it's highly overrated, but fun.

i kinda missed some good character development but it was still pretty good, somehow liked it better the second time i watched it (could be that i was just tired the first time).
Still with his talent i would like to see him try a more serious move next time.

Heh, you don't know Stephen Chow do you... that's probably not going to happen.

lil note: Wo Ping didnt choreograph much of the Matrix Sequels. Dion lam handled the bulk of it. Wo Ping left.

Saw it. Loved it. Probably wouldn't watch it again though.

Am I the only one who likes this better than Shaolin Soccer?

Plus, any recomendations on similar movies?
