Lactose Intolerance

Is it possible to suddenly become lactose intolerant in your early 20s, after never having shown any such symptoms before in your life? It seems that lately, any time I drink any significant amount of milk, or eat cheese (I like a lot of cheese on top of spaghetti or any other pasta), I have a bit of....let's just say digestive distress. It's nothing really that disastrous, and can usually wait at least an hour or two before I need to use the restroom, but it's still noticeable. What are the normal symptoms of full-blown lactose intolerance?

It ranges a lot, but I have a reaction similar to yours. My reccomendation would be to go get some lactaid at a drugstore or grocery store. Take that with you first bite of food, and it helps CONGRATULATIONS! You're lactose intolerant.

Dammit, this sucks. One of the things I always make sure to have stocked is big bags of shredded mozzarela cheese too, if that says anything about how much I like dairy products.

Darthwoo- Yes it is very possible to become Lactose Intolerant as you age. What you have to realize is that originally the human diet NEVER contained any lactose or dairy type products. The only time you received lactose was from breast milk. So infants and young children were able to digest it, but when the child would come of age it would lose the ability to do this. What happened though was people started to domesticate animals and specifically european peoples became increasingly dependant on dairy products. What happened was a survival advantage for people who could retain the ability to process lactose and dairy product. So there you have it. I don't know how old you are Darthwoo, but many people become lactose intolerant around or just after puberty.

As long as it's fat free (or extremely low in fat), I can handle dairy just fine. You may want to try that approach and see if it works out for you.

I've noticed this too and I'm 22. People generally become more sensitive to lactose the older they get. Sucks because I can't eat ice cream as much anymore :(

Yea, my early 20's is when I became lactose intolerant.

SUcks ass considering how much I absolutely love all milk products.

But the lactaid milk (as expensive as it is) is actually delicious as hell, I can't take those lactaid tablets, they give me migraines for some odd reason.

I became lactose intolerant around the age of 17 I reckon. I've been allergic (probably only in my mind though) ever since I can remember, I never ate the shit as a kid either.

But around the age of 17 everything with even the slightest touch of diary products makes my ass sound like start of the yearly hells angels get-together. I was never too keen on milk and such so it's not that big of a deal. It's the cream in pasta dishes that really pisses me off, but I'm usually more than willing to sacrifice 3 days of shitting my brains out for 1 good meal :)

Perhaps I'll try to rebuild my tolerance, much like drinking poison will make you resistant to it over time if it doesn't kill you.

If I drink excessive amounts of milk (like more than two glasses), then the intolerance begins to kick in with the typical symptoms, most prevalent in gas. I hardly ever drink more than a cup at a time, so it's not a problem most of the time.

I love milk too much to give it up, though.

I used to drink a ton of milk, then I turned 17 and drinking 1 full glass would give me some awful gas and the runs. Now I drink Lactaid. It's pretty good but it's thick. On the plus side, Lactaid milk lasts for two months instead of expiring quickly like regular milk.

Ah screw it! I shall fight it, and it shall make me stronger, somehow...assuming I don't end up not being able to run to a bathroom at a critical time.

DarthWoo, the same happened to me. Around 22-23 I noticed I would have the most foul smelling gas when I drank milk (and that's something when you can't stand your own). Now I use it to torture my wife.

I know someone who is lactose intolerant. Its not the end of the world. :)

Milk is not a problem as you can get all sorts of types! Cheese is fine too but your selection is limited to basic cheese i think. You cant have mainstream milk chocolates however. Unless you dont mind a foul fart privately.

Lactose intolerance sucks. It's gotten to the part where I can time when the shit's gonna hit.

AFAIK, you can't rebuild a tolerance to lactose like poison; it's more like late-onset diabetes. The different enzymes that respond to the sugars (glucose/lactose) just don't respond. In the case of diabetes, you just piss it off (there's other problems too, obviously) and in the case of lactose, the bacteria in your large intestine go to work on it creating methane, and making the large intestine more acidic meaning water diffuses in their, thus giving you shits.

My problem began in high school, and i had no idea what was happening to me. I skipped a lot of classes in college because i would feel like crap after breakfast. Mine got so bad that i would have severe cramps and about 2 minute notice to find a bathroom... so i shied away from going out anywhere just in case.

once i figured out that it was dairy the damage was already done. I'm still uncomfortable going out unless i know exactly where the bathroom is... i get anxiety attacks because of it.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I have it, somewhat... But it's mild compared to most people that have it. You say the word 'dairy' to some people and they just sh!t on themself. Not me. I like cereal, but know that when I wake up (I eat it late at night), I'm going to be either a) In pain b) Late for work due to level 3 ass wipe-age or c) Fine if I drink a sh!t load of water before I go to sleep.

The worst part is the gas, especially when you have someone in the bed with you.

Ther only thing that gives me trouble is ice cream, and I'm not sure if it has to do with the milk in it. I don't eat that much ice cream anyway.

IAWTP. I, too, use it as an offensive weapon (no pun intended).

Ah yeah, my sis cooked for me once and used loads of Pesto and cream, she kinda forgot that Pesto has a pretty large amount of Parmesan cheese in it. I was out for 2 days.

I would pass gas and I would immediatly feel my belly filling up with more gas, no matter how much or how hard I farted. Reminded me of of bubbles you see when you go scuba-diving, only then in my body

Wow, such a relatively uncontroversial topic and it's already surpassed all by my three most successful threads. I was thinking about this due to the presence of that other thread about successful threads.

I have mild intolerance. Drinking heavy amounts at any one time (of straight milk or chocolate) kicks my butt a bit. I take cheese and ice cream fine though. Didn't have this problem through high school though.

Yes it is we were actually talking to the hospital pediatrician yesterday about this very topic because we were concerned whether our daughter would be lactose intolerant. I was never lactose intolerant til my mid/late 20's... now I have to be careful, and when the doctor asked us about it yesterday and I explained my circumstance she said yup, that's not uncommon.
