Lahaina, maui HI wiped off the map by wildfires

Surprised there hasnt been a thread on this yet. Massive fires spread by hurricane winds scorched the entire area in hawaii burning most of it to the ground. Major destruction. This was a high tourist area for the island.

So far 36 fatalities.

Its an active situation and fire fighters are currently trying to contain it.

Good luck HawaiiGAF.

Absolutely wild, I'm really curious what will even be left once it's all said and done.

Maui is such a beautiful location, hopefully the death total starts as low as possible.

Amazing part of the world. This is so sad. I was there at my aunts place when I was 12 and it was literally paradise. Macadamia nuts are going to surge in price

That's fucking terrible. The loss of life.

That's the tourist hangout on Maui. And tourism is obviously pretty important there.

Much love, Mauigaf. You will rebuild. I have no doubt.

I heard people had to straight up jump in the ocean to avoid some of the blazes, and the cinders were catching boats on fire

Days like these...

Wouldn't you want the death toll to end as low as possible? It always starts as low as possible with 1

Cool, my phone made "stays" into "starts" again.

That's what I get for making posts using swipe for typing.

To add something else, I just saw some updated videos of the aftermath. Lahaina is completely gone now, what a tragedy.

Makes me sad that the land will now probably get bought up by a few super wealthy individuals, and there'll be even more consolidation of assets.

That's really tragic. I was just there a few months ago. Sounds like the Banyan Tree and the old courthouse were lost.

As someone who moved to Maui at 8 and spent 25 years on island (now in PA), but who calls it home, this has been a day of tears.

This is a tremendous loss for Maui, Hawaii, and the people. Lahaina was originally the Capital of the islands, a whaling town, and the feeling of history in it was tangible. A beautiful place with beautiful people. It’s hard to even comprehend it’s gone, and I can’t bear to watch footage and see pictures of its decimation. I’m just thankful for the memories I have of Front St. Hopefully the old banyan will hold on.

Fuck! What a shitty day.

At least 36 killed in Maui County wildfires

From CNN's Jamiel Lynch
The death toll in Maui County is now 36, according to a press release from the county.
“As the firefighting efforts continue, 36 total fatalities have been discovered today amid the active Lahaina fire. No other details are available at this time,” the release said.

God damn. RIP

I hope Leoda's is all right. Lahaina is a beautiful town too. :(

Devastating. RIP to the victims.
Saw some videos of people escaping by car from there circulating on social media yesterday and it literally looks like they are driving through hell.

My province just had its largest ever recorded wildfires this year, not normal at all for us. Crazy times in the world. Hoping it gets better for them fast.

I know there’s volcanoes but wildfires is crazy, 100% want to see them recover.
Wildfires are actually fairly common, especially since the cessation of HC & S that turned the cane fields into tinderboxes by allowing weeds and non native grasses to flourish.

One or two buildings here and there happens from time to time, but the destruction of an entire town and such loss of life is unheard of. Especially a place such as Lahaina, which is a massive historical and cultural loss. This is one of the worst disasters to befall the islands in a long time, if not ever.

Pretty bummed I never got to visit Hawaii before this happened. Like I completely missed the boat on an entire reality that is lost to the ages.

Has the cause been confirmed? Draught conditions? Volcano? Arson? A quick google search doesn't seem to show anything, just speculative articles.

Cause not confirmed yet but very dry conditions in this part of the island, invasive grasses which get very dry, and there was a hurricane several miles south so crazy winds. I woudl guess that a power line blew down but just a guess.

There’s an asshole actor named Jason Mamoa who is telling people five words:
“Do Not Go To Maui”

Fuck him

I’m here now. Booked it ten months ago. And EVERY SINGLE RESTAURANT AND STORE has been thanking us for coming! The locals are really pissed that Jason Mamoa and the mainstream media are telling people to cancel their flights here!

Yes, Lahaina was destroyed. Over 1000 people are still missing and will most likely be added to the 100 confirmed dead.

But the rest of the island businesses need tourism. Every restaurant and every local store in allllll the other towns (Kihei, Paia etc) are functioning at 25% to 35% their normal capacity because Jason Mamoa and the news is telling people not to come to Maui!!!

But life goes on for the rest of Maui, and the people here need to make money!! All these restaurant workers are having their hours cut from 40 hours a week to 16 hours a week! I know this because they’re telling me!!

The truth is, you can’t come to Lahaina (Because its gone!! And it sucks!!!)
But the rest of the island needs tourists. Their economy is struggling

If we were infringing on their resources, they would have stopped all travel/all flights. But they’re not because they need tourists, despite what the dipshits are saying on your TV.

Just saw it earlier on the news. Terrifying. I Hope they catch the bastard(s) that ignited this fire.
Apparently it might have been a downed powerline

The news here is saying it was a perfect storm of shitty things that happened

First the strong winds from the off shore hurricane knocked down a power line. That was the IGNITION that sparked up the super dry, drought ridden area.

Then the same crazy winds spread the fire in minutes and hours.

Add to that, the Lahaina power company NEVER turned off the electric, during the fire… which sparked and spread even MORE igniting factors

Then, finally, the Maui officials never activated the sirens!! So nobody got an advanced alert!!! Nor a present tense alert!! (Those are the sirens that always alert the townspeople when there’s a storm or tsunami)

There’s going to be massive lawsuits against the power company here, that’s for sure

I am going with Power line creating a brush fire. Every time I check twitter though I see people claiming space laser targeting poor people so the stat and Orpah can buy the land.

In awe of how the US is handling this.

100 people dead. People's entire lives were destroyed, everything they owned reduced to ashes. And what help do they get? A president who is on vacation, "no comments" the press for days and then announces a generous 700 bucks per household, while at the same time asking for another 30 billion for Ukraine.

Unreal. If there ever was a time to riot in the streets, this would be a good one.

Another factor: Hawaiian Electric were aware for a number of years that damaged powerlines could create sparks and set dry grass and shrubs alight, but they spent only $245,000 on wildfire-specific projects in the past four years. This has the making of a negligence lawsuit that could put Hawaiian Electric out of business.

Yes we are governed by a detached bureaucratic aristocracy. Term Limits need to happen.

And when new people come in there care more about power and staying in power than they do about the people they govern.

I saw this on the news, but also, and oh boy, people on Facebook were talking as if this was another part of the "great reset".

My wife and I were in Maui many years ago for our honeymoon. Very amazing place. Very expensive. Turns out the beautiful hotel we stayed at was torn down. If we ever go back, we will not recognize it. Considering how expensive it now is, we probably could never afford it. No doubt we stopped by Lahaina as part of our trip. I hope they are able to rebuild and bring it back as much as possible to what it once was.
