more. everyone who would have gone to maui will go pack the other neighboring islands
Just got a bag of regular Doritos for $8.00 here.
The normal size bag. The one that’s $4.39 in New York suburbsThe Normal sized bag or the big bag? I heard it was expensive.
In awe of how the US is handling this.
100 people dead. People's entire lives were destroyed, everything they owned reduced to ashes. And what help do they get? A president who is on vacation, "no comments" the press for days and then announces a generous 700 bucks per household, while at the same time asking for another 30 billion for Ukraine.
Unreal. If there ever was a time to riot in the streets, this would be a good one.

Not the party size
Everything I read about these wildfires is completely ridiculous. Barricades, no warning alarm, the power lines, water issues....At what point do you say it's by design instead of negligence?Another factor: Hawaiian Electric were aware for a number of years that damaged powerlines could create sparks and set dry grass and shrubs alight, but they spent only $245,000 on wildfire-specific projects in the past four years. This has the making of a negligence lawsuit that could put Hawaiian Electric out of business.
Hawaiian Electric Knew of Wildfire Threat, but Waited Years to Act
Four years ago, the utility said it needed to do more to prevent its power lines from emitting sparks. It made little progress, focusing on a shift to clean energy.www.wsj.com

In deadly Maui fires, many had no warning and no way out. Those who dodged a barricade survived

I'm remembering when Katrina unfolded and there was this whole crazy loud drumbeat narrative about the president and FEMA, but this time it seems incredibly quiet even in the face of incredible incompetence. There is just this attitude of incompetence that simply gets hand waved and no one seems to be held accountable (unless you're "that" guy). it's wild. It likely is due to this massive shift to equity over meritocracy.
The lunatics online talking about direct energy weapons and conspiracies has made the news around this such a chore to follow on social media. Twitter especially.
It’s really really really dry there. You can literally see a physical LINE in terms of where the lush green starts and the lush green ends, right where things are irrigated. Which is odd because it’s an island surrounded by water. But I was there and even saw it in the areas not on the North West coast.
farms aren't going to be using saltwater when the crops can't tolerate it
There's bound to be a conspiracy for every major event, usually starts by calling it fake. I think having a degree of skepticism is healthy, but some take it too farThe lunatics online talking about direct energy weapons and conspiracies has made the news around this such a chore to follow on social media. Now that I’m back from Maui and also back at work in NY, I just an hour ago heard that the fires in Maui were “started by lasers” and that some of the burned animals were “solidified” in their “charred state”There's bound to be a conspiracy for every major event, usually starts by calling it fake. I've kind of seen it as a joke here or there, but you must be around some people faaar in those rabbit holesNow that I’m back from Maui and also back at work in NY, I just an hour ago heard that the fires in Maui were “started by lasers” and that some of the burned animals were “solidified” in their “charred state”
The Wikipedia for the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 still lists ~2,500 people as missing. Not everything is some conspiracyI find it hard to believe there could be so many "missing" at this point. I realize that they haven't cleared every building, but surely "folks killed in their cars" and whatnot would have been found and identified (as a body, if not a specific individual yet). I feel like this is being aggressively downplayed for some reason.
This report says only ~400 are still unaccounted for https://www.civilbeat.org/2023/08/m...ic’s help in identifying anyone still missing. so that other article saying its 1100 is out of date. So there you go, it was hard to believe so many were considered missing because in fact that many are NOT still considered missing. The Wikipedia for the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 still lists ~2,500 people as missing.
