Lahaina, maui HI wiped off the map by wildfires

In awe of how the US is handling this.

100 people dead. People's entire lives were destroyed, everything they owned reduced to ashes. And what help do they get? A president who is on vacation, "no comments" the press for days and then announces a generous 700 bucks per household, while at the same time asking for another 30 billion for Ukraine.

Unreal. If there ever was a time to riot in the streets, this would be a good one.

This is the problem of running a continent sized country, things that happen thousands of miles away are out of sight out of mind, to many.

It's why mass shootings only have limited impact on the American physce. They just don't think that something like that will ever affect them in their little corner of the country.

Politicians in geographically small countries like the UK would never get away with it.

The normal size bag. The one that’s $4.39 in New York suburbs

Not the party size

That's fucking insane.... I would consider growing my own, at that point, and... I am actually thinking of producing my own food, but it's gonna be tough. Also, water collection, and such.. ugh... I have a feeling things are only going to get more difficult/complex. I can only try my best.

There is (or at least used to be) a subsidy system on many goings for residents, the Kamaiima card, so those food prices are mostly just for tourists.

IMHO the real reason this isn't getting more attention is that Hawaii isn't a swing state.

Imagine if St Augustine, Florida or Vale, Colorado burned with 1000 folks missing.

Another factor: Hawaiian Electric were aware for a number of years that damaged powerlines could create sparks and set dry grass and shrubs alight, but they spent only $245,000 on wildfire-specific projects in the past four years. This has the making of a negligence lawsuit that could put Hawaiian Electric out of business.

Everything I read about these wildfires is completely ridiculous. Barricades, no warning alarm, the power lines, water issues....At what point do you say it's by design instead of negligence?

There is just this attitude of incompetence that simply gets hand waved and no one seems to be held accountable (unless you're "that" guy). it's wild. It likely is due to this massive shift to equity over meritocracy.

I'm remembering when Katrina unfolded and there was this whole crazy loud drumbeat narrative about the president and FEMA, but this time it seems incredibly quiet even in the face of incredible incompetence.
Makes me even more worried about this country.

It’s really really really dry there. You can literally see a physical LINE in terms of where the lush green starts and the lush green ends, right where things are irrigated. Which is odd because it’s an island surrounded by water. But I was there and even saw it in the areas not on the North West coast.

“Aww, it’s so...average,” she said to him in a cold brick of passion
The lunatics online talking about direct energy weapons and conspiracies has made the news around this such a chore to follow on social media. Twitter especially.

farms aren't going to be using saltwater when the crops can't tolerate it

There's bound to be a conspiracy for every major event, usually starts by calling it fake. I think having a degree of skepticism is healthy, but some take it too far

Now that I’m back from Maui and also back at work in NY, I just an hour ago heard that the fires in Maui were “started by lasers” and that some of the burned animals were “solidified” in their “charred state”

I find it hard to believe there could be so many "missing" at this point. I realize that they haven't cleared every building, but surely "folks killed in their cars" and whatnot would have been found and identified (as a body, if not a specific individual yet). I feel like this is being aggressively downplayed for some reason.

The Wikipedia for the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 still lists ~2,500 people as missing. Not everything is some conspiracy
