Lance Reddick already recast for Horizon

…starting with Lego Horizon Adventures

While one option would've been to write Sylens out of the story in future games, it seems Guerrilla has opted to recast him instead. Speaking to IGN in relation to LEGO Horizon Adventures, senior world artist Lucas Bolt explains.

Lance Reddick tragically passed away in 2023, and he is deeply missed within Guerrilla and our community," says Bolt. "He wonderfully portrayed the essential character of Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. The character of Sylens does appear in LEGO Horizon Adventures, and we will introduce the new actor at a later date."

There's a possibility the new voice could be that of Keith David, who stepped into the role of Destiny's Commander Zavala following Reddick's passing. Whoever it may be, we'll find out soon, as LEGO Horizon Adventures is due to release in less than a month on 14th November.

So what do you guys think? I personally think they should’ve found a way to write him out and move on. Respect the character and actor. Let sleeping dogs lie. Even just a line from Aloy like “Sylens has disappeared so now…etc etc” I think would’ve sufficed, at least for me. He’s such a tease in FE anyway and from what I recall (and please correct me if I’m wrong) nowhere to be found in the DLC.

I’ll accept all responses in short essay form. Be thankful there’s no poll. This is my best Lakeof9 impression.

It's fine. Roles are recast for multiple reasons. This dumb shit about it being disrespectful to recast a role when somebody dies feels like it started with Boseman's death. No actor owns a role, nor would they want to. I very much doubt Lance would give a shit, so I don't know why anyone else would.

given that he is the second most important character in the franchise, and the smartest one as well... you cannot just "write him out".
Agreed. And given that, I'll take recasting over any kind of AI shenanigans any day.

It's not a nice thing to do, but as long as the devs publicize the move, commemorate lance as well, then there's nothing wrong with it.

But will they atler the model likeness?

EDIT: in the main games, not the Lego one of course.

His role in the series is too central to write him off. A recast or the use or AI is the way to go.

Such a talented actor, what a shame that he died so young. Rest in peace man

As for the recast, it makes sense, its going to be jarring tho, unless they use the same model and the voice actor tries his best to sound like him, lets see

Imagine thinking a videogame character has to end because one actor dies.

He was phenomenal but not irreplaceable.

If a main actor dies, should that IP end as well?

More interesting question is if they'll leave the appearance of Lance Reddick and change only voice and mocap, or will they change the face? In movies you were forced to change the actor as a whole (nowadays we can have old appearance of an actor thanks to CGI and AI) but in games you don't need that (like Kratos). Then again, you have an actor who's face was scanned and you have the data to maintain his model in virtual world. The question is, do you want to do that? Are you legally able to do that (probably need family approval)?

Anyways I'm glad that they didn't removed him from the plot. In movies they tend to change plans more or less because of that (like in last Matrix, Expanse, Star Wars, etc.).

All kidding aside,

I don't agree. An actor is not the character they play. You don't rewrite fiction because of real life tragedies.
