Hey gaf, looking into buying a new laptop sometime in the near future.

Got my eye on two laptops that'd fit my budget at the moment and I was wondering if anyone here could help.

Pretty much at this point I think it's a toss-up between getting an ASUS or a Compaq, so here are the specs I can find for these models on the net.

The ASUS. Price $1,049 AUD (~$850 US)

* PROCESSOR : Intel® Pentium Dual Core
* PROCESSOR(CPU) :T3400 (2.16GHz , 667MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache)
* OPERATING SYSTEM: Genuine Windows®Vista Home Premium
* MEMORY:2GB DDR2 800
* DISPLAY: 14.1inch HD LED Display, 1280x800
* GRAPHICS:Intel® GMA X4500HD with upto 384MB shared VRAM
* HARD DRIVE:250GB HDD 5400rpm
* OPTICAL DRIVE: DVD-SuperMulti Drive
* NETWORKING: 802.11b/g/n 10/100/1000 LAN
* WEBCAM: 1.3 Megapixls
* INTERFACE:
* 1 x Express card
* 1 x Line-in Jack
* 1 x Microphone-in jack
* 1 x Headphone-out jack
* 1 x VGA port/Mini D-sub 15-pin for external monitor
* 3 x USB 2.0 ports
* 1 x RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert
* POWER: 90W Adapter, 6cell Li-Ion 4800mAh
* SECURITY:Kensington Lock Support
* DIMENSIONS:340 x 238 x 30~34 mm
* WEIGHT: From 2.39KG

The Compaq. Price $894 AUD (~725 US)

COMPAQ - CQ40-515AU 14" NOTEBOOK
AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core QL-65 2.1 GHz
4GB RAM
320GB HDD
Super Multi DVDR/RW DL
Wireless 802.11 B/G
Webcam
Vista Premium

Don't know as much about the Compaq obviously, but I was wondering if there really a big difference between AMD or Intel, and how much ram would be good for vista as I will be switching from XP and haven't used it before. Any input would be great. Cheers.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I wouldn't spend that much on either brand to be honest.

What are you going to be using this laptop for?

HDMI & VGA out, Audio in/out

Wireless G, built in webcam, Bluetooth, SD/Memory Stick slot, ESATA port, 2 USB, Ethernet, Expresscard port

Well I don't intend to be using it for anything like gaming as I already have a desktop that fills that role. It's really more of a computer I'd take with me for work. Guess I'll keep having a look around. Thanks.
