Surface Pro 3 is really a great all around system if you can get one cheap (and they will get cheaper soon I assume when 4 comes out).

I have a Yoga 2 Pro ($900) I bought a while back and that thing has shocked me with how well it works, still to this day. One of teh best laptops I have owned and I never thought I would say that about something called "Yoga".

Although the battery life SUCKS compared to a Macbook Air (I get maybe 5-6 hours out of it, sometimes as much as 8...but MBA gets like 12+) but I am always near a charger so not an issue.

EDIt : My Work is offering me a SP3 to replace my old beast of a laptop, but I am waiting for a SP4 ;P

Its definitely out of OP's budget by little. But I would also recommend this with type cover. Unless you will be heavy on typing and will be typing shit ton of things. That type cover will get the job done.

And if you can wait, wait JUST couple of weeks for price drop, because Surface Pro 4 is around the corner. I am expecting a good discount on Pro 3. By end of this month.

Can also get it used. I'm pretty sure you can find some with the type cover for $500-600~ish.

Another option is an older Thinkpad. I'm thinking x230. So about $250-400 for the laptop. Pick up an SSD if it doesn't already come with one and more RAM if you like with the left over money. With a 9 cell and a slice battery, I think it can last for more than 14 hours? You can otherwise pick up the variant x230t, which has a Wacom digitizer for notes and such.

You might also give serious consideration to a Chromebook. It fulfills all your needs except the gaming, but with the money you would save, you could buy another console.

There is also that $150 Asus Windows laptop. I bought two for work and have been really impressed by them.

I'm getting this later this month. Fits everything except not backlit keyboard. No touchscreen either, but it seems godlike for the specs and price ($750 w/ matte FHD, i5, Intel 5500, 13.3in, 256gb ssd, 8gb ram, aluminum body, great battery life)
