I got rid of my last.fm (twice!) because I was hopelessly addicted to trying to get my favorite artists in the top 25, when it was littered with shit like Animal Collective. :(

a lot of my favorite artists aren't even on my last.fm chart. i don't even really care if people know a particular band is my favorite or not. i only wish last.fm would have a seperate chart for the amount of hours you've spent listening to each artist. joanna newsom, acid mothers temple and anyone else with insanely long tracks would be a hell of a lot higher on my list to just name a few.

Not really ashamed. If she didn't listen to them so much they'd most likely still be in my teens. Are you saying my list has shitty britpop though? I'm confused. There's Pulp, the greatest britpop band ever and then that's about it.

I cannot understand how some of you can listen to the same track over a hundred times. Just looking at my IPOD, 30 is pretty much the limit for me before I get totally sick of a song no matter how much I initially enjoyed it.

Well for me, it's been over a year and a half since I got last.fm. 20 months is probably about 90 weeks or so.. I can listen to my favorite tunes 1-2 times a week, no problem.

Wait, you have recordings of Claude Debussy? What do they sound like?

Truls Mørk is one of my favorite cellists. You should check out the new work and arrangements Aaron Jay Kernis wrote for him, it's really quality material.

Most of my classical listening is done by streaming radio. Classical works tend not to lend well to shuffle play.

The Debussy-ones are just records that have wrong info... actually, most classical albums have wrong info when put into iTunes, so I have to spend tons of time renaming things (just spent an hour correcting the info on a double-album with 150 different tunes...).

I do have recordings made by Debussy himself, though, from 1904. "Ariettes oubliées no. 1, 3 and 5", with him on piano and Mary Garden as a soprano. The sound-quality is horrible, of course, but it's fun to listen to. They're bonus-tracks on an EMI Classics "Great Recordings of the Century"-box of "Pelléas et Mélisande".

And yes, I also have the Kernis-music played by Truls Mørk :) "Colored Field", "Musica Celestis" and "Air". A real treat! The cello is such a wonderful instrument, especially in the hands of someone like Mørk or Du Pré.

Hey I just joined last.fm. Do the audioscrobbler plugins work at all? I don't want to download the program, just the Winamp thingy (which I did, but I'm not sure if it's working...).

EDIT: Nice it works, wish I got this a long time ago!

The Debussy-ones are just records that have wrong info... actually, most classical albums have wrong info when put into iTunes, so I have to spend tons of time renaming things (just spent an hour correcting the info on a double-album with 150 different tunes...).
Another reason I hate ripping my classical CDs... each disc is ten minutes of data entry work at the bare minimum. I wish the audio CD info repositories would agree on a standard naming convention.
Very cool.

I like those reissues, even if the cover art template is really crap -- loads of fascinating recordings with famous and infamous people. There are two really cool recordings I particularly like: Elgar conducts his violin concerto and the Enigma variations, and Sir Adrian Boult (one of his pupils) conducts Enigma variations and Holst's Planets. Which is good stuff, dammit.

Pick up the dirt-cheap catalog/sampler sometime, if you don't own it, and marvel at how many world-renowned (young) performers died after making 2-5 recordings. It's rather sad.

And yes, I also have the Kernis-music played by Truls Mørk :) "Colored Field", "Musica Celestis" and "Air". A real treat! The cello is such a wonderful instrument, especially in the hands of someone like Mørk or Du Pré.
Agreed :) It's my favorite solo instrument, and the one I wish most I'd learned.

Neat, your weekly charts now have a listing showing if the artist is up or down from your last chart (or new to it). Looks like the image version doesn't work, but on the page it does.

1 ▲3 The Rifles 56
2 ▲37 Arctic Monkeys 34
3 Tears for Fears 25
4 Blur 23
4 ▲1 The Beatles 23
6 ▼3 Oasis 21
7 ▼2 Coldplay 19
8 ▲16 Little Man Tate 15
9 ▲30 Editors 14
10 ▲4 The Fratellis 13
10 – The Holloways 13

Not really ashamed. If she didn't listen to them so much they'd most likely still be in my teens. Are you saying my list has shitty britpop though? I'm confused. There's Pulp, the greatest britpop band ever and then that's about it.

No, I wasn't referring to you. Pulp is class, though.

Coltrane.
Oh Yeah. Dig it.
Where's the beef?
Hit me with your last shot,
Baby.

Great choice! That track is from One Up, One down - Life at the Half Note, which I think is the best Coltrane record in existence. His talent was really peaking at that time. Best Coltrane solo ever is the one in the track 'One Up, One down'. A-ma-zing.

Much of Coltrane's earlier stuff is somewhat conventional and tame, while much of his latter stuff is the opposite: very out there, but somehow too academic. On the One Up, One Down records, he really finds a sweet spot in between. (I'm not against free jazz in general, but somehow Coltrane's free stuff doesn't jive so much with me.)
