Last Samurai Standing (Netflix samurai battle royale movie)

Hang on, is this a period piece from the Tokugawa period or something? What would 100 BILLION yen be worth back then? Thats like....(consults google) 650 MILLION $$$ today, which would be an incalculable sum in the 1700s or whatever. For example, 1850s japan has 32 million people and their per capita GDP as $800 (1990s dollars) per person, so roughtly 25 billion total. Thus this prize is like 2% of the entire GDP of japan. Thats like a half a TRILLION dollar prize today.....hmm, sign me up!! :P

Seems like a fun concept.

Apparently it's based on a manga. Anyone read that? Or watched anything with Junichi Okada who is the lead, producer and fight choreographer? Apparently he's a BJJ black belt so I'm curious if the fight scenes will include grappling.

Tenryuji sounded kinda familiar, so I checked. it's the temple right near the popular bamboo forest in Arashiyama, just west of Kyoto. the landscape near there would be pretty diverse including mountain terrain, flat ground, river and forest. that would definitely make for some interesting backdrops for a samurai battle royale.

Trailer bump!

Along with description:

In the late 19th century during the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsty warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival.

"You fools who live without meaning: kill each other, until just one remains."

Looks like it's a 6 episode limited series instead of a movie.
