Lastpass now free across all devices

Well yeah, in terms of UI KeePass doesn't compare to the two big managers, but it is an overall safer method of storing passwords.

I would say KeePass is safer if you're manually synching your databases offline through your local computer. If you ever start using those automatic synch plugins, or you start manually synching online through Google Drive or something, then you start exposing yourself to the same risks as synching through LastPass. In that case, it's arguable that you'd be better served using LastPass, since they have better monitoring.

But yes, an offline database manager is still the safest, though less convenient.

The OP should be updated to mention that they'll be now serving ads to users of the free version. Not sure if this will affect desktop users or just mobile users but it needs to be highlighted.

I'm not at all comfortable with having ads on my password manager... Ads are too easily and too often compromised.

This right here.

I add the vast majority of my passwords in Chrome by clicking the button in the field or via the context menu when the button isn't there. On Android it pops up available logins over the app I'm signing into. I probably spend at most 3 minutes in the app and on lastpass.com a year so I'm curious as to how many ads I'll actually see when my premium runs out in a few months.

Just renewed premium for Lastpass and Xmarks recently. I'll probably just keep it for the ad blocking. Both services have been stellar, so I don't have a problem paying.

This is very nice. I've only used LP on my phone to check a password here and there, and the mobile site has been decent enough for that, so I haven't felt like it's worth paying for me. This will make that experience better.

Getting "60 trial days remaining" in the app though.

People often say this, but then you find out that they're syncing their KeePass database through Dropbox or something. As if that's more secure than letting LastPass do it on their servers, lol.

With a strong master password both solutions are very secure.

Yes. As a year subs. That bundle was (IMO) horrible enough for a lot of software that was redundant (multi-monitor taskbar being the only decent one due to Win10 still not having something like that IIRC), but a year sub for like $3.00 while a decent deal just was "lol no" territory.

With this, I might jump off the OSS solution KeePass.
The bundle is worth it for fences and Display Fusion.

Hmmmm maybe I will used it as a backup solution to my Keepass setup once I got my passwords sorted on enpass and transfer it to Keepass.

It being Ad supported isn't a big deal for me as I would be using the main site too much.

Once a service goes free, I start to get suspicious of motives.
I've been a long time subscriber of LastPass and this news actually makes me think about leaving.

The whole.... "If you aren't paying, you are the product" thing comes to mind.

Time to read up on this.

A free password manager software? How about no?

LastPass is great, though.

I can understand why some people choose other alternatives if it better fits their workflow, but LastPass is excellent and regularly tops lists of the best password keeper services.

It's also pretty damn close to free as is... I've had the premium model for years, and rarely paid more than $4 or $5/year with coupons.

This is great news for me since I really just want to easily look up my last pass passwords on my phone when I need them.

LastPass has a sweet iOS Safari extension to autofill logins.
Any others do that?

they have plugins for every major browser. the Android app will auto fill on every other app. it's pretty sweet.

it's a good move to stay competitive. looking forward to new premium features.

Question: Does anyone see any advantage to using this over my current setup of KeePass + Dropbox or should I just keep my current setup?

I have the same setup.

To me, the advantage of Lastpass is the ease of use. If you're not tech savvy, setting up KeePass + Dropbox on multiple clients (laptop, desktop, mobile, etc) could be daunting and I'd definitely recommend Lastpass for that. Once it's setup though, that advantage disappears. My wife isn't tech savvy at all but once I got Keepass setup for her, she uses it every day.

More convenient. Just install the extension or app wherever you are, log in, and there are your passwords. Or simply log in on the web site if you just need to quickly access something. I haven't actually used KeePass, but I'm guessing it's a bit less convenient to set it up on a new device due to the separate cloud solution needed for syncing.

More secure. Yes, people are gonna say I'm crazy now, but I'm 100% sure that your data is more secure on LastPass' servers than on Dropbox. Of course, as long as your master password is strong that doesn't matter as much.

so who are they selling our information to for profit?

What information? All they store on their servers is encrypted blobs of data. Their extension is (obviously) JavaScript, and the code has been reviewed by independent security people, and it does what it says it does. Your actual password data is never sent to their servers in any decipherable form.

Yeah, the convenience is tempting, especially the browser extensions and especially on mobile. where KeePass is kind of clunky. Not so concerned with security as my Dropbox has a complex, KeePass produced password and 2FA.

Very nice. I've been a premium user for 3 years now. LastPass is awesome and I love being able to sign in with TouchID on my phone instead of typing in my looooong password.

I find that it has gotten better about properly updating my changed passwords to the entries in the vault. Had some minor issues before with needing to manually copy and paste my updated password on some sites but that is all good now.

Awesome. I had been using PasswdSafe on my phone for years and LastPass on PC. PasswdSafe is really crude looking but worked well. LastPass on mobile will make everytbing a lot easier with synching now.

I used safari on mobile so much that until extensions came along I had weak passwords simply because it was the only usable thing to do. iOS extensions + lastpass is fantastic

This is awesome. Just installed it on all my devices, gonna see how it works and if so I'll switch over from Keepass if I like it

I am using keychain between my mac and iphone and its good enough for me. Any advantages of using last pass over keychain?

That's my setup for KeePass already. The plugin lets you generate passwords easily, and also prompts you if you want to save your credentials whenever you login anywhere.

How does LastPass handle mobile particularly login to non-browser apps that doesn't have a share button?

I haven't tried that yet, since I haven't been paying for LP, but my understanding is that the LP app can actually fill in your details in just about any app (on Android at least) if you allow it

There are plugins for Keepass that allow this on Chrome and Firefox. Android too. The only one that doesn't have this is MacOS for whatever reason.
