...Yeah.

I like to think I have an open mind when it comes to different kinds of gaming experiences, but Cubivore is one of those games that does its damnedest to push my flexibility to the limit. I couldn't stop thinking Atari Jaguar when I was playing it - it has the same kind of blocky graphics, the same kind of tinny sonics, the same kind of mad-scientist experimentation with gameplay mechanics as that early 3D era. The main upgrade is the controller - being able to control the camera with the C-stick is a reminder of how bad we all had it back then.

I just can't get into this game. I can see why it's a cult classic, but its idiosyncracies only succeed in turning me off rather than courting my curiosity.

Fine, I'll take your copy. I loved Cubivore. I kept checking it out from work and playing it, then returning it until a price drop. The price drop happened on my day off.

I used Gamefly to get it. It goes for way too much money for me to want to buy.. especially now that I know for a fact that I don't like it.

I sold mine recently. I had no intention of going back into it at all, after I left it cover with dust since 2years or so ago....

This game was simply a wasted effort. Sure, it was 'kind of' stylish. It had its own thing going for it, but when it came down to it, the gameplay was pretty boring.

I remember being miffed that NOA didn't publish Cubivore here despite it having been made by Marigul (one of their partners/subsidiaries), but after buying it at full price ($59.99) and only playing it for as long as I could stand, I understood immediately why NOA stayed away from it.

Too bad though, it could've been great had it been just a little more like E.V.O. for Snes.

I was hoping for it to be like E.V.O. too.

I had a copy of Cubivore on order, but then I got to play it at a friends for awhile and didn't like it. I agree with the first poster about the game pushing the limit of my toleration for wacky art and design. When my copy arrived I never opened it, it's still sealed in a stack on my game shelf. I guess one day I'll have to open it and give it another try, cuz I doubt I'll find anywhere to return it for my 60 bucks back. I suppose I'd have liked it a lot more if I had found it cheap somewhere... :(

the complete and utter absurdity of the game kept me playing for awhile. I had my three younger siblings watching me play and we were just laughing at the game the whole time. Couldn't play the game on my own though, so I sold it for a 500% profit over what I paid for it.

I liked it enough to play it for a couple of hours, but my wife actually played Cubivore from beginning to end and loved it.

I don't know. On one hand I really like the idea of this game...playing around with the concept of evolution. And some of the crazy details and presentation. But it's hard not to accept that the game is just not made very well. It's not very fun once the oddity wears off. I just sold mine for a decent profit.

Leave it to Bobby to come in with the pictures! :D I was just waiting for you to chime in.

I personally enjoyed my trip in the blocky land of Cubivore. I couldn't really see myself "completing" it, but it was fun while it lasted. My personal favorite is the little Cubivore "figurines" that I bought where you can create your own.

If I remember correctly, it also had awesome JPN boxart as well.

I loved it, but I was really annoyed to find out you need to get all the mutations to be able to beat the game. I can't see myself going back to find each one, but I thought it was really interesting and pretty fun.

Throw me in the *I loved the hell outa that game* basket...

Honestly, it's one of the only games that I felt an actual caring for in-game characters.

Uh, you don't need all the mutations. There may be an extra ending for getting all 150 (I wouldn't know, I still haven't gotten them all), but you only need 100 to do the endgame sequence and get an ending.

Hmmm, I figured you did. I think I only got 83, cause I was lazy, but I should check that out.

IMO, if you got that far, you should just go the rest of the way, especially since the game gives you plenty of opportunities to get a whole bunch of powerful mutations near the end, as long as you pick your meals carefully. There's also a heck of a fight at the end of the game, which can be pretty tough if you don't have some of the stronger mutations when you hit 100.

how much did [Gamecrazy] ask?

Considering I got a complete copy of Ikaruga for $13.49, that's probably how much they're charging for used copies of Cubivore. Great deal for everyone except the poor sucker who traded it in.

Well, special ordering a game is $6. They search all the stores in the nation and get a copy to you as quick as possible. I think there are blacklisted games too though. Luckily Cubivore wasn't blacklisted.

I picked it up yesterday. It was $20.

So I paid a total of $26 (plus tax I suppose).

I think the game was charming. I never played the US version but I imagine it's pretty much the same.

And my god. Whoever compares this game with any 2600 title is way off the mark. Let's a least find a more suitable insult.

I enjoyed the game a lot. It's a simply game that I can just put on some good music and just play for an hour or so. I'm planning on eventually replaying it and unlocking a good portion of all the mutations if not all of them.

The only thing I could complain about is maybe some sort of multiplayer or minigames. They could've made it so your character doesnt die and you can keep building up points and then battle each other.

But hey I got it for like 20 bucks so I can't complain too much. Overall it was an entertaining experience. I could probably sell it for a profit now, right?

?

Who compared it to a 2600 game? Unless you just don't remember what the Jaguar is...
