Late to the party: Star Control 2

I never came across this game in my PC days but have recently downloaded the free PC remake of it "The Ur Quan Masters" and am loving the hell out of it.

Just travelling from star system to star system collecting resources has me captivated. Dodging level 5 earthquakes FTW!. It is like a far more accessable version of Elite.

Although, I have a problem, I am trying to fly back to the Sol system with a ship full of minerals and every time, this fucking probe comes out of nowhere and pwns me. My ship doesnt have the turning circle to get the probe in target range.

Is there some other way to avoid this probe or am I doomed to load an earlier save game?

well i dont want to spoil it but yeah
eventually the probes wont be a problem in the game.

oh avaioding it now? i dunno its been quite a few years heh.

Keep lots of saves, often times you will find yourself in a position where you have to load an earlier one.

The probes, you will have to battle, for now... you will see more of them. Your best bet is to find an ally whose ships can take them down, or trick out your main ship with turning jets. If this one probe is proving unavoidable, try hopping from system to system to get home. Usually they'll ctach up to you though

Don't give up on this one, you are in for one helluva game

I love this game. I wish they could use the semi-isometric 3d battle plane from star control 3 in the remake though, that was the only decent part about the 3rd one.

Now this is a thread worthy of the title "Late to the Paty!"

Great great game..

This is a game that is always in my all-time top 10 lists. If anybody hasn't experienced this thing from beginning to end at least 5 or 6 times, they're missing out on one of the most genius games ever created.

Star Control III as a bust, but II is something that needs to receive a full remake.

I just wish we could see game design like this in this gen....

StarControl 2 on 3DO, boy does that bring back memories! They should release the Multiplayer portion on Xbox live Arcade, that would be the bomb! I would own all! Definately one of my all time faves!

One of my favorite games of all time. I envy your newness to it. Awesome music too. Battle mode with a friend kicks ass too, but you really need the 3do version for that to be enjoyable, and digging up that relic would be a pain

AWESOME AWESOME GAME

One of my top 10 easy, and one of the few games I actually ever finished and replayed and finished again... it was that damn good...

I just installed it and the nostalgia is overwhelming.

Now I have a decision...finish paper due in two hours or Star Control II

Your paper is meaningless whilst the Earth remains under an Ur Quan slave shield. Follow your heart.

Don't forget to *enjoy the sauce*

What are the game's creators up to now?

They formed Toys for Bob, which was recently purchased by Activision I think. I'm pretty sure their most recent game was Madagascar. Unfortunately, some problem with the rights to Star Control has prevented them from working directly on any game in the series since 2. 3 was done for accolade by entirely different people, and after 3 the rights have just been sitting in limbo as far as I understand. I guess all they need is the title rights since they were able to release Star Control 2 on sourceforge under "the Ur-Quan Masterss"

They did another game for the PSX with a similar combat style to SC2, though a different setting

I can't recall the name though... something Wars. Had a hideous cover, and probably looks equally hideous if you play it now

That title is Unholy Wars. They also did the PSX/PC platformer "Pandemonium", where you play as a jester or some woman. I played the demo and it was alright, but never played the full game.

What a great game. I played the hell out of it back on the Genny too, and multiplayer was a blast. So many intricate strategies to try. Fun stuff!

Pretty much everything you need to know about the game is the fact that the README.TXT file was huge because Reiche and Ford added so much crap at the very end of development that the printed instruction manual was obsolete.

I know Reiche was one of the dudes involved with the very early days of EA and is therefore a very smart developer by nature, but SC2 seems like one of those once-in-a-lifetime inspirations to me, one that I'm glad worked out so well.

I love to get systems for a "worth of it" game and I have always feel curious about 3DO. Would you reccomend me to get a 3DO to play this. I love space games.

Or do you thinks this freeware version is much better?

Considering this is a port of the 3DO version and it combines the best features of both PC and 3DO, can't say I can recommend that. If you decide to get the freeware version, make sure to grab speech and 3DO music packs.

As far as I can tell, only real benefit to the 3DO version over the freeware would be multiplayer with controllers. Also, It's nice to have the 3DO speech on the freeware version, but I recommend turning it off and pumping the music instead. Some of the voices ( Pkunk :( ) aren't so hot, but the music is incredible (MOD format ftw) and gives you a much better impression of the alien's personality than the voice does. One of the few things I thought Star Con 3 did better than Star Con 2 was the voices.
