LCD tech is just plain shit

The iPhone I bought had one stuck pixel, took a month of my telco fucking around before it was replaced. The replacement has four stuck pixels. My asus lcd monitor has one semi-stuck pixel that comes and goes. An LCD monitor I bought a few years back had more stuck pixels than I could count.

This is a shit, flawed, garbage technology.

my 32 and 42 inch tvs are perfect my samsung 19 inch monitor has one dead pixel but its at the very bottom so the windows bar pretty much covers it up.

Or, you have shit luck. My iPhone, LCD monitor, and LCD TV are all flawless as far as I can tell, and I dont recall ever being bothered or having noticed a stuck pixel in any LCD device Ive owned. Its definitely not a perfect tech, but its definitely not 'garbage' technology.

I've never had a dead or stuck pixel. But my iPod Touch's res is 480x320, or 153600 pixels. Who cares if two or three are bad?

i'll take 1 or 2 stuck pixels over shitty crts that get burn-in, fucked up colors, lose brightness, and a hoarde of other issues that happen over the years.

yeah OLED is superior but it's still a few years before it becomes mass market.

I've never gotten an lcd with a stuck pixel.. and ive bought over a dozen for the home and office.

Wait correction, I had one on my PSP but ended up returning it

Got my replacement iPhone. There appears to be some sort of faint black smudge on the LCD itself, under the glass. In the middle horizontally, about a quarter from the top vertically. This is just unbelievable, cant win. Fuck this technology and fuck dirty LCD engineers.

Haven't seen any stuck pixels yet but you can bet there's a fucker or two hiding somewhere.

My main problem with LCD tech is the horrible black levels. I've got a 2008 Samsung 650 Series HDTV and the black levels are shitty compared to my old 20" CRT TV. Every LCD I've seen has been poor at blacks.

Then there's shit like clouding/flash-lighting or whatever... Too many problems when I'm shelling out over $2,000.

You should check out the 2008 Panasonic Plasmas. Amazing blacks and colors. Best TV's for the money right now, bar none.

It's a shame Plasma is dying out though. It's been good since it completely drove the prices down, but we can only hope Panasonic will keep making them.

Just wait until you get one. My Sharp LCD TV has a dead pixel. My Toshiba laptop has a dead pixel. My iPhone either has 2 dead pixels, or some specs of dirt under the screen (not sure...cos they kinda look brown). My Samsung monitor has a pixel that goes stuck in and out (thankfully, it's fine more than not...I just have to apply pressure to it to get it to go back).

The only 2 devices I have free of dead/stuck pixels are my DS and PSP.

ahah.... I'm the complete reverse. Let me tell you about my luck

40" LE40M87BD - ZERO dead pixels
32" LG - ZERO dead pixels
19" TFT - ZERO dead pixels
PSP - ZERO dead pixels
15" Laptop - ZERO dead pixels

3 LCD monitors at home. No dead pixels.

50+ LCD monitors at work. Only one screen that had a line of dead pixels down it.

Works good enough for me.

LCD technology IS shit, but dead/stuck pixels aren't exactly the reason why...

For the record, I've only ever experienced a dead pixel once (my original DS). This includes the 150+ LCDs and laptops I've setup and worked with at work as well as my own equipment (laptops and portable devices).

Samsungs new 950 line uses LED backlighting which apparently produces great blacks from the things I've been reading about the new sets. Really thinking of getting the 46" when I get a new apartment in January.

They look nice, but they still ghost when compared to a Plasma. Also, they're double the price of a Panasonic Plasma.

Unless you're putting the TV in a very bright room, or are paranoid about burn-in, I don't see any reason to go with the LED TVs until they drop in price.

thats odd because i have:

iPhone 2G...perfect screen
PSP [white UK 1st gen version]....perfect screen
DS lite..perfect screen
20" Gateway [Samsung screen]...perfect screen

maybe in some weird twist of events the LCD gods decided to hate you?

Well, they usually use less power, which may be good with rising energy prices.

Haven't had a dead pixel in ages.
I think my launch first gen DS had one.

My cheap-ass old LCD TV has a few dead pixels, 3 or 4, can't remember, don't ever notice them. My new SyncMaster 220m is perfect, looks great, no dead pxls. My new 32" Magnavox 720p LCD is flawless. My old 17" LCD monitor is flawless, my 14.1" laptop LCD is flawless, my wife's 15" laptop LCD has one dead pixel that you only notice in certain situations.

All in all, seems fine to me. I like LCD picture quality too, especially for the price.

Eh, stuck pixels are only really obvious on a white background. I've got one on my 24" @ 1920x1200 and I can only spot it on white backgrounds...such as browsing GAF ;(.

iPhone, Macbook, Dell 20" monitor, DS lite, and no dead or stuck pixels.

Sorry, OP, you have shit luck. Don't buy any lottery tickets.

My laptop has LED backlighting and the blacks are ASTONISHING. Then again, my laptop screen is just awesome in every way.

Edit: Actually I had to get it replaced once because suddenly a red line appeared vertically down the screen. I called Apple and they said it was dying. Sigh.

2 PSPs for a combined total of 5
One 22'' LCD monitor with 3

but my three MP3 players and my two cell phones and my laptop have been spared.

All my LCDs have been good, but I've definitely seen stuck pixels in monitors. I also went from a .2 dot pitch flat screen CRT (which had amazing picture) to LCD. Thinking about it makes me cry. OLED will actually be a leap forward, instead of a step back (in terms of image quality, I mean).

makes me wonder why he has had 11 lcd screens already lol :lol

I dont like LCD tech neither..i think its rubbish..and get this, i think CRT Tube based technology still IS THE BEST with HD content

I hear you, my Acer screen had a couple of dead pixels littered across the screen (black). And now my new HP monitor has 2 that sometimes light up a pretty bright green.

I'm just thankful that my HD-TV didn't have any (Samsung).

In terms of image, it is. The main thing I've noticed on practically every LCD I've used (Samsung, Dell, NEC, Apple, ViewSonic, BenQ...etc), the biggest color troubles are in the blacks/grays/other dark colors. I always end up seeing gamma banding instead of smooth gradients, and it drives me &#$@!ing nuts.

Those....are all problems commonly associated with LCDs. Plus tons more.

Well lets see...

GBA
DS (so that's two)
40" Sony Bravia
32" Viewsonic, sold to friend and purchased a
32" Sony Bravia
15" really old LCD monitor (gave to a friend, still works fine)
22" (i think) HP Touchsmart computer screen
22" LCD monitor (different computer)
PSP
Touch screen Karaoke machine (my dad's)

and one 50" Elite Plasma screen

So total of 11 LCDs and 1 Plasma all work fine.

EDIT: O rite, forgot phones. Add like 4 to that list.
EDIT2: Gamegear and old fat gameboy count? +2

I've been pretty fortunate. My cheapie Gateway laptop's LCD has no dead/stuck pixels, nor do any of the Nintendo handhelds I own, those including a Fatboy, original GBA, GBA SP, the revised-backlight GBA SP, my DS Phat, my DS Lite.

Still, anytime I buy any technology with an LCD associated with it, I always cringe a little the first time I fire it up in anticipation of a fat, dead pixel or three smack in the middle of the screen. It is a blatant limitation/problem associated with the tech, but they've all got their vices.

LCD is far from shit. It made possible to move on to flat TVs/monitors, are much cheaper to produce than the old CRTs and consume less energy. Of course, they have in general less vibrant colours, black looking grey, had for years various issues with refreshing and watching at wide angles etc., so I see where LCD sceptics are coming from, but in general they made achievable and affordable improvements and changes that people wanted for years. We'll move on to more promising technologies within 5-10 years (if not sooner), but for now they're a reasonable option.

I experienced one dead/hot pixel in my life (always green).

They make great monitors but they're terrible for television.

They're a stopgap technology, though I'd rather have plasma or DLP as a better stopgap.

OP is jinxed. Keep your tech away from this accursed pariah.

can't wait.. i really think it's a horrible technique for tv screens. eventhough bg improvements have been made. I have one (pretty good one to) in the bedroom.. no, just no.. Plasma is far from perfect to, but better.

bring on the laser!

edit, the only broken pixel i ever had was on a DS.. changed it the next day.

Oh jesus, quit exaggerating. Current LCDs destroy the prior tech - geometry challenged, color bleeding shitty CRT. Everyone's going to wax rhapsodical about Trinitron now, and start sounding like a dirty old beard going on about vinyl and valve response. MOST CRTs WEREN'T SONY TRINITRONS. And my two Trinitorns both suffered appalling geometry issues.

Shut up.

A good modern LCD provides a far better viewing experience than your 300 pound CRT piece of shit. LALAALALALALLALALALALALALALA!

(Kuro-level Plasma is better, but seriously, get over yourselves, nobody gives a shit. It's called technology and typically it gets better every year. Unlike CRT which basically maxed out about ten years ago.)

Or they just enjoy the color black.

LCD televisions are improving by the generation, and I agree CRT had a good run and its time has passed, but I'm holding onto mine until it breaks or an LCD that doesn't display some milky gray approximation of black AND doesn't cost two times my monthly rent comes along.
