That's how you know it will have collector's value, would be my take. So weird that nobody would want it at the time of release. Surely produced in tiny quantities. Looks like you might be able to force the console out of the surround, breaking it.

I reckon this could be one of the most collectible versions of this console because there's a good chance it won't be looked after and rarity is often the most important facet of desirability.
