I simply find it ironic , hence funny. That the only "considerable" power defying the PRO-syrian current establishment of a government (if you want to call it that). Got blown up into many peices.

Why are we "lol-ing" about someone getting killed :(

GAF protip: You can't call people derogatory slurs or laugh when peoples' pets die here, but watching the herd of humanity get thinned a little is always a cause for lollin'

Here is a blantant contradiction for you, people are paying more attention to a 3 letter word then any real impact or consequences of this news.

I think it's lol too, in an absurd kind of way. Any lebanese person would understand the loling. Lebanon is all about building hopes up for change (not saying that Hariri was the shining light Lebanon was waiting for...not. at. all), but then, slowly, and very surely, watching these hopes get blown to bits. Literally. It's lol because it reminds us how silly we were to think that a politician thinking independently would be allowed to exist in Lebanon. As for who did it, fingers are pointed to Syria, although this assassination would seem counterproductive. Sure, they hate Hariri. But it's a universal fact in Lebanon that people hate you, whoever you are.

But why would they kill an opponent of their enemy?

Well actually, some people have thrown around the idea that their trying to frame Syria for it so they can force their army out of Lebanon.

Are you currently living in Lebanon? My Uncle just left from there yesterday, he stayed in one of the hotels on that exact street. How's the atmosphere there right now?

Not currently living in Lebanon, no. I'm basically following every happening through friends and family, every day. Aside from obvious repercussions, no actual "official" violence has emerged. Yet. Further, there aren't many lebanese actually worried themselves about suddenly going back to the "civil war" era fighting. That's nonsense. For now, at least.

The atmosphere hasn't changed much. The feelings in Lebanon now aren't one bit different from the feelings that were present a week ago. Now, it's just that there's an opportunity and there's room to express them. I'm not sure what the consequences will be, if any. It seems more agitated than I previously thought, not just physically, but also in terms of Western coverage and involvement in the matter. Everything is just odd, considering how relatively "peaceful" and uneventful the country's last decades has been.

Here's a good site:

Feb. 16, 1992. An Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) helicopter attacked the automobile of Arab leader Abbas Musawi today in Lebanon. The Israeli helicopter fired rockets at the car and Mussawi and his family died a grsily death.

Burned alive alive along with Mussawi, was his wife Siham and their infant child. Two other cars carrying Mussawi's aides were also rocketed by the Israelis. When another automobile arrived to pick up the wounded survivors , the Israeli helicopter returned and destroyed the vehicle carrying the wounded.

"The opportunity to hit someone like Musawi does not present itself every day," an Israeli official inolved in the planning of the assassination said. In Jerusalem a senior Israeli adviser said Musawi's death "is good for Israel."

You speak a lot of sense. Plus, now the US and Britain have an interest in getting the Syrians out of Lebanon, so shit is going to get messy (again). At least, this is according to my old man, who moans about the shitty situation in Lebanon everytime I go see him. He wants to go back and retire there, but it's all fucked up and it pisses him off. Obviously.

So we've got some civil unrest and further instability in the region, but I look at positively. This is a great opportunity to learn about Lebanon and Syria. I really don't know enough about them. I mean, it worked for Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Iran. You can't buy better education.

The Mossad claim may hold some ground:

Lebanon (south) harbors Hizbullah.

Syria (and Iran) support Hizbullah.

Hizbullah goes against Israel.

As long as Syria stays, Hizbullah's strength ++.

Mossad executes Hariri and tries to frame Syria.

Syria is troubled, Hizbullah loses an important supporter in the area = 2 birds w/ 1 stone.

Israel, wins. Fatality!!

Now some conspiracy theory shit. America has been budies with Israel forever. Back when the current Lebanese president's presidency has been extended another term, Lebanese complained about the Syrian involvement. US government also got involved, putting pressure on Syria? and since US considers Syria part of the axis of evil..... This is farfetched though. Just trying to see the sides who would benefit from this. I found it funny though that the US never cared that Mubarak, for example, seems to have an infinite number of continues. But alas, he is an ally.

Sounds farfetched, i mean Syria would have a clear political goal in participating. I think its uncessary to dig deeper, the writing is sorta on the wall. But meh.

The Syrians control most of Lebanon, they can care less about what anyone says or does, especially people like Harriri or Jumblat...They have 15,000 troops and many undercover intelligence agents working inside Lebanon, and if they wanted Harriri gone, they would have snuffed him out in the middle of the night...This is the work of someone that wanted to get some political backlash and it seems to be working...The UN resolution didn't seem to go anywhere, the U.S. sanctions didn't go anywhere, something needed to get stirred!!!

Syria possibly assasinating a former Prime Minister.
North Korea admitting it has Nuclear Weapons.
Iran getting rhetoric from the US.

Maybe Kinesis had a point.
