Leo Putting Money Where his Mouth is - Restoring Galapagos Islands

Good guy Leo saving good stuff:

The initiative, in partnership with Re:wild, an organisation founded this year by a group of renowned conservation scientists and DiCaprio, the Galápagos National Park Directorate, Island Conservation, and local communities, aims to rewild the entire Galápagos Islands, as well as all of Latin America’s Pacific archipelagos.

The $43m pledge will fund Galápagos projects including efforts to restore Floreana Island, home to 54 threatened species, and reintroduce 13 locally extinct species, including the Floreana mockingbird – the first mockingbird described by Charles Darwin.

I would not call him a "good guy" but it is good to see people practicing what they beach and restoring the environment.

Unless I missed something I think ponying up millions of dollars to save endangered environments and biomes is what a good guy would do.

Restoring them so he can fly 21 year old girls out to fuck on the beaches, right?

(I am not condemning that behaviour)

I'm okay with this, if he wants to pretend to be an activist, fine. Spend some of that mad money on conservation instead of trying to guilt me into not driving when you're jetsetting the world.

So do we hate capitalism, or environmentalism, or just when capitalists do environmentalism? I'm lost.

We hate Hypocrites.

People who use a ton of carbon then virtue signal that they are putting effort to reduce a tiny amount of said carbon.

edit - ME, not we. I speak for no one but myself.

I mean before we throw out hot takes like "guy fixes .0001% of what he fucked up, yay him"

Do we even know what his contributions / positive environmental impact is vs. net detriment to the environment? Seems like jumping to conclusions.

It is image control.

Sorry this reeks of the climate change thing... IE, "oh no this person is helping the environment... but they pollute too!" ... so we should just let things go to hell?

I don't think Leo is worried about his image.

Well it isn't that. I said it was good to do, but it also has many other benefits like positive press for said personality, and an image boost to being a "good guy". I mean it is far better than that "hey celebrities lets all sing Imagine together in the beginning of the pandemic" garbage that went around. In no way am I implying that we should not act responsible with our planet, we are stewards of it, and should treat it well.

Nothing stops him to donate it anonymous and not shout it from the roof tops. The dude is flying on top of it in private yets which are extremely polluting for the environment while he's at it.

It's all about image for the guy.

Not sure why everyone is so hostile towards this.
Dude is spending millions on this, good on him and on the Galapagos Island.
This concept that nothing you do is good unless you are a literal saint is silly.

Yeah it's a bit hypocritical while moving around in private jets and yachts but at least he is also spending massive amounts of money on this. It's different than if he was just flying around on his private jet simply going to shitty conferences to tell broke people to not use plastic bottles.

I for one think that only African and South American primitive tribes should be able to donate 43 million dollars, because they are the only ones who truly live a sustainable life.

These super wealthy people with all their money can go shove it. Go buy more extravagant things that only you enjoy instead of spending some of your vast wealth to help save key parts of the world for everyone else you fucking assholes.

Also, I see you Angelina Jolie and Bono trying to make life better for poor people in third world countries. Using your money and influence to actually try to effectuate change while you also enjoy the luxuries of a successful career. How dare you enjoy what you worked for AND try to help others.

It's hilarious but also true... I mean wtf?

Some of these people in this thread man... it has to be jealousy. I *wish* I could be as awesome as Leo AND help out the environment with piles of cash. Who would hate on him for that? Senseless.

Nice. Impressive when people commit, especially to such a titanic proportion.. You can tell he doesn't want the islands shuttered.

Underrated post

It is image control.

So, a dude sacrifices some money so that people will think better of him, and for a good cause, and the reaction is to be like "How dare you try to make yourself look better." Honestly, everyone complaining should be mocked and shamed. You would create a world where no one would do good.

"Oh, you only did good because you wanted people to like you,"

"Okay..."

"That makes you secretly bad."

There is some real jealousy up in this topic. I get it, it's not fair that some people are so attractive, and able to use that to make money and live an awesome life that is far more interesting than what most of us are doing. Stop being salty.

If someone cures cancer because they want to be famous are we all supposed to be like "Well he cured cancer for the wrong reasons. Guess I gotta die from cancer now." It should be the opposite, we should applaud people when we think they are doing something positive, and we shouldn't care about their motives. And really, if Leo hasn't done anything really bad lately, what's so wrong with him wanting people to like him?

If you want to deep dive, here’s a question: how will that money be used? Will it actually go towards anything actionable or will it be used to cover “expenses” and personnel?

These questions go for any charity.

At least he's not the one spending money to watch DiCaprio movies, instead of helping the environment.

There's no winning in today's cynical woke world.

im surprised people even have time to respond to the thread with all the time they're spending maintaining their farms, composting, converting their waste to fertilizer, saving/reusing old clothing, buying only 3rd and 4th hand electronics etc...

1. It would have been in the news whether it came from Leo or someone else (tabloids etc) what he is doing there. There is 0 chance it wouldn't.
2. His goal is to rejuvenate the Galapagos Islands... not end carbon footprints or climate change single-handedly.
3. Would you rather him do nothing? Because the "I'd rather him do it and not talk about it thing" is idiotic as explained in #1.

I don't get why I'm supposed to be outraged here.

Oh you know why.

Lots of insecure beta males that weren't banned after you know what that need a safe space from HOLLYWOOD and WOKE CULTURE. Just look at all the salty bitches in just this thread complaining about what someone else does with their money. Meanwhile these cucks are crying on the internet over pronouns and people who are genuinely better than them. Not a good look.

I remember Leo going to Calgary a few years back during a Chinook and mistaking a warm breeze for "Global Warming"

Justin Trudeau even had to talk to him.

An ardent environmentalist, DiCaprio was widely derided by Albertans last December after he described the province’s famous Chinook winds as “terrifying” evidence of climate change. The Chinooks are natural phenomena that carry warm air over the Rocky Mountains in the middle of winter.

I think I just don't like leo and find him superficial. I hope his intentions are true and he keeps moving forward.
I hope i am wrong about him.

Expecting praise for every “good” deed is a beta move.

You ain't lyin'

Who is expecting praise for every good deed?

Apparently the media reporting what a celebrity does = the celebrity doing that thing only for recognition / praise.

The logic of these people... well... there isn't any.

This again reeks of nothing.

Dude literally didn't know what the Chinook winds were (neither do I) and thought "oh shit this cold place is hot". The worst you can say is he should have done his research on them? Idk.

I thought I heard on the Adam Carolla Show that this dude has birthday parties where rich friends cut him $300+k checks to give him as gifts.

Not sure if it's true or not, or if missing important context (like money goes to charity).

It’s what a millionaire trying to buy good deeds does. It is positive and necessary as the money has to come from somewhere, and better a private individual who has it to spare that at least cares about the cause is positive.

But signing a check ≠ doing the work

As someone who has actually sacrificed time and labor taking sabbatical and not earning a paycheck to do volunteer work I find it insulting that an individual can get credit for doing the same thing we constantly criticize corporations for... buying their virtue and expecting it to have the same currency as actually dedicating a part of ones life to a good cause as opposed to checkbook to a good cause.

Hope this clarifies what you are missing, and again the money is necessary for the positive change and has to come from somewhere. But the necessary part of “Necessary Evil” don’t erase the evil part.

I appreciate whatever charity work you’ve done … but, seriously?? He earned that money. No one just gave it to him.

He’s not a corporation, he’s a human being (and if I come off as some Leo fan I’m really not - Django was my favorite film with him in it).

I’ll never understand how people can pretend celebrities or wealthy people investing in good things is always a power play / image thing. No one is requiring them to do a damn thing for anyone else.

He did earn it with and with incredible skill, I think he is under appreciated as an actor because he was a teenage heartthrob. Let’s not pretend his net worth is from his acting paychecks though. That charitable foundation of his was made when he was a multimillionaire from his investment portfolio and he expanded his portfolio into a nonprofit. Because of all the elite investment brokers he meets as a celebrity. Necessary evil again

Would it not evoke sincerity if he proceeded as he was doing with his investments but we receive this press release from the government of Ecuador when they announce the directive officially from the respective government offices so the people doing the work get the credit and get to thank those investing?

Or if he wants the credit immediately to undertake 2 years off acting and being a celebrity to work full time representing his own charitable foundation to be active in decision and implementing this at direction of the scientists involved in this effort, also volunteering for the labor work that will be needed? (anyone who has worked in the nonprofit sector and in the corporate sector can tell how inept most all in nonprofit administration are and how they need all the help they can administratively but can’t pay for it)

But he didn’t. He allowed himself to be the face of this outright to get the credit and try and be an inspiration to get more to invest into his foundation and those involved as a sales pitch without having to do an ounce of real work towards the actual effort of reclamation. I think those examples are examples of actual virtuous acts, and what he is doing is virtue signaling.

And I hope he proves me wrong cause those islands, their wildlife and all the science they have inspired are more valuable to me than my pride, my bitterness, my love for being a pessimist and all his money combined.

He gave his Instagram account over to the guy who runs the environmental group who convinced him to donate.. (which is in the first sentence of the article, and explained in detail later.)

It's called awareness.. it brings more money to causes, and celebrities who use their celebrity for that get bashed endlessly by folks like yourself and it's bizarre.

Paula A Castaño, who will take over DiCaprio’s Instagram and Twitter accounts to promote critical interventions needed to rewild the Galápagos, said: “Time is running out for so many species, especially on islands where their small populations are vulnerable and threatened.

This is just not very pragmatic. For the record, I care very little about other people's charitable efforts. However, his $43m donation can affect more change than you ever could if you donated your whole life to doing the work on the ground. One person cannot accomplish very much compared to someone financing hundreds of workers. That's not to diminish the workers on the ground, because they're needed too. He should stick to what he's good at.

Additionally, what is your goal in the charitable work you did? To increase your self-esteem? Or did you see a need you wanted to do what you could to help solve? If you wanted to solve a need, well he's doing that. If you wanted to build your self-esteem, well, he's doing that too. What difference does it make what his reasons are if he's accomplishing the same goal as you?

Seems mighty petty and jealous.

That’s a more philosophical line of thought that will inevitably move goalposts so I try and retain that things related to morality or honor remain black and white. It is not pragmatic if your end goal is to make as much money as possible and gather as much material goods and wealth and power as you can where you need gray areas for moral ambiguity. It is pragmatic if your goal is being the best version of yourself you can be to look in the mirror and be happy with yourself without regret at the end of your life.

I have more important things to think about to reach those goals than what anyone else thinks of me nor do I care what random strangers on the webs thinks of me, sorry I don’t return the engagement of your pettiness.

And again the difference is one is WORKING (actual work, not paying someone else to do the work) towards achieving the goal, which he can easily do as the head of his own nonprofit that is one of the three major organizations involved here, and the other is paying off without doing any actual production towards achieving the goal. As a producer and director which he’s done, those administrative skills would be useful. Ask FEMA and all the people it constantly fails if it’s more important to have the cash or actual competency.

And parading around now in press conferences rather than having the government officials and scientists give the press conference and thank his nonprofit and him as well for his donations. It’s not about me, it’s about learning from history and not sanctifying the modern day equivalent of barons buying prayers from monks. Buying virtue was stupid and meaningless then as it is now.
