Letdown Imminent: Animal Crossing DS Online

From a U.S. promotional retail brochure:

Animal Crossing isn't a game. It's a way of life. In the franchise's Nintendo DS debut, you'll be able to experience that life wherever you are and share designs, info, and items with distant friends, via a wirless connection.
I'd have hope that this is only a subset of the "wireless connection" features except the use of distant friends leaves me disheartened. I guess we'll find out the truth soon enough.

Now proceed with your seemingly mandatory doomed comments with, of course, some of the letters cleverly substituted by numbers.

So? WTF is keeping people from posting their name or whatever on a forum like Gaming-Age? I never played the first but isn't the whole communication component for going to specific people's towns on their memory card, sending items to specific people, etc?

Nintendo sets the record straight, Animal Crossing not a game, debate over!!

are you going to ban yourself and go all angsty again like you did with Nintendogs. That was too hilarious.

POST THE REST OF ALL OF THAT PROMOTIONAL BROCHURE! OKTHNXBYE!

i don't know why this is "doomed"-worthy, but i guess this is as good a time as any to reiterate how much I hate Animal Crossing.

You realize this pretty much confirms that you'll be able to play with friends who are not by you? Distant? Far away? Online? Etc?

Nah they use that sentence the same way the Dalai Lama says that Buddism is not a religion but a way of life. That rethorical, not "factual"

Everyone who has played Animal Crossing knows that it is a game, and a deep one at that.

I was never a huge fan of AC, thought it was a pretty cool diversion. But this will be great on DS, being able to easily make designs with the touch pad, and also being able to easily touch-type messages to people all over the world will be great. A definite DS killer app to show off online.

Of Course you can... I hope you were joking...
Of course I was. I don't see how this is remotely doom-worthy either, apart from giving Amir0x chance to post how much he hates another popular Nintendo franchise :D

The only way you can play "distant friends" with a "wireless connection" is over "the Internet," to which Nintendo already "confirmed" the game would have.

Remember, Nintendo is trying to downplay the fact that you can play this stuff online. The words are different, but the functionality is still going to be there.

Correct version:

You realize this pretty much confirms that you'll be able to trade with friends who are not by you? Distant? Far away? Online? Etc?

It's a clever Nindorks tactic, have them come into the thread with low expectations and have them leave satisfied. I'm on to you bastards!

Edit: Ah, ic what you mean. If you can't visit other towns and interact with other players online that would be wholy lame. It would take most of the mojo out of this game.

Edit2: Wait, there's no way to share info (ie. communicate with someone in their town) without visiting it first. Playing this game online would be useless without being able to interact with others....Nintendo is that stupid (i think).

The touch type alone would make this ac a bazillion times better than AC gamecube. And the fact you can send letters to real people (and not some generic keyword recognizing machine) is awesome. This is the game animal crossing GC should have been.

I forsee amazatron sales

I'm still trying to figure out what you guys are seeing that is negative in any way??

Why would you assume you can't play by yourself?

I hate (or dislike) the following Nintendo franchises - Pokemon, Mario Party and Animal Crossing.

But Animal Crossing has a special place in my black heart. It is my arch nemesis in videogames! My all time most hated game. That's a lot of hate, and you of all people know how many things I hate!

No, its confirmed you can have friends visit your village and you can talk to them. It's not limited to trading.

What? Really?

THE TREE-CHOPPING MAFIA SHALL RULE SUPREME.

From Gamespot. There was a video that showed it in action. Plus as far as I know, both those characters are the same main character model, which no other animal in the game uses. :)

I think it's way premature to assume one can't visit other towns based on a one sentence marketing blurb in a sales booklet. It doesn't even suggest such a thing isn't possible. I think you're getting worked up for nothing.

surely you can visit others in game.....

makes sense with nintendos "no playing with strangers" thing though....

They should allow for Village Raids like chop down all trees, dig up flowers, deface the house doors, just plain old WAR! :D

Allow me to take a nintendo dog along to piss on Mr. Resetti

A game, maybe, but its swimming in the shallow end. :P There's nothing deep about it.

To clarify better for the people that aren't getting the hints of the original poster, he is implying that if you read that ad correctly it does not mention anything from nintendo on being able to interact with other people online. The only thing it says you can do is share designs and items with other people. Now if since being able to visit other people in towns or possibly living in the same towns would be a feature for online you would be promoting pretty big the fact they did not include this information in the ad is very unsettling.

I will cross my fingers on this one and hope for the best, since Nintendo at this point has little experience in online I would still think living and visiting with other people in the same town would be a given. On the other hand I have been let down in the past by them so I will meet them halfway and stay moderately excited about this title now till E3 when we should get confirmation on this or not. If they have indeed messed it up, then I don't know what to say, I will be at a loss for words. If they haven't messed it up then I will renew my insatiable passion and wait for this game.

they should allow things that are actually fun to do like, ya know, something other than going from animal A to animal B 50 times for a rug and something other than poorly implemented fishing, fossil and bug catching side quests.

dude you forgot posting letters. maybe thats why you didn't like the game because you forgot to post letters. AT THE POSTOFFICE

speaking of letters

i remember writing the most simplistic letters imaginable and receiving completely incoherent responses in no way related to what i wrote

that was most fun... the realization that you're trying to communicate with virtual animals who can't even turn the most basic AI scripts to formulate a single sentence relating to what i wrote.

What's with the AC hate?

best "new" nintendo franchise this gen for sure

Great game, not necessarily something you play for hours every day but more like something cool to do when bored.

I haven't visited my AC Town in ages, hmm

I loved the NES basement I had going on in AC.

That will be SO much nicer on a portable.

At least until the PSP gets emu-on-a-(mem)-stick going!

basically i'm treating this like one of those 'chat room' online things- like msn messenger but your picture is an oversized dog with a banjo talking to an agoraphobic raccoon called Carol.

i could see it being quite amusing leaving offensive messages on the communal town message board - but that could grow old quite quickly :P depends if you live in the town with the same people every time you turn it on - could be pretty cool

Amir0x, you also forgot those trips to the lost property department of the police station, and the trips to the tropical island (if you had a GBA). Fun times. Of course, you totally ignored the Famicom games too, but that's understandable for someone who hates Nintendo like yourself (<----- SARCASM).

My fave thing about animal xing was trading shit with friends, or having them be disgusted at my house. So an online ability to do that would be reason enough for me to get this. I will then seal my DS shut with this inside it.

Thanks for the flashing sarcasm indicator!

I didn't forget about the Nintendo games, though. I just don't really include that in my opinion of Animal Crossing, them being their own independent games and Animal Crossing not really being a "classic game compilation" since I have to go through hundreds and possibly thousands of boring, mediocre "from point A to point B" quests to try to get everything. Or the somewhat better alternative of entering hopelessly long codes into the input so that I can receive a game that way :| If Animal Crossing was just a menu from which I could play a hundred NES game I'd probably totally dig it.

as for the lame attempt at GBA connectivity i did not care, rare fruit or whatever...

but if you can play multiplayer with visiting buddies you know you will never look back ;)

That game did due a pretty good job of making me want to grow oranges in my shitty apple infested town though :lol

Humble beginnings, my good friend. Would we have had 4 Swords if they hadn't first tested the water with Animal Crossing?

Heh. I'm sure we would have, but I don't really know the answer! I used the tingle thing in Wind Waker a lot, though. That was neat!
