There's something very charming about Perfect Blue. Maybe it's the allure of early internet stalking. Maybe it's the fantastic dub or quirky murder-mystery. I don't know.
I don't like a lot of anime, some but not a lot. Perfect Blue (imo) is a film Hitchcock would make if he was alive and living in Japan in the early 2000s. There's great tension and surprises and a very unexpected ending. It's also probably (with the exception of some hallucination sequences) the most reality-based anime I've ever seen.
It's a very vouyeristic film. Everyone is online. Everyone is stalking everyone. A film way ahead of it's time. I'm amazed that this was made before the advent of social networking. Was Japan really that ahead of the curve with blogs and fan pages?
Anyway, I would recommend this film even if you're not into anime...if you like tight thrillers.
