Let's Talk About Perfect Blue.

I found out about this film through LittleKuroboh's spoof on it. I became curious about it, and I found one of my favorite animated films.

I'll pick up the Blu-Ray when it comes out in the States.

I'm pretty sure he said that he wasn't influenced at all by it when making Black Swan.
Oh yeah, he just happened to accidentally make a movie about a tortured female performer seeking unsustainable perfection, who is haunted by her doppleganger who wants to replace her, whom she kills, after losing touch with reality, having her paintings talk to her, screaming in the bathtub, and ultimately going completely insane, and he just so happened to make that movie AFTER buying the rights to Perfect Blue, which has that exact same plot and sequence of events, and from which he had already stole said bathtub scene in his previous film, Requiem For A Dream. He was just following his muse! I'm sure the fact that he had the rights to Perfect Blue laying around was like... "Oh, those are still here? lol!"

Paprika > Perfect Blue > Millennium Actress > Tokyo Godfathers

Proper order of greatness.

EDIT: This thread was necro'd from February 2012, wasn't it.

So is this worth watching?

The animation looks a bit dated.....

Hell yes. The animation is pretty good, but it's a modern-day psychological thriller so there was no reason for them to go balls-out on the amount of frames throughout the entire film. The trailer in the OP isn't really very good.

I watched it for the first time last friday as part of an anime film festival and compared to the other new, shiny films I watched that day Perfect Blue's animation did look blurry and dated. However, and I strongly emphasis that word, don't let that put you off because you will miss out on an incredibly thrilling (and surreal at times) story.

Yes it was. Only a year old and I didn't feel that it required a new thread considering people here were asking about a blu-ray release. If a mod wishes for me to create a new thread then I'm sure they'll contact me.

I certainly hope they continue their Bebop "pedigree" and release the first batch region-free. The US DVD of Perfect Blue is criminal.

Subsequent pressings of set 1 and all of set 2 are region B locked, I'd advise against anyone without a multi region player importing Perfect Blue, tempting as it may be.

Just a heads up if anyone is interested.

The company that recently released the exceptional Cowboy Bebop Blu-rays are going to be putting out a Collector's Edition Blu-Ray combi pack of Perfect Blue at the end of the month. Once they run out they'll start releasing the standard version according to this website.

Your killing my wallet here!!!!

Take my money!

So bought! I adore this film.

Easily in my top 5 feature length animated movies. I really have to watch the rest of Satoshi Kon's work going by how much I enjoyed Perfect Blue. The animation was just gorgeous, and love the cold eerie vibe.

faux rape scene was way over the top, and almost killed it for me, still love it, but could do without the protracted nature of that scene, message didnt work, felt more like it was for pervs than to make a point

I'm glad you're back. If you ever went anywhere.

One of my favorite posters (and avatars, especially when it was animated. :)

Let's not forget Kon was also a mangaka. I recently purchased Opus and it's just as trippy as his movies. The link claims it wasn't completed (the last few pages are rough sketches), but as with most of Satoshi's stuff it's hard to tell if this wasn't done on purpose (since the story again blurs "manga-in-manga-reality" with "reality-in-manga-reality"... perhaps Kon was going all the way up to "reality-in-reality-reality :)

I wish this would get a North American Blu-ray release. All I have is the VHS and it's one of my favorites. Hell, give me all of Kon's films on Blu-ray along with Paranoia Agent and I would be a very happy man. It's a tragedy that he died so young.

Seriously. I'd buy it up right now if I could.

Get a region free Blu-ray player and watch it. Probably what I'll be doing.

Not sure what's up with the Paprika and Paranoia Agent hate in this thread, but anyway-

This movie goes into what I call the Spectrum Trilogy, which needs a good green flick to finish it off.

Deep Red
Perfect Blue

What can I add to this? Green Inferno? Soylent Green? Eh.

Yeah that felt a bit much. Lots of anime features nudity for the sake of it, and this scene felt that way. That said as someone who doesn't like anime, I really like Perfect Blue. Especially the soundtrack.

Aw thanks man! You've got a heck of a memory because I was away for years. I'd still have the animated version if I could, but I had to pick just one version of my cat that NeoGAF so generously photoshopped and I was always partial to Rikercat. Good to be back!

P.S. I still have Leroy and he's still awesome. https://vine.co/v/hnnEAHgEUHj

Satoshi Kon, the director of Millennium Actress, made this, right??? I will give this movie a try simply because Millennium Actress is a masterpiece.

Frankly, everything he made was more than worth watching. I loved his work. Really regret that I won't be able to see anything new from him.

I went out and bought Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Tokyo Godfathers as soon as I could after Kon's death was announced. I still haven't watched Millennium Actress or Perfect Blue yet though.

I remember watching it in a theater and some guy brought his 5 or so year old boy. Things were fine up until the "Rape Scene". Him and the kid stormed out of there as fast as they could. Could have sworn he said something like, "What's wrong with you people!?" on the way out. Great movie. Loved the brutal stabbing scenes and that relentless music that plays.

Just watched this right now finally after seeing this thread and I got to say I can't believe I waited this long. My first exposure to it was at an AMV contest years and years ago and I've been wanting to see it ever since.

Let's just say I did not expect that ending at all!

Good recommendation GAF!
