Life going to get tougher?

I have older people around me telling me how much life sucks as you get older. All the time. Yet, they always fail to explain to me clearly why when I ask them. So how does life get any worse?

I'm not a materialistic person. I don't mind being just a number in an office. I don't mind repetitive, hard work. These reasons could explain why I can't see a 'tough' future.

I know there are many older, experienced posters here. So can you care to explain?

less time to do things you like to do, more time paying for others to do things they like to do. Then you get all droopy and die.

Although life may seem to get tougher, stress is usually highest among younger adults and teenagers, while life satisfaction is usually consistent throughout life.

Dunno how old you are Beerbelly, but even in your mid 20s you'll start to notice shit not running the way it used to, either in you, or your friends. Almost everyone I know has started to break down in one way or another with their health by the time they are 25. Sure, it's nothing major at first, obviously, but that's probably the worst part about getting older.

Maybe it's just me, but I find it gets better if anything, at least at this point. Being a kid and a teenager is terribly overrated.

Life's gotten better for me.

Today's world is bizarre. In the past, age was treasured because it brought wisdom. Today, people want to cling to youth more than anything else. Ye ol' umbilical noose. Responsibility brings personal rewards. I struggle, but I feel so satisfied when I reach a goal or milestone. I think the rules of the game just change a bit as you get older.

Losing friends is a big thing for me right now.

Friends who you thought were lifelong friends stop talking to you out of the blue.

Friends get girlfriends or married even then stop talking to you.

Friends become less and less dependable.

Friends dying.

Anyone notice as you get older, people and family you start becoming isolationists? People don't like to communicate anymore it seems. It might not be the case for everyone but it's something I've been noticing.

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
It sucks...not necessarily because of personal things in my life, but because the world in general is just getting shittier and shittier. I honestly wonder with all the turmoil going on in foreign countries, as well as ineviteble natural disasters, if we're even going to be around in the next 25....30 years.

Heh, much of the time it more seems like young people - especially teenagers - see everybody else's shit outside their own little world as bullshit.

More like as people get up in age, they get fed up in general with life. Some part of it is the world, but I've seen a lot of it is also themselves. People get very bitter when they feel they've wasted their life, their time. The term "mid-life crisis" comes from something. You hit a certain point, realize a lot of things you thought were soooo important, so true, so the only "real" things don't mean the same things anymore. A lot of opinions I've heard on this particular point, pin it on the fact that when you're young you think you know it all, read a few books, get a degree that sez You Iz Teh Smartz. You think you know what you want, and what will get you everthing you'll ever need.

But as time goes by, people gain experience - all kinds. They see all the different perspectives, begin to understand (even if sub-consciously) that we are not living all in the same world, and they begin to see a lot of what they depended on as bullshit... and a lot of what they used to think was bullshit as not so.

Just one of the things that contributes to making people more miserable as they grow older. A lot of the other stuff is important too of course - from family and friends to social contact to health.

Yea, I still wish I was in high school. The past few months have been the worst of my life. I think I'm going to turn it around very soon though. I just need to get back to school and out of my house. Either that, or my parents are going to kick me out.

Excellent post, Kaijima.
Well, I shouldn't have posted such a depressing thread on New Years eve. See you next year! ( < 26 min till 2005)

Find something to believe in. And believe it for yourself. -Solid Snake

And there's no way to change the past, so why fucking live in it? You have you realize that life goes on and you need to make the most out of it.

I found that life especially sucks when you start really looking forward to a lot and get emotionally attached to things. I find life especially enjoyable when I focus on the small things I can reasonably expect, such as food, good music and another day. The thing is, even those can be taken away, which makes me grateful I live in America and am in the position I'm in. Learning how not to get angry when things don't go your way = pretty enjoyable life.

I'm in my 20's and I believe this- except at work where grin and bear it and hope you get a better job.

Anyway it's brand new year- fuck it.
