A group of European scientists took it. It is not a confirmed yet... It may take up to two years to confirm. But apparently it's very likely to be the first photo of an extrasolar planet.

Well, I just made reservations for Planet X for the year 2235. That gives us a year to find drive that can reach the speed of light. PEACE.

Yeah but it's truely amazing, this is the first time we're actually seeing a planet outwith our solar system. It's amazing if you just think of the possibilities out there. They estimate that there are billions of gas giants in our galaxy, and billions of Earths in our galaxy. Then you take into account all the satellites that must be out there, and you've got some kind of crazy number that hasn't been named yet. Imagine the possibilities for life, new materials, new chemicals, new everything. It's very exciting.

Also, Pochacco, was it you that had the licking lips avatar? Bring that back.

Lets see someone point a massive telescope to Zeti Reticuli or Thuban (in Alpha Draconis)...oh yea that's right the government will have them killed for doing that...

Zeti Reticuli is where two of the 18 known species of EBE's come from. A star in Alpha Draconis is home to another one (or two) and is believed to be the home of one of the species that blew up Tiamat (the planet that the asteroid belt used to be).

ManaByte is hilarious, yet still insane. I think I like him though.
Yeah he's always been really up-to-date on a lot of stuff, especially SW. I still hold a slight grudge against him for his half-assed job running the old IGN chat server though. :p

The thing that's REALLY amazing is that you can actually SEE it. This isn't an artists impression or anything. When you think of how far away the planet and Sun are, 20x optical zoom just seems complete shit in comparrison :D

Tell us more, ManaByte. I never knew our solar system had a planet called Tiamat. Is Alpha Draconis mad at us?

You all won't be laughing to heartily when you start turning into a gelatin cocoon to house an alien infestation now will you?

I want a like that lists the 18 known species, please. I'm facinated by the conspiracy theories. :)

For those not familiar with astronomical measurements, 1 AU is equal to the average distance between our Sun and the Earth. That planet is HUGE.

you mean hotter?
Depends. The color of a star indicates surface temperature, but a star such as a Red Giant may have a hotter core, giving it its size, while having a cooler surface.

Troll an astronomy thread again, and you're gone. Make your own fucking thread for that bullshit. The FBI aren't going to help you either.

Cool. Hard to believe that this is the first time that we see a picture of planet beyond our Solar System. It'll be aeons before we actually make any significant progress in space travel. :p

You never know when there's going to be some kind of break through...

We should really put our money into cool science shit besides weapons. These astronomy projects are run on a fraction of the military budget. Imagine what they could do with more resources. 8O Would be cool as hell. Anyway, I hope that's a planet and not just a large star in the distance. That would be a total cock tease. :lol PEACE.

Well you're obviously part of the conspiracy to keep the knowledge secret!!! ;)

I hope it is a planet that was photographed. The planet looks so big. Especially in relation to the size of the star (though being a brown dwarf, the star is already pretty small).
