Limited Run Games using Used Chips for GBA releases apparently

I mean it is LRG and between burning CD-R's to sell as a retail product for the 3DO, getting the voltage wrong on NES carts, never shipping anything on time and the rest of their nonsense....not really a shocker but wow some of the photos inside the carts look like two decade old recycled board pulls that are just beat to hell. A new GBA cartridge with that level of care is just wild. Sure if the silicon works you could say "well it works" but I've never seen used recycled parts in a new product ever before. That's way more of a "made it at home cart" vibe

LRG is garbage.

A pre-order I had for a $180 collector's edition of a Switch game mysteriously disappeared on me a few years ago. I said never again.

This is probably the appropriate place to throw up that 'shocked' GIF of Fry from Futurama...

...I mean I'm shocked...but not really. They had a good idea and wiped their arse with all the goodwill they generated over the years. Hopefully someone better and authentic steps up in their place.

🤣 at this rate about as surprising as the sun rising tomorrow or discovering water continues to be wet

Shantae deserves better. In fact make a life size plushie.

At this point I'm guessing the sites that sell Mother 3 with the english translation patch applied to it probably sell a better product than LRC does. (Yes, there's places that will sell you a cartridge for SFAMI/GBA/ETC games with fan translations applied to it. You know, if you want to play it on original hardware.)

Recycled Chinese chips would be fine if it was disclosed in the product description, but selling it as new kind of sounds illegal, no?

If they're really gonna try to preserve games they really need to tighten their screws. This kind of thing is ridiculous.

I still can't believe they have that special edition DOOM box going for $666, it's surely not worth the money at all.

They don't care about preservation. They bank on people using their releases for collection purposing and keeping them sealed and/or that most people will not notice their shortcuts. They then have such garbage support practices (making you pay for return shipping for their fuckups/lies when you already paid inflated shipping costs in the first place) in hopes that you'll give up before having them make good on what they've sold you.

But it's the number of the beast.

Because Doom has hell things in it. GET IT NOW? It's a smart joke because these things are related!!!

You can show how much you paid to your friends and have a laugh (at your expense most likely) so it's worth paying so much for that experience alone.

I can't help but I'm imagine sitting next to this guy at work and saying "how was your weekend?" And having him reply with what he says in this video. It must be intolerable to know him.

Personally, I 100% do not give a shit if a company is using some recycled chips. Even if they are a bit dusty.

Most LRG junk just goes straight to some "collectors" shelf next to their Pickle Rick FunkyPops and never even gets opened, let alone taken apart! I bet you 50% of people buying this shit don't even have a console to play it on, So I'm perfectly fine with them using recycled chips instead of just creating more e-waste, chips are pretty tough, that black outer casing being scuffed isn't unusual, it's a resin that protects the chip and it scuffs fairly easily, so long as it doesn't have any deep scratches that could result in thermal problems, the chip will work just fine and probably outlast the owner.

The original Analogue NT used recycled NES chips, and that thing was not "cheap" or "cutting corners", LRG are shite but this is a non-issue, and don't get me started on the market for recycled Yamaha sound chips.

The guy complaining about this probably also won't settle for anything other than a virgin asian waifu from the homeland.

The Doom brand has become so reddit and cringe.

All the damage they could have prevented by just adding a green sticker on the packaging saying 'made of recycled parts! save the earth!'

I never heard of this and had to look it up. With what it comes with, if you had told me it was $150, I would have thought, "hmmm, I guess some fans will find it worth it." But then I see it's sold out at $666 blows my mind.

Exactly! I honestly was interested in the floating Cacodemon more then anything else. But for $666, it just makes absolutely no sense, lol. Sure, lol bit and all, but really it makes no sense.

Even if I agreed with all that, they should still say upfront it is using used parts.

"but I've never seen used recycled parts in a new product ever before."
Before Analogue went the FPGA route, they used MVS/Famicom boards for their first two products and people raved about it. However, it seems like the issue here is the condition of boards vs the fact that their used.

Agreed. I saw someone on reddit also arguing that using used chips would likely be better anyway since the quality of them could be better than newer chips produced specifically for this title. Look at it like this, gba games are practically indestructible if kept dry and free from battery acid. The quality of these chips is a known quantity.

That said, I do think it would have been a good idea to disclose that recycled chips were to be used in this product. I personally wouldn't have cared (like you said, the re-use of chips is pretty common in the retro-scene), but many would have.

Can't believe a few people are defending limited run games, what next ****** cucksoomer? gonna defend poison in your food because you can 'barely' taste it? Doesn't matter if grandma's walker fails, she was going to fall sooner or later anyways, right? Who cares if there is a little bit of minimum wage sperm in your McDonalds coffee, nobody will notice. Who cares if the book you just bought is missing pages, most people don't finish books anyways right?

It's a slipery slope making excuses for dishonest buisness practices, sure today it's something not all that important like a video game, but what is it tomorrow? And why don't you draw the line today, instead of waiting until it's something important?

well on that one the license allows for it but it took them forever to open source their changes on GitHub
Thats not exactly correct, the GPL demands that everything is released, including the compiler and toolchains to build the source.
This however is impossible as neither Sony nor Nintendo allows open sourcing their toolchains.
Therefore even with the stuff LRG has released they are still in breach of the GPL.

That´s also the reason why no other console developer ever used GPL code!
