Linux is the future of gaming if Microsoft do not do something

Tinkering with Linux is kind of cool and fun... for a while. I always go back to Windows
People love to shit on windows (sometimes justified)

But the amount of tinkering and workarounds required, Linux is "fixing" the issues you have with windows when you could have just spent a few minutes doing it on windows yourself.

Don't like copilot? Remove it.
Think Windows is too bloated? Download a Lite version.

This is an important video and one everyone should watch. It doesn't show anything you won't expect:

Games on Linux using AMD GPUs run GREAT, while games running on nvidia still leave a LOT to be desired and remains the biggest obstacle to Linux adoption.

I will say this:
If you have an AMD GPU/CPU, don't play anti-cheat games, and are not connected to a TV (AMD in Linux does NOT support HDMI 2.1 due the HDMI Forums refusal to allow implementation into AMD's open source Linux drivers) I really think you should give it a try.

Why do you fucktards say this shit? Do you people never read history?

People said the same thing about tech companies like IBM, etc.

To be clear, Linux may never completely replace windows.

But to say "never" suggests you have not read one history book.
People are dumb sometime…

Neither of those fix the fundamentally broken issues. Windows is just straight up a bad OS with piss poor code, where an update is just as likely to break something than it is fix it.

For example, the recent KB update broke game performance that required an nvidia hotfix driver to restore performance. A Lite version wouldn't have fixed that.

And it only took Microsoft to be obnoxious obvious for gaming youtubers to realize that :messenger_unamused:
Now let it simmer for a few decades until Linux is ready for the mainstream.

People like to whine about everything until they dont have it. Remove windows from all PC/Laptops and within a month the world crumbles and people will beg to get it back.
Put we are cool, because we are against mainstream....power to the people and shit like that.

That's the truth, I switched to Ubuntu back in 2004 because in the end I only wanted something that worked, I was bored of having to rewrite config files and recompiling code.

You can roll back drivers.

Or turn off auto-updates. If a new driver is breaking things - don't install it. If it's fine, go for it.

Can you guys see a BIG market for people who wants a pc JUST for gaming ? Because i cannot see this kind of market taking off, if Im being honest (and i hope i can have a GOOD HTPC for emulation, so i am part of this niche market).

I'm running dual boot. Debloated Windows 11 and CachyOS. Debloated Windows 11 is a superior experience. Sue me.
I run WIndows 11 IoT LTSC on my living room PC....it's fine. But I cannot do a single gaming session without having to pick up my keyboard and close a window that opens on top of Steam. Bazzite never required me to do any of that.

Still WIndows 11 IoT LTSC isn't remotely close to a good experience, it's barely useable, but it is useable.

What do you go back to Windows for?
I went back for an annoying reason. AMD did not have support for HDMI 2.1 in Linux and I couldn't use 4K/120 on my LG C4 in my living room, which was deal breaking. So I traded in my 9070XT and went with a 5070 Ti...which I am kind of regretting since nvidia drivers still give me annoying issues, that I wasn't getting on my 9070XT.

If AMD and the HDMI Forum can fix the HDMI 2.1 issue, I will trade in my 5070 Ti for a 9070XT and run Bazzite on my living room PC and be the happiest motherfucker in the world.

What window? What do you have running in the background? I have a fresh install of 11. Firefox, BetterBird, Steam, GOG, OnlyOffice (do not confuse it with OnlyFans) and Afterburner. That's it. No other apps. Absolutely zero issues. CachyOS, on the other hand, is a buggy mess, especially when it comes to the UI around the dock. It also takes way longer to boot than Windows.

I think at this point it is up to Valve as far as how far they are willing to go with Steam OS. If they are able to make linux gaming a more mainstream friendly experience then they can probably gain some market share. That's probably not what you mean by "taking off" though. I think it could be possible for PC gaming to get to 10% market share, but that will take a lot of work and at least a decade or so.

But that timer doesn't even start until there is a stable of drivers that don't make gamers feel like they are giving up something just for the sake of linux.

I tested CachyOS on my work PC. I was actually liking it, despite needing AI to set up a few things... until I needed to install a network printer. I eventually got it running, but it was a total pain. Also, the app didn't offer many configuration options outside of the basic ones. Mint, however, recognized the printer automatically

Steam's efforts made it possible that you can do most of your gaming on Linux, so you can switch at least to a dual boot system. And once the install base grows it might get to a point were everything is not only proton translated but gets native apps. And nonsense like Lutris can disappear.
Servers are running fine on Linux systems, Android runs fine because its market is not really fragmented. Once Linux is adopted by more people the more obscure distros will stay niche and a few or even just one will actually take the cake. The current chaos only exists because the market has not yet decided, mostly just ignored its existance.
With Windows, Adobe, Autodesk going all into subscription modells, locking you into their ecosystem, and then increase the price, supporting Linux needs to grow, mostly on corporate level imho. Individuals have a much easier choice in abandoning Windows, but have much less reason to do so.

You honestly believe those children didn't grow up in a home that had a device running Windows or Mac OS? How many of you guys with children on this site can say your child has no experience navigating Windows?
Me. My child's first OS was iOS. When I'll introduce her to desktop computing, it'll be Linux right from the start. Windows is designed for complete retards, which is why I don't need to teach her that. She'll be fluent in bash before she touches that filthy Windows desktop.

I watched the entire video earlier and I don't know how you can come away from that and claim Linux is the future of gaming. Nvidia owns the fucking market and it sucks on Linux, and AMD sucks across the board, so on what planet is Linux going to make a dent enough to become the future of gaming?

I think he's asking for comparisons between Win and Bazzite, which the video doesn't seem to show.

It absolutely does not show it, and it's probably better for Linux fans that it didn't.

All of gamers nexus' pervious benchmarks have been done on windows.

That's fine, but a video titled "Rip windows", you'd think they'd at least put some effort and show comparisons to highlight their point instead of relying on people to be aware of or look up previous coverage.

He sure did use a lot of word salad on why he couldn't show it.

Linux is already to mainstream, force her into BSD or Illumos!

A more appropriate title would have been "Fuck windows", but I'll settle for what we got.

In other words (and sort of pains me to say that), whoever wants to gain steam (that is one hell of a dad joke) on this market... needs to work on making a stable linux (or bsd, whatever) system, with stable drivers and make sure the hardware wont feel OLD after 2/3 years... Do you know which companies were able to do that? Sony and Nintendo (god damm it, that is ironic...)

Contrary to popular believe, Linux isn't used by edge lords and nerds exclusively. Some people are just very conscious of data security, privacy and a sense of human dignity and basic rights around personal information everyone should have. And no, "debloating" your Windows doesn't fix that, not at all. I'm not preaching anything to anyone. But if you're trying to sell W11 to me as fundamentally OK operating system that you as the end user can actually control and make nice, I call out the obvious bullshit. You own shit on Windows, you control nothing.

Yeah, but they did so by closing the system which kind of defeats the point for a PC.
