Lionhead Gets Venture Capital

Lionhead Studios feeds its war chest with a few million pounds.

By Rainier Van Autrijve | Oct. 19, 2004

Lionhead Studios announced today that it has signed a multi-million pound investment agreement with a consortium of three leading venture capital firms: Ingenious Ventures, IDG VE, and technology specialist Add Partners.

In announcing the investment, Chief Executive, Peter Molyneux said: "Capital investment is necessary for any development studio wanting to create triple A titles and previously it has been the industry norm for this investment to come from publishers. However, we were attracted to a different source of funding as we felt this would give us more flexibility for future product discussions with publishers."

Antony Fraser, director of Ingenious Ventures said: "Lionhead is a leading example of British creativity. The games produced by Peter Molyneux and his team already captivate huge numbers of people around the world, and we hope [now that] Lionhead is producing games for consoles, there will be many more gamers who can enjoy them."

Ajay Chowdhury, managing partner of IDGVE, said: "The computer games industry continues to show excellent growth. Lionhead is one of the world's leading independent developers and is extremely well positioned to benefit as the technology changes in the industry allow them to create further groundbreaking games."

Following the success of Black and White, Lionhead's second game Fable so far sold over 1.2 million copies. Lionhead currently has a further four products under development with two more games scheduled for release next year.
This is very good news IMO. I'm aware of a couple of other independent developers who a raising major venture capital rounds.

If the trend continues, we will hopefully start seeing more independent developers creating their own new IPs, instead of slaving away on sequels and licensed crap. :)

Why wouldnt B&W2 count? Thats the 4th one, Movies is set for March, im guessing BC must be the other game for next year, not B&W2 (shame).

I meant B&W 2 is being developed by B&W studios and not lionhead.. I don't know how they're related? I guess you could count that too..

Speaking of Lionhead, Minter has not updated Unity in months. Did he OD?

At this point, does anyone think it'll still release on GC only? I can see a PC and/or other console version in the cards.

And damn them if they cancel B.C.!!

It is pretty much a one man effort. If he switched consoles now, we wont see it till next gen. Personally I do not see why he did not put this on Xbox to begin with, with the Custom Soundtrack.

Ref custom soundtrack and Xbox: If Minter wants some kinf of control over what happens onscreen, he must how the music goes.. Rez wouldn't be the same without its music.. everything is so spot on...

I dont think B&W2 is scheduled for 2005 at the moment so this probably does refer to BC as the second game (might get canned but they arent giving it away in this article). They havent even really given a in depth showing of B&W2 yet, let alone a peliminary release date (which they will obviously miss), everything known about it is from 2 or 3 really early previews and some developer diaries. Its probably a 2006 game, with dimitiri 2007 maybe even 2008.

Wow I hope this happens to more smaller companies. This is very good for the gaming industry whether you like Peter's games or not. :D

On a troll scale of 1 to 10, 10 being successful and 1 being complete garbage, I'd give you aro...oh wait sorry, this scale doesn't go into the negatives!
Funny enough, I wasn't trolling... it was brought up in a Molyneux interview. Possible it'll be a HDD download or maybe a new release (PC possibly too).

Guess that's why I broke the scale. ;)

BC hasn't been axed. There were some new screens released not too long ago.

I'm guessing that he's working to get it out as soon as possible. The last big break he had in blog updates was because of work.

Nice when the neighbours do well. :) Lionhead are just down the road from my place of work - if I were unscrupulous enough to record the conversations I hear on the bus, I could trawl them for some great insider info. ;)

I wonder if that Unity game is going to be any good. I'm guessing it's going to be cheap trashware because it's only made by one person (and because that person is Minter), but who knows.

Lionhead Studios announced today that its plans for Xbox title BC have been suspended. BC was being developed by Intrepid Computer Entertainment, part of Lionhead Studios.

In announcing the decision to suspend work on BC, Peter Molyneux Managing Director of Lionhead Studios said “The decision to suspend work on any games project is always a very difficult one, particularly when it is a title with the potential of BC. We hope to revive the project at a later date and will endeavour to assign as many of the team as possible to other Lionhead projects.

Someone sent me a picture of their shit

I found that pretty vile. I don't know what universe you hair-coated mongrels dwell in, but the one I live in - and you should really check it out - is one where when a person tries to give you a videogame, you do not send him a picture of your shit. Or send me a naked picture of a young man. Or, and I am not joking, photographs or drawings of your "Flesh Pikmin." When I come across something like that, I seriously considered pawning these copies of Pikmin and putting the proceeds toward a firearm I could use to make myself die.

Rofl seriously a new thread has to go up about PA's Pikmin contest, the pictures are awesome!

Personally, I just didn't *get* BC - for some reason, I never got past the whole "dinosaurs on fire" concept.
