Hey folks,

Users on iPodlounge have been heralding liquid brasso and a microfibre cloth as the iPod scratch savior. Apparently, if you rub a bit of brasso onto the iPod with the cloth (front plastic finish or back metal finish), it will remove about 95% of the visible scratches - even a lot of the deep ones.

Anybody tried this yet, and if so, any success?

Plenty of folks at iPodlounge have typed up very brief accounts of their successful results, but nobody has really bothered to type up detailed instructions and/or posted images of their results, thats all.

I just trust the GA brethren, more, so I'm asking here. :)

I fixed a really scratched up copy of Def Jam Vendetta(I found it sitting in a gutter) with brasso

It was really scratched up, I got some brasso buffed away and most of the scratches were less noticeable and the game played just fine. You probably have more to lose doing it on your Ipod than I did doing it to something I found sitting in the street.

The general rule when using a cleaner to "clean" soft plastic is to use very small amounts like a drop, and to work lightly and quick. i've used Simple Green to clean game discs scratched beyond repair before the days of Disc Doctor by holding the disc at least a foot and a half away so that the cleaner mist falls on the disc, then wiping lightly with a paper towel.

The iPod thing sounds like something to try on a store demo that's already scratched. Not that i would...

I would use "Brillianize" for minor scratches. Be careful though, it may make your iPod so slippery that it'll fall out of your hands and land on the floor. (You laugh now, but it'll happen).

I've done it. It definitely works on lighter scratches, and it doesn't do any damage. I haven't had the patience to work on the deeper marks, but I guess it would take care of those too. Oh, and i use an old t-shirt, microfiber isn't really necessary.

I tried this with my original iPod ages ago, but to be honest it was so scratched up already that it really didn't make much difference.

Brasso is also recommended for fixing scratched CDs. I'd say it'll work, as it's just filling the scratch and buffing it out.
