LiveJournal: Look at me!

Two questions here:

First of all, is it just me or is LiveJournal the biggest haven of attention whores on the internet or what? It seems as if the LJ whores have created their own sub-culture of internet brooding. I can hardly read a single LJ entry that doesn't involve the following cliches: Suicide attempts, cutting yourself, "glomps", "hugs", "wai!!", song lyrics, depressing poetry, quizzes that don't actually give you an answer but instead tally up the names on your friends list and assign them to certain tasks that in turn cause more drama, and the obligitory dramatic anime face icon with poetic text i.e. "hold me til I can cry no more", etc.

Second question: I know that there's an animated gif out there that sums up the LJ crowd with a "geek girl" and the phrase "Look at me". Anyone have it?

Hey I have a livejournal. I've just kept it going because my friends want me to. If I don't make an entry every few days, they flip out. I have the occasional depressed entry, but most of the time, it's racist, offensive, and pretty hilarious to my close group of friends.

A sort of anime fan-girl way of saying "I run to you, tackle you, and squeeze the shit out of you." i.e. I glomp bishies/bishounen.
Oh man, that's worse than "huggles"

LJ is the epitome of blogs that are the epitome of teen and post teen angst and also the epitome of what powers the web: people. The web and internet in general give everyone a voice, and a possible audience. LJ gives people a very easy way to make their voice heard. i've actually read quite a few LJ and blogs in general that weren't centered around the things you posted about. But like anything else, the majority of them are crap.

The really interesting thing is that blogs are the public equivalent of a journal/diary, which is mean to be private. A lot of people (myself included to some extent) post private things in their blogs as if the people they hide their secrets from can't or won't read them. Maybe it's the feeling of pseudo-anonymity that the internet provides. Maybe it's the hopes that there's someone out there that understands and will connect with them. Or maybe it's a subconsious desire for these secrets to be revealed. Regardless, it's kinda funny to me that people do this so freely, while those same people would feel violated when their secrets were revealed to the people they hide them from.

i had a blog a while back that i handcoded in HTML and CSS. It was mainly a way to communicate to friends of mine after i moved away from them. i'm sure i'll eventually get back to it, and i'm sure i'll keep the focus mainly to pertinent updates on semi-major events, and less the tired day-to-day drivel that's better saved to telling a friend or coworker face-to-face than posting to millions of possible readers.

I've moved on to Blogger. But in all honesty, I always end up posting a lot for a couple of days, then go for months without.

LiveJournal and all of its clones (e.g. diary-x) suck ass. SOMETIMES you might find one that's actually interesting. SOMETIMES.

Teen angst is everywhere on the net. It's not exclusive to LJ nor is LJ exclusive to teen ansgst. My friends on LJ have mostly actual "journal" posts about their day or often political rants.

PS: that animated lj gif girl makes me HOT
PPS: MySpace is a bigger attention whore haven than LJ could ever hope to be.

Eh, I think that there are some really quality bloggers on livejournal. It's like having a very personal one-way friendship.

On impulse, I'd say that's one of the most pathetic things in the free world.

But even I can understand some of the interest in reading, let's say, Jeff Minter's blog.
Other than that though...

On a personal note, I do keep a personal journal which I sort of infrequently write in. It's mainly a way to let some stuff out. And it works well. But I wouldn't want anyone else to read it.

Oh come on. It's an easy way to meet people, find out about their personality, likes, etc, and not ever have drama with them. The only problem would be if they stopped posting or slowed down. But then there's plenty of fish in the sea to check out.

Nice way to generalize. There's users like that out there of course, but to answer your question, no that's not the only type of LJ user.

Well, I did say on impulse. I guess I can sort of understand it. But the internet isn't my way of choice to "meet people". But I suppose you can draw close parrallels between an online journal and a message board.

My brother has met and continues to meet TONS of people through his LJ. He's visited other cities for concerts or when he was visiting various schools when applying for his PhD and stayed at people's places who lived in said cities. It's been an incredible tool for him to meet new people and has allowed me to meet a lot of like-minded people and communicate with people back home and the like.

I dont necessarily update every day but I check my friend's list many times a day.

There ARE good blogs out there, even on LJ. And alot of LJ communities actually serve as good help "forums" for alot of people. I didn't mean to sound as if ALL blogs were as I described them in the first place. I was only pointing out the ones who thrive on the whole attention whore/teen angst aspect of posting a "private" diary of sorts for all people to read in hopes of them clicking on "Post Comments Here".

I'm currently writing a script for a movie called "LiveJournal Philosopher." It's about a kid who discovers these unfathomable lessons (read: common sense, generalities) and posts them on his LiveJournal. He has a group of friends that all stereotype different LJ users: a LJ poet, a LJ singer/songwriter, a LJ historian, and a normal LJ user (little bit 'o everything). He learns that a prominent philosopher is coming through his hometown, and decides to conceive an incredibly deep question to ask him. I'm currently only a few pages into it.

Meh, I think it's a good way on catching up on what my friends have been up to if we're pretty busy and don't get to see each other much.

To answer your question: yes. Every single Livejournal user is like this. In fact, it is appropriate to call them "LJ whores" because that's exactly what they are.

Next topic: Black people: why do they all like fried chicken?

Haha, he just owned half the posters in this thread.

Oh, as for my answer, never used livejournal in my life. I have a blog, but I don't want anyone but people I know reading that.

1) I have an LJ and in no way are my posts depressive or anything. They're usually just "Yea hey, how's it going for people reading this? Here's what I've been doing the past X amount of days . . . . later".

2) I've seen that picture, some girl posted it in her LJ oddly enough :p

I have an LJ. Sometimes I use it to recommend CDs to friends, or just to get some stuff off my chest. Sure, I'm guilty of a few of the things mentioned in the first post, but about 80% of the people that are on my friends list are people I know in person. It's a good way of keeping up with everyone, especially when some of your friends are away at school.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I didn't even know what LiveJournal is until I saw this thread. Does that make me sad or cool? Or neither?
