Online Piracy's Great Comeback (a thorough look at the state of streaming)

While this deals more with streaming content (movies and music) I do think this will have a larger effect on games as they becoming a streaming first offering.

As a developer who has very limited options with how we can release our titles this is gross. I get it...people don't want to be nickel and dimmed to death with countless subscription services and within that more and more "tiers" of what you can enjoy.

The shitty part is that the content creators get effed-in-the-A in this area. The publishers are going to make their cash due to their catalogue size, the users might just pirate it...where does that leave the folks who make the content?

Not surprising. With the shift to each streaming service having their own content and not wanting to pay a license for old content, there is nowhere to watch older shows and movies that I like. If they happen to pop up on something, they are there only temporarily. I find myself flipping through various streaming services and end up just not watching anything. Basically back to watching DVDs again.

I remember this in the UK about the sports rights. "Sky have too much dominance, and charge customers too much so we're going to make it fairer."

Instead of 1 overpriced subscription, people now need like 3 subscriptions which is still more expensive than when it was one carrier. And we can't even watch 3pm kickoffs in our own country so a lot have illegal iptv or sat boxes etc.

They get what they deserve, and still push ads to subscribers too!

Amazon Prime has value, because it's not just for video streaming. When you factor in all the other benefits, it's worth the monthly/yearly subscription. However the cost is very similar to others who only provide a video streaming service and often offer very little on that platform that's worth watching.

Time to reminisce...

Lot of times I pay the service (Xfinity, HBO, Amazon,Netflix ,etc) but I can't be bothered to dig around to find which platform its on so I just load up Streamio; so much easier, quicker, and the quality is so much better. The quality on these paid services is such dog shit and there's literally 0 configurability for something you are paying up the ass for

They could learn a few things from what Steam did

It's crazy to me how much better Stremio is at handling HDR and differing frame rates too, like why does a piracy app offer such a better experience than Netflix/Prime/Disney/Crunchyroll which I pay for!

True but this time:

I'd hate to say it but damn ...
Companies have been unabashedly screwing over people in regards to what real "ownership" means. 🤷‍♂️

Cancelled all of my streaming subscriptions. Not giving them anymore money. 90% of the content is garbage and the rest of the 10% that I actually want to see I can just pirate. Fuck these companies.

I used to pirate stuff as it was just easier than the official ways but then the legit ways became easier so I stopped and bought all the stuff I wanted. It was great. Then streaming came and it was even easier which was great but I stopped buying things as everything was available on one or two services.

Then that all ended.

The streaming services popped up everywhere and the content got massively divided. You had to pay for a ton to get what you wanted. Then to Legitimize their existence, the massive content push occurred and it was often total trash.

It's currently harder/more expensive to get content right now than before and it's often lower quality. Many of the shows you want are not even available on any platforms in many regions.

I get why people pirate, it's not for me anymore but I get it.

I most certainly DO NOT download movies at 4k quality which I dont wanna bother go to the cinema or are not on streaming services because of retarded licences. I certainly DO NOT do that at all.
