Yeah some of it is probably filled because in order for me to extract the gmail invite link, I have to fill out a form with name and email address. So basically I created some stupid names and emailed them to myself

Yeah, this is because when we sent the emails we had to enter in the name of the person. So we just made up stuff and that gets put into the fields automatically. Nothing to worry about, write over it and continue as normal.

I signed up, although I'm still not too sure for what exactly. Is it just like an email account apart from all that search no store stuff? Does it only work gmail to gmail or can it send/receive from normal email accounts? What's this stuff about forums?

It's just an email account like Hotmail, except it's from google. It works like any other email account. Gmail is popular though because you can keep a gig's worth of emails, which means you won't have to delete an email ever. It also allows you to search through your emails efficiently. I think it also weeds out spam but I'm not sure
