Looking for a budget RPG for the week

Going to have about a week or so to kill while i'm switching jobs so i figured i'd pick up a game to kill time during the day. Few preferences/rules i have:

- on the cheap! Don't really want to pay more than 19.99 or so new, can be used i guess but i don't really feel like calling all over to find a copy :D
- i've only got a PS2 and GC here atm
- JP style rpgs. American style rpgs don't really do it for me (basically anything on xbox)
- strong storyline/characters
- no huge flaws. I know no game is perfect but alot of times games have huge flaws that just ruin it for you whether it be the combat system (FFIX), voice acting (Star Ocean), etc.

Skies of Arcadia Legends - GCN ($20 New)
Decent gameplay, awesome characters and story. Awesome music and exploration. Very JP.

BTW, it might help if you tell us what you've already played.

Hmm best i can give without giving a full list is that i haven't had much time over the last 2 years or so to just up and try rpgs (lack of freetime). So if it wasn't a huge hyped game i probably missed it.

Of the games listed so far i've only played SO: Till the End of Time and while it was a good game the voice acting ruined it for me heh.

Just the VA? Not the shit characters, story, or gameplay? ;p

They weren't an issue for me, my view might have be skewered though since i hated the VA as much as i did :D.

About Shadow Hearts, i haven't played the first one and from what i'm reading this is a direct continuation am i going to be lost if i pick this up?

SH2 was pretty good. I honestly got bored with it after about 15 hours, and I hated the characters, but the combat and exploration were pretty top notch. I bought SH2 when it still came with SH1 for free, never bothered to play SH1 (heard it was abysmal), and wasn't lost.

There is Tales of Symphonia on GC and also Phantom Brave on PS2 (if you like srpg)

You should try Breath of Fire though =)

EDIT: Dark Cloud 2 to maybe, depends on your taste. If you like random dungeons then you should check it out.

Skies of Arcadia Legends or Tales of Symphonia. If you can find it for $20, Baten Kaitos.

Not particularly, IMO. Though you should play the first one anyway. :)

Quick question on BoF: DQ, i'm reading it's a tad on the short side. Just how short exactly are we talking? 10 hrs, 20 hrs?

Well, to get the best scoring on the game, you have to beat it in under 8 hours. So fully charged up run should be between 6-8 hours. Your first run could take you as long as 14-20 (if you're slow like me). The game is meant to be played repeatedly. More is added every time you either die and restart or beat the game and restart it. More areas unlocked, more things to do, better weapons. One "playthrough", honestly, isn't how it's supposed to be played.

Baten Kaitos goes highly recommended if you can find it for cheap. An extremely fun game. It's card-based but the system works very well, and it's very fun. Voice acting is mediocre but bearable and story is rather basic but it has some nice twists. 65+ hours.

You can probably find Dragon Quarter for cheap. I see it for $15 all the time. Absolutely brilliant game and the time spent on it can really vary depending on how you play. La Pucelle Tactics and Phantom Brave are both cheap and shouldn't be all to hard to find either. Do some reading on these though as they may not fit to your tastes. Also Shadow Hearts 1 + 2! Both great games.

What the fuck. *forehead slap*

Shadow Hearts is the answer, play them.

Why? I didn't even like the 2nd, why the fuck would I bother with what has only been described as a vastly inferior predecessor?

I wouldn't say it's inferior at all. The only thing "inferior" is the graphics.

Well, you can keep 'em. I've got better things to play.

*resumes playing Grandia Xtreme*

Oh no you didn't. I'll take crap story + best combat system ever over gay, blonde, dumb wrestler-vampire bats. Ugh. That's about when SH2 completely fell apart for me.

If I absolutely HAD to give you one RPG recommendation, it would be Skies of Arcadia Legends, followed by Tales of Symphonia, followed by BoF:DQ and/or Paper Mario 2, followed by every other RPG released this generation. :)
