Looking to buy an Xbox debug kit, can anyone help?

I know I can buy one on Ebay if I look around, but I thought I'd come here and ask.

Anyone have access to one you'd be willing to part ways with? I should be able to buy it without problem, but if the cost is too high, it'll have to wait until around Christmas so I can build up some cash.

So, if anyone has one, or knows who I can contact to get one, I'd appreciate it if you'd be able to let me know.

Also mods, I don't think buying one is illegal or anything, but if it is, I'm sorry. Feel free to lock this if it can't be done.

Pretty much.

I'd rather have a system dedicated to development than having to constantly switch back and forth with my modchip

What kinda title is that?
What the hell are you talking about?

I was asking what you were referring to by: "Well, when you need somebody to design the official joystick, give me a jingle."

I assumed this was pertaining to your anticipated Wizard-Zombie-Ham shoot-em-up... but now I just don't know.

Thought we had some kinda understanding going, a kind of history. Like the kind of thing where when I walk into the room you don't say "Hello" or ask me how I'm doing; I just nod confidently, and you nod back, and it's all there. It's all in there.

But maybe not. I guess not.

Yea, I know you were referring to the wizard game. That explains you asking about the title, of which I haven't come up with one yet.

It still doesn't explain you talking about designing an official joystick. I'm scratching my head about that. What exactly did you mean?

I thought that with you, going whole hog, and me, a fellow with a kind of understanding, an official controller could be made. Something to entice the casuals and hardcore alike into the $80 version.

I was thinking a basic Hori style plastic box, overlay artwork by Kojima Ayami (or my firend Frank,) specially tweaked Sanwa JLF joystick, and two cherry microswitch push buttons. One labeled "Shoot" and the other "Also Shoot."

But now I dunno. I feel our differences have hurt my momentum towards the project.

I think he means he wants to make a special controller for your game. Cause he's an ARCADE STICK MONK.

This is all well and good, but it's gotten severely off the topic that I initially posted about.

I'm in the market for an Xbox debug kit from anyone who'd be willing to get one to me.

It's going to be used for any future Xbox homebrew development I do.

Anyone that can help, let me know.

Dopey, here's my understanding of the differences between the two:

A Development Xbox has a USB port on the back for a keyboard or mouse; it also has a Serial Port for Kernel debugging. Also on the Dev unit, there is a port similar to a Scusi port. It has a extra circuit board on the inside, slightly different cable (internally) 128 mg ram, and the software on the hard drive. A debug is basically a normal xbox, with a pin header already installed on the LPC bus, it has 128 mg ram as well, as a blanked EEPROM. Plus the Debug has a see through green case that says debug on the front, and the Den unit has a clear case with development kit on the front. Also on the Dev unit, the lid sits higher than on the on retail, or debug xboxs to accommodate the "extra stuff". Other than that the software that runs them if basically the same, just you can use more parts of it on the Development unit, such as the Kernel debugging, emulating, and the mouse and keyboard. The Development units are more for software developing, and the Debugs are more for testing, and other things. I hope this helps answer your question.

As far as I can tell, debug kits are just newer versions of the dev kits. They're about the same, just one has a BIOS flasher, and DVD emulator. Which don't have too much need for.

I shouldn't really be needing any of those extra features.

Whats up with just using a modded box?

its simple enough to wire the xbox via your network and then build a reset into your game to return the xbox to the evoX dash (or whatever) so when you finish testing you hit start+select+shoulders or similar. You can then just add a post-build step to your compilation that ftps the new exe over when you hit build...

Even if you have a problem using your current xbox for some reason surely it would be cheaper to just buy a second chipped xbox than it would be to buy a hookey debug deck? hell there are plenty of developers out there that do the same :)

I'm on the modded Xbox route right now, and I'm not enjoying it.

The XDK doesn't work 100% the way it should with the 256k bios I'm using for my 1.4 system, and I've got to constantly fiddle around with the XDK dash before I can build my solution or it won't send to the Xbox properly.

Add to this that with 64MB of RAM I can't take videos without slowdown (something which I've been told doesn't happen with real dev and debug kits), and that I'd rather not have to constantly be flipping dip switches depending on what I feel like doing, and it's just another hassle I'd rather avoid.

The cost of getting another 1.0 Xbox (so I can put a full 512k BIOS that will work) and a modchip isn't going to be the huge a difference than just getting a used debug kit.

For someone who'd like to tinker with his modded Xbox - is there a guide for switching it over to become a debug machine? Ignore this/apols to the mods if that request steps over the line.

According to the DevKit and Debug terms of use, and the SDK contract, reselling it is not cool. At all. You own the physical unit, but not the software and functions.

Look at the high bidder :) .

I bid on that this morning before I made the thread, but I only but $202 as my maximum because I was wary of ebay.

I then got an email later on this morning after I'd made this thread from the seller asking me if I was the Ecrofirt from GAF. I'd imagine he posts here.

SkinSider: You'll notice I didn't ask about buying the XDK software, only the debug kit.

I saw that, but without the OS and the debug menu, it won't boot. To be honest, I don't think anyone will give a shit, I'm just pointing out the fact that technically, it's against the seller's contract with MS. You yourself wouldn't be breaking nay law, far as I can see.

UNTIL YOU USE IT FOR HAXORZ! Or Mame.

Bumping for the evening crowd.

And maybe our GAF Ebay seller can get in contact with me here or something, and we can arrange a way for us to have a sale without you having to deal with ebay fees.

Technically, anybody who owns an Xbox debug kit by any legitimate means would be unable to sell you one without breaking their license agreement, and endangering their Xbox developer license.

No doubt there is official development hardware floating around as a result of various game developer closures and resources being scattered to the winds, but I'm sure Microsoft (and Sony and Nintendo) keep an eye out for such auctions too.

A bump in case anyone i the media or anything wants to sell an Xbox debug kit.

They're going on ebay for about $350-$400 after shipping, but I'm not comfortable spending that amount of cash on ebay.

I'm willing to spend if anyone is willing to sell. If you've got one, consider making yourself some easy cash, and if you know someone who has one, please talk to them for me.

If you'd rather keep the discussion out of the main forum, by all means PM me.

That's all she wrote.
