Looking to start a new Virtua Fighter character - suggestions?

Scratch Shun Di and Lau. Already tried them for a while.

Hoping to start someone who's especially quick and agile - fun to control.

Basically, please just tell me who your favourite character is and why. Or which characters you think would be best.

(I do not have Evo - picked up the regular VF4 today for $15)

Maybe I'm asking too broadly. Then:

Is Akira too frustrating to learn? Fun for novice players?

Kage? Seems like a good choice.

Is Akira too frustrating to learn?

Kinda. But I started to get him down after a week of GETTING MY ASS KICKED. Learning him is like starting a new game that's stuck on the hard setting. Well, at least I think so. He just plays and feels weird until you finally start to get into his style of play.

Besides Shun, Wolf is the man. Say no to Jacky. If you master Akira then good for you, he's a bitch to play, but I don't like him personally. Some of his moves are unnecessarily tough to learn. Aoi is easy to pick up. She's more of a defensive player, but I like her style.

I've been neglecting VF4 for so long(shame on me, etcetera, and so forth), but Lei-Fei and Vanessa are two characters I really enjoyed playing in that short amount of time... Months ago...

* Sai sighs.

Gonna go pop my VF4:Evo disc in now.

IMO, Akira is the most fun character to play. He is very powerful, yet fairlyagile and quick.

But yes, some of Akira's moves are indeed overly difficult, but nothing that serious practice cannot overcome. For instance, I find Akira's Dragon Lance Combo to be really easy to perform using the Dual Shock, but yet I have difficulty pulling off the move with a Stick. For some reason, I find it difficult to input the df or 3 input using the Hori stick.

Socreges, I suggest maybe using Lei-Fei or Pai. But in the end, you can use any character you want, but must practice using them a bit before being able to win consistently with him/her. This is the number one rule to VF: practice...a lot.

I still can't believe that both versions of VF on ps2 don't offer analog control. It's pure bullshit.

I think the regular, non-Evo ver. of VF4 offered analog control.

It's all about Lion, baby! WOOO

You know it, Lion has always been my favorite. Great blend of speed and power. Lion has always just seemed to flow with me.

Aoi! Aoi! Aoi!

I really don't know why I like her so much. I mean I'm not really a defensive person, and I can't reversal to save my life (I can count the number of reversals I've done on one hand....it's 3 btw), but she really just clicks with me. With no other character do I feel so comfortable, even after praticising them a lot.

Pai is my baby, but she may be too similar to what you are used to.

I suggest Lion, I've been getting into his style and he's pretty cool. So go with Lion, you knucklehead! Myeeeahh!

After much deliberation, I went with Pai. Took her through some training and then gave Kumite a shot. 8th Kyu with a 10-3 record. Not bad for a start. I find I do much, much better when I back off repeatedly. I'm sure, though, that won't be necessary once I become more comfortable with her move-set.

After you get more experience with VF4 give Wolf a shot he is a real power house.

I *might* be bias since I have been a Wolf player since VF1. :p

Arcade Stick >>>>>>>>>>> D-Pad >>> Analog

This man speaks the truth.

Pai is so freaking awesome, it's like breakdancing except you happening to be beating the snot out of your opponent.

"Oh you stike low? I think I'll do a little hop over that *POWPOWPOWPOW*"

"Oh you go left? I think I'll go this way now *CRUSHYOURBACK*"

"High attack huh? Ooops I ducked *AIRJUGGLESMASHYOUINTOWALLANDCRUSHYOUONTHEFLOOR*"

"Uh oh, looks like you caught me off-guard! PSYCHE! *PARRYSMASHBOOMBOOMKAPOW*"

Quite possibly the greatest character ever in a fighter. Lion is awesome.

Lion annoys the living fuck out of me. He wasn't an option. ;)

One thing I'm really beginning to like about Pai is her reversals.

But you already learned Lau so forget Pai for now.

How about Sarah? She's a female version of Jacky without much of the complaints that are thrown his way. She's super quick and has quite a deceptive style.
