Looks like RE4 softimage production screen grabs have hit the web

That's awesome, I really appreciate the link! I'm definitely bringing in this to class on Wednesday.

Any more of these types? Detailed movies perhaps?

Ha ha, the oh too familiar view:

Nice detailed shot, pretty cool to see:

Man.

I don't know. I've heard great things about Softimage when it comes to giving support to their customers, and it WAS used for RE4 and HL2, but... I couldn't stand what I tried of XSI. Just seemed like a horrible, horrible interface.

First of all... who is Softimage?
Straight from their Corperate Info page:
Softimage Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc, is the industry leader in 3-D animation, 2-D cel animation, compositing and special effects software, designed to address the demands of the film and commercial/broadcast and games/interactive industries. XSI is the industry’s first truly nonlinear animation (NLA) system that gives animators and digital artists the freedom to Make professional animation, visual effects and games - from major motion pictures, to cartoons and commercials, to animated content for video games and Web sites. The Softimage product family is designed to help users innovate, create and collaborate throughout the production process.

Basic Terms:
THEY MAKE THE MAGIC 3D SOFTWARE THAT RE TEAM USED TO MAKE THE ZOMBIES FEEL ALIVE.

(did they use another other software app? Maybe Maya or Max for models?)

Ahhh it's not so bad, I'm going through the ropes with the software right now and it's pretty easy to get a handle on. Especially if you're extremely well acquainted with Maya/Max.

I wouldn't promote this software over Maya at all but it's still pretty nice.

I've got a bit of the problem with the program needing such a high resolution without much of a reason. I know you can download layouts suited for lower resolutions, or I could just stop being lazy and ancient and switch away from 1024x768. I might try it again, some time.

Also, apparently, Softimage just released a fairly full-featured XSI package for something like $500. Incredibly cheap.

Depends on what renderer you want to use, really. The Mental Ray integration in XSI is far better than in Maya.

Well, XSI's a modelling package, so I kinda doubt they'd use Maya or Max.

Ohhhhh, I always run my stuff at 1280x960, gets kinda hectic in the endgame but I can't live without the detail.

Speaking about them using other programs, it makes logical sense to use just one but you'd be suprised. So many teams out there have such a divergent cast of employees, some are experts with animation in Max while others are experts in Maya, etc. With the simplicity of exporting and importing between the top three it seems to happen sometimes.

Sorry if the question came of sounding silly initially but I love knowing EVERY TOOL the team uses.

I've heard talk of that but I've never seen it in person. I'm pretty new to the program, know any other things XSI does better? So far I'm pretty damn impressed with it but I still love Maya. One thing for sure XSI is growing on me. Yeah I know, I should hit up the forums but I've been kinda tied lately with a ton of work!

Believe it or not,but SEGA uses Softimage exclusively. In fact,SEGA have released some animation and texture tools/plug-insbpublically(but you'll need to pay for them via a third-party vendor).

Right now,the only tools they've released as of now is a package for Shenmue

If you think XSI is bad, my old company used 3.0 exclusively. That's some linux-looking shit right there. At least it was in English :P

I eventually got it down and did a lot of camera work with it, but I'd much prefer anything else.

They also used Maya for RE4 (check out the making of video and you see a shot of the town with what is blatantly the maya interface)

and yeah I mean both programs are really good I just find the interface in Maya to flow alot better for how my brain works

the intergration is supposed to be much improved in 6.5

wow, someone who is really in the know in the 3D modelling scene told me that SoftImage is very rarely used for videogames and that I should focus on 3Dstudio and Maya.

Does anyone think this'll pick up?

The only thing I know about any of this stuff is that it's on some sort of timeline. So I guess I could fit in with the graphic guys and say that I could edit the finished product, but wouldn't know anything about the graphical process.

Softimage was originally conceive by a french-canadian man named Daniel Langlois, a pioneer in short animated films (Tony de Peltrie). The most ironic thing is, when he did his first version of Softimage (it was not under the same name back then), for his Tony de Peltrie short, he presented it to Microsoft who refused it and then tried to rip him off by stealing his software, but he won his case. In the end he was successfull on his own and sold it to Microsoft, who sold it later on.

He now does various projects like the Ex-Centris theater in Montreal that presents repertory films, all projects that are very succesfull. :)

Back in the mid to late 90's Softimage was pretty popular alongside Alias and 3D studio in American game studios. It has been used almost exclusively by Sega since the very first 3D games Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racer. They had XSI scheduled to launch near the launch of Maya (the next package from Alias) but it took them forever to get it out the door and many people moved to Maya. Now that they are both out XSI is really gaining steam, many people I know prefer it to Maya but its still to be seen if it will match Maya in terms of pure userbase.

I really preferred Softimage to Alias, but haven't used XSI yet. I feel bad, one of my best friends is one of the lead coders on it! But I gave up 3D to focus on 2D concept work.

It could, *shrug* who knows what's going to happen honestly

all 3 of them are really good packages

and to be perfectly honest with you IMHO 3D Art is 3D art, learning the proper way to model, so things move nicely for the animator, you know the basic concepts behind 3D art all translate exactly the same from one app to the other and all it is is a matter of learning an interface IMHO I say don't worry about what exact package your learning and worry about learning to right way to do things

but hey thats just me
