That seems like an insanely long time until the release date. Are they reshooting it or something? They already filmed a good while ago, right?

Yeah, but FilmDistrict has a PACKED slate. They've been picking up a ton of stuff. I'm sure they could schedule it in somewhere, but they are bound to have a reason for. That, or BoM is misreporting.

september is not that far away. reading the comments before i read the date i presumed it was like two years out, haha.

hated brick, but the brothers bloom was my favorite movie of like...the last 10 years.

so I'm sorta excited

One of the few perfect directors left.
This man can do no wrong.

Brick and The Brothers Bloom were both good, but not great. I'm still very interested in this.

Excellent concept, excellent execution I thought.

Loved Brothers Bloom too.

Most definitely day 1.

Last time travel movie with Willis, 12 Monkeys, was a waste of 2 hours. I'll be keeping an eye on this though. Can't go wrong with JGL!:D

lol, seriously? 12 Monkeys is a classic to me. One of those movies I will always watch if its playing on TV. Loony Brad Pitt is awesome.

Been waiting on this one, sucks to come in here and see it's over a year away still, but hopefully it turns out great. Brick's one of my favorites so I have a lot of faith.

There was a LA test screening last night.

Drew McWeeney:

Oh, my... what I saw tonight... ooooooh, my...All I'll say is that @rcjohnso and @hitrecordjoe are some crazy, crazy sumbitches. And you guys are gonna be sooooo happy next year.

From Devin Faraci:

Looper represents a major leap for Johnson, a huge step forward in style and scope. It’s smart and funny and thrilling, the kind of science fiction movie that wildly entertains while never shortchanging characters or ideas. Johnson tackles time travel with confidence; at first the rules are waved away, but eventually the ways that time travel works begins to become clear to us. The rules have to work, because Looper is tight as a drum, and any hiccup in how things work would send the story careening.

More at the link. And from a commenter:
I was at this screening too and loved every second of it. Absolutely brilliant film.

Really looking forward to this.

BRICK remains one of the most impressive first films I've ever seen and is still a personal favourite.

Brothers Bloom had moments of inspired greatness however the film as a whole is a self indulgent mess.

september 2012? well shit.

must be awesome to be an actor though, finish up on something like that and know that in a year you're going to be cool again.

I never had any doubt it would be great, Rian is fucking SUPER talented.

Yeah, I was debating reading the script but I think I'll hold off on this one since there seems to be a lot of twists and turns.

The first 30-40% of the script is really refreshing, but the remaining bits are pretty standard as far as action films are concerned. I don't really recall their being much of a sci fi influence within the last half as a matter of fact. I imagine the footage they saw came from the first act of the film.

They saw the entire film. It was a test screening. Just some effects that weren't done it sounds like.

dammit, i had an invite to that screening but had to work late.

fml.

Ah! I really hope they screen it here in NYC. I doubt it. Maybe it'll go to Sundance? But probably not.

Interesting.

Does anyone know if the script that's floating around is solidified, or if there were some changes made to it before production?

that is fantastic news. bounce back after BROTHERS BLOOM, which was a little middling. r.johnson is one of my favorite new young directors. him and shane carruth, who also has a new project coming up.

Mr. Beaks from AICN:

LOOPER is an intricately structured story enlivened by Johnson's trademark wit and wounded romanticism. It's an invigorating, thrilling, ceaselessly inventive film, a miracle in an era of by-committee studio filmmaking. And while it's still months from being finished, barring any postproduction monkey business, it's already a great movie. I can't wait to discuss it in greater detail.

Drew McWeeney of HitFix:

This is thrilling cinema, though, and Johnson displays a real knack for building set pieces in this movie, something he hasn't done before. There are so many great moments, some that pay off with a perfectly-timed punchline from a character or that lay out a series of great visual gags. It's a fun film, and several of the big moments were greeted by applause from the audience. There is an audacious element to the film. It sets up this big idea right up front, then a lot of other ideas, and then it starts to really tie them all together, and watching things fall into place, there's an excitement. It feels like you're watching someone attempt this stunt, and the closer they get to actually pulling it off, the more invested you get. Johnson's movie is incredibly ambitious, and it's a testament to the world he's created that my first question at the end of the film is "Are we going to see the story of [REDACTED] next? Because now I want to know." I'm convinced by this thing he's built, and I want more of it. I like the rules of his world, and I like the way he plays with those rules, the way he plays both to and against expectation, depending on the scene.

@gemko of AV Club:

Apparently it’s now ok to reveal that I’ve seen @rcjohnso’s LOOPER and it’s damn good. Takes a brilliant premise & thrillingly subverts it. (Rian’s a friend so apply salt as needed. But the test-screening reviews—of a cut two months further along than what I saw—seem to concur.) I should note that “damn good” is an extremely qualified assessment of a film that was a long long way from finished. My love may grow… It begins with a terrific, unique idea and then doesn’t go at all where you’d expect with it. Esp. w/r/t Bruce Willis.

Looper—Joseph Gordon-Levitt and writer-director Rian Johnson come to WonderCon to give fans a first look at the futuristic action thriller Looper. And when we say, "First look," we mean it! The panel will premiere the first footage anyone anywhere has seen from this movie. In Looper, time travel will be invented, but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper"—a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)—is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good. . . until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. the film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.
