LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS VOLUME 3 | Official Teaser | Netflix | May 20

I suspect you can plot the ballistic arc of netflix's change in artistic intent by the course of this series.

Vol 1: Full of boobs and guns, violence and horror. Classic sci-fi stories adapted.

Vol 2: eh, some decent stuff but seemed aimed for confused tweens more than anything.

Vol 3: .....most of the cool stuff in that trailer was vol 1.

KyoZz

Tag, you're it.
Hopefully better than Vol 2.

Will definitely watch.
Hopefully it's back to the quality of Vol 1, which was fantastic.
Vol 2 was pretty underwhelming

Vol 2 was a pretty big step down IMO, almost no episode was memorable.

The biggest issue with it, IMO, is that too many episodes felt like pitches for a Tv show/movie while vol 1 did a much better job at telling actual short stories.

Yeah I can’t recall any episode from season 2. Season 1 though…
I think all I remember of season 2 was the giant dead bodies on the beach.

Just started watching season 3 and episode 2 with the ship was awesome.

edit: okay just finished it. The ship episode was the best episode. The night of the living dead tilt episode was nice to look at. It was just a little too fast paced. Would have liked to enjoy the views more. The Kill Team Kill episode was a lot of fun and would have originally have liked to see a series based off of those soldier characters. The Swarm episode I thought was weird. Like you can only travel and study their with just a few pieces of clothing. The Mason's Rats episode was touching but should have been a bit longer in order to create more emotional impact. In Vaulted Halls Entombed was annoying and the ending was somewhat weird. Jibaro looked unique but I can't really say I'm a fan. Oh yeah their was 2 other episodes that I felt meh on . The first was the three robot episodes. It kinda just felt preachy. The Very Pulse of the Machine episode I honestly just felt was weird.

My biggest complaint this time around is that half these episodes just weren't long enough. Maybe next time they should go for 5 20 minute episodes and 2 10 minute episodes.

I found most of the shorts in volume 3 to be much more enjoyable and inspired than the ones in volume 2. Shorts 2,4, & 9 were my personal favorites.
They all had great visual styles, although the writing was better in some than others. Quite a bit of derivative themes and concepts though.

Short 2 was Directed by David Fincher, and his first animated feature. It was pretty solid imo, very moody presentation and disturbing imagery.

Short 4 was adorable. It would make for an awesome and funny zombie apocalypse game.

Short 9 was by far my most favorite. An inspired take on a classic trope with stylish presentation and awesome editing.
The director, Alberto Mielgo is a phenomenal artist and animator, love just about everything this guy and his studio work on.

Nice to hear it's back on track after that underwhelming season 2.
Will definitely be watching this weekend.

Season 3 is great and a definite watch. I found them all to be quite enjoyable and better than the second season with no wasted episodes. Jibaro is a little strange since it has no dialogue but I had difficulty trying to determine if the whole thing was cg or a composite of cg and live action. If there's no live action, Jibaro blows my mind as to how well animated it is.

I thought Bad Travelling was really well done and gripping the whole way through while a number of others had somewhat predictable stories but were visually interesting.

Hope they continue the series.

I feel all of them are very enjoyable, but only 3 are 5 outa 5 for me. Bad Traveling, The Very Pulse Of The Machine, and Jibaro. the rest are maybe around 3 outa 5 or so for me. worst one is probably In Vaulted Halls Entombed and Swarm. those 2, while visually nice, just feel like they have a lot of un realized potentials. still, overall a great season.

Nice, cant wait.

Nice, loved S1 so glad to hear things heading back that way. Also interested in what Fincher does with animation. Will get through a few this weekend.

Loved it, overall I really enjoyed almost every episode.

Jibaro just blew me away, truly next-level audio and visual work.

I hope this is how video games will look 1 or 2 gens from now.

ep1 : Meh, preachy and unfunny cat meme.
ep2 : Best episode! Cthulu Crab Horror ftw!
ep3 : Trippy & beautiful, but pointless.
ep4 : Miniature zombie diorama flick is neat.
ep5 : Good action but Predator did it better...
ep6 : The swarm, nice body horror, but ended way too soon...
ep7 : Rat genocide, probably some allegory for migration.
ep8 : I'd rather just read an SCP entry.
ep9 : The water siren was visually spectacular.

Overall very derivative and pretty disappointing.

Really enjoyed this season, it's what I wanted S2 to be like and it's nice to have this back on track.
It felt like we are back in short story territories instead of trying to pitch a movie/tv show idea

The best:
Bad Traveling: Best one from the season IMO, really like it visually and conceptually and it felt really well rounded as an engaging short story
Jibaro: The style, visuals and audio definitely made it one of the most memorable episodes yet.
Night of the Mini Dead: Short, fun and visually nice. I always enjoy the short fun episodes (the Christmas one from S2 was on of the few good ones)

The worst:
Three Robots: The episode in S1 was better. This one felt really preachy and lacked subtlety.
In Vaulted Halls Entombed: Wasn't that bad but it could have been better if they focused less on the generic swarm of killer bugs and more on the stuff from the second half

While LIGHTYEARS better than S2, its still a far cry from S1. The source material they used for the better S1 eps is just superior. Neal Asher is ok, but he is no Peter Hamilton or Alistair Reynolds, his short story adaptations lacked that final act punch of Sonnies edge or Aquila rift IMHO. Jibaro was visualy cool, if a bit hyper kinetic, but again, the overall story was just not as compelling. I felt that Bad Travelling and Swarm crossed streams a bit too much, a lot like the 2 modern mitary eps did as well.

Plus there was a distinct lack of sensuality, or the "love" in L, D, +R if you will. The siren in Jibaro def should ha e been stripped down, and why not take advantage of the CGI medium and have both humans nude in swarm if the climate was human optimized?

Technically the art styles were well done. They just need to adapt better stories and spice it up more.

I liked season 3, like others have said, its way better than season 2 for sure. I liked all of the episodes except for the last one. I felt it dragged on for too long for the story it was trying to tell. Also the visuals didnt sit well with me either, it creeped me out a bit. The zombie apocalypse episode was quite original and interesting to watch.

Am I the only one that couldn't tell if Jibaro was 100% CGI or if it was a mixture of real life and CGI.

Really enjoyed season 3, smashed through it last night.

Same guy directed the S1 ep of the girl getting chased through the streets. Had a similar photo realistic style, so I assume he used the same technique.

The only memorable episode was the one with the giant crab, everything else was mediocre as per usual with Netflix. The last episode though had spectacular CGI

Overall very derivative and pretty disappointing.

ep1: Three Robots: Exit Strategies: bit too preachy, you see the ending and the beats from a mile away, not really in steps with the other shorts, felt a bit out of place
ep2: Bad Travelling: someone played too much Return of the Obra Dinn, the art, the tone, the whole thing was amazing, just like the game
ep3: The Very Pulse of the Machine: I kinda liked it, it felt a lot like the martian + some mushroom on top. The visual story telling was more interessing than the plot which is not something you see often. I think it did its job very well.
ep4: Night of the Mini Dead: just long enough not to overstay its welcome, the tilt shift asthetic is nice, plenty of reference to catch on rewatch, pretty fun
ep5: Kill Team Kill: very heavy handed, the slapstick humour was a bit too thick for me, it dragged on a bit. It feels like they wanted to cram to many things in.
ep6: Swarm: it started great, I don't know what happens in the middle, wasn't really necessary and as you said it finishes a bit to abrubtly without hinting one way or another.
ep7: Mason's Rats: kinda the same over the top comedy as Ep5 but I think it was handled better. Not in the top half of the series for sure
ep8: In Vaulted Halls Entombed: Pretty fucked up, the starting idea is pretty great at keeping you off track for the big reveal at the end. The visuals are amazing and the action is very well directed.
Ep6 Jibaro: Really fucked up. I don't know if it is inspired by another culture of sirens or something like but the music and the very hectic nature of the cuts make it very dynamic, A bit too dynamic for my taste, felt almost motion sick at times.

keyframe animation

I enjoyed it's story but Jibaro is pretty astounding visually. I've looked at still screen shots of it online and you can tell it's CGI in that manner. But when it's actually in motion it's really hard to tell, really good animation.

Just watched Ep2 Bad Travelling and that was bloody top shelf. Everything in there was so well executed from the script and voice acting to the gore and animation. Loved it. Fincher helmed a great one.

EDIT: Blur Studio is credited for the animation. Man why didn't we get a Halo TV series with this crowd over the live action shite we got. An evolution of Halo 2 Anniversary cutscenes with Blur Studio could have absolutely shat on what Season 1 was. Given the rise of so much animation and CGI in recent decades it could have been something different for the mainstream too. Love Death Robots shows just how far that creativity can go for a series and audiences will watch differing styles in the same volume.

Will also echo how excellent Bad Travelling was, it felt like a full short story which I found to be lacking in S2.

Didn’t think much of Three Robots, too preachy, now onto ep 3.

EDIT: Ep 3 sucked, possibly the worst I’ve ever seen in the series.

Ep 4 - Night of the mini dead was great, short and sweet.

Ep 5 - Kill Team Kill had a slow start but got better as it went along.

Ep 6 - Swarm, seemed to be missing the middle and end. 🤷‍♂️

Ep 7 - Masons Rats, was alright, a nice simple story.

Ep 8 - In Vaulted Halls Entombed, very graphic, wasn’t too bad, despite the generic story.

Ep 9 - Jibaro, incredible CG, bizarre story.

regarding Jibaro : i don't know if you guys noticed but on many parts, it's like there's framerate slowdown ? Don't know how else to put it, it's like when in a videogame (i.e "realtime, in- engine") there's too much stuff/detail (cutscenes especially) and the action slows down...
I'm not talking about judder, frame skipping etc, it's like the rendering couldn't cope (?), i found it to be extremely distracting to be honest.

Now, about season 3 :
I did enjoy bad travelling and jibaro but...i dunno lads, this show keeps getting progressively worse, meme-y and edgelord-y, it's full of cliches, there's no real resolution to most episodes, it's violent and gory for the sake of being violent and gory and it also gets preachy in some shorts.
There's nothing "profound" about it, no real story telling and the writing is extremely average to put it mildly, it's biggest problem IMO though is that it's extremely mean spirited, i mean, i get it, "humanity= stupid and bad", "Bad shit is coming/future is gonna be bleak if we don't change our ways®" etc etc - and this is for the episodes/shorts that try to do some social commentary, the purely fantasy stuff is just violent and gory "' 'cause reasons" with no real commentary or vision behind them - the mini zombies one is the perfect example of this, it's 7 mins of "ooooooHHHHHHHH, AAaaaaaHHHHHH - splatter - AAAAhhhhHHHHHh - splatter" , as is the animated one with the mecha bear, sure , it's an homage to 80's movies/cliches but...it's 10+ mins of "FUCK YOU's", "GODDAMN", ExtreeeeEEEEEmMMeee violence and...that's it, it's like shit was written by some 18 year olds and what they think stands as "cool".
Also, that "fade to black®" thing the show does with every episode is tired and ads to the °perceived° edgy-ness.

With the exception of a couple of episodes here 'n' there, this whole show is way, way too cynic, mean-spirited, badly written and edgelord-y to be taken seriously IMO.

Cheers

Just watched Bad Travelling, that was crazy.

Directed by David Fincher and created by Blur Studios, insane collaboration right there.

Beyond Bad Travelling in my post above the other standouts for me were -

Night of the Mini Dead - Very creatively done and didn't overstay its welcome. Pacing was brilliant. The wet fart ending was a solid existential joke too.

Kill Team Kill - Loved it, took a turn and didn't look back to only accelerate and lean into itself. Enjoyed the characters, animation, army-bro-jokes, audio and crazy energy of the whole thing. Super cool.
