The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.
Why don't these people just take up different careers or something? They have kids and they still fuck around with demons that have on many occassions, crossed over and tried to kill them and their family? The Warrens just seem like irresponsible parents. After that 2nd movie they should've burned that room of horrors to the ground and go take up a 9-5 somewhere.
The first two movies are fantastic. The third movie suffered from not having James Wan as director, and was carried by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. It was like watching one of the weaker X-Files episodes, the writing and such might not be great but at least Mulder and Scully are always fun to watch (unless it's the John Doggett season, UGH).
So I'll see this one but keeping my expectations in check.
Conjuring 3 is enjoyable if you like the leads well enough from the first two, but not really scary.
Annabelle 1 is a total snooze fest. The one legit great scare* was spoiled by the trailer.
*
the main character sees a creepy girl in the room directly across the hallway from the room she's in. The girl runs at her, the door of the room the lady is in quickly closes and then opens agains and the creepy girl is now a crazed woman lunging at the main character
Annabelle 2 (Creation) is actually really good, some well handled unsettling scenes especially several moments where something scary is obscured in darkness but the camera lingers on it long enough for some viewers' eyes to adjust and realize what they're seeing (I admit, the first time I saw the film, I didn't catch what was in the dark hallway behind the one girl after she first used the stairlift, so the second time I watched the film I was even more startled when I did see it). Also, funny enough, one of the two main kids is played by Lulu Wilson, who was also in Ouija: Origjn of Evil, which was another horror sequel that was surprisingly really good considering its first film was garbage.
I've not seen Annabelle 3.
The Nun is mid at best. There's a few spooky moments, but the film just feels rushed and needed more time with both developing the main trio and building atmosphere. I've not seen The Nun 2.
Curse of La Llorona had potential in its first half, but dropped the ball in the second half (also, it's barely part of the universe, there's literally one throwaway line connecting it to the Conjuring films). The most terrifying scene is actually the opening scene, a flashback of the La Llorona woman while she was alive and had a family. We see one of her two sons come upon her in a stream…..violently holding the other son down under the water. Then she stops, and just looks up at the boy who just arrived. He runs…..but doesn't get very far.
