Had a discount coupon on Blu-Ray flicks so I picked this up on Saturday. Just got done watching it and the (4?) alternate endings. Great flick, and not what I expected at all. Really focused on the emotions of conflict (particularly the scene where Jim
gouges the soldier's eyes out
.

I thought it would be just another zombie flick (if you can call them zombies?), albeit with "fast" zombies like Dawn of the Dead. Pleasantly surprised.

A little confused with the extra endings. Which one was shown in theaters? Are any of the surviving characters from the first in 28 Weeks Later (my next purchase :D)?

Both amazing movies. They are one of those movies that I can watch several times a month.
Also, awesome soundtrack again by John Murphy. He never disappoints.

Really? I thought the first was the better of the two. Weeks is good too, but for different reasons. Lots of action and gore. Not as intelligent as Days though I thought.

I would definitely check it out, OP. Just expect more of a balls out, gore filled action movie than the first.

Is the 2nd one directed by Danny Boyle as well?

Watching the commentary was pretty entertaining. He's very articulate. Makes me want to check out Trainspotting as I've never seen that.

I do like 28 Days, until the last 30 minutes where the movie completely falls apart. Weeks is more of a straightforward point A to point B zombie movie, but it's really thrilling and entertaining to watch with some truly scary scenes. Also has the best opening scene of a zombie movie ever IMO. For me that makes it the better movie.

edit: No he didn't direct it but he was involved with the production. Rumor is he's coming back to direct a third one.

No although, that's not really the problem. After a good opening the movie sort of falls apart into a chase movie. Worth seeing, but it wasn't as involving as the first.

The 2nd one was awful. It focused more on gore and gimmicks for excitement, rather than ambience and emotion as was the first one. Besides the second one was LOADED with plot holes.

Not to mention ridiculous shit the characters did. The only thing good about the second film was the opening scene. It was engaging and a spectacular look on self preservation in the face of overwhelming odds. One of the better opening scenes for a movie, and not just those focused on zombies. After that it became a gore filled chase film, and it didn't do anything special in either department. Not to mention the plot holes and the retarded characters.

Oh, and Romero did the intelligent zombie thing leagues better.

Days was a really good film. The sequel, not so much.

I see.

I didn't really like the ending (kinda felt like the theatrical cut of Blade Runner), and that "real" one could've been a better fit.

I sort of prefer the upbeat ending over the downer one for this film although even then I don't think it's quite perfect.

28 Days Later is a film I had some issues with then I originally saw it, but over time it just stuck in my mind and gets better over repeated viewings. 28 Weeks Later, doesn't really hold up that well for me and I don't find myself reflecting on it at all which is the difference between the two for me.

Days = awesome
Weeks = good attempt

The sequel could have been good but it really lacked emotion. The opening scene was awesome but it quickly turned to shit once
the father turned into a zombie.

28 Weeks Later, watched it again yesterday, it's good too (amazing opening sequence) but flawed by SO MANY illogical things. Still worth it if you're a zombie fan IMO. I just hated the kids and the dumbness of the outbreak.

I preferred Weeks over Days too. The mansion scene onwards ruined Days for me.

Why on earth is 28 Days later released on Blu-Ray? the film was mostly shot with a standard definition DV camera with exception to the last scenes in the cottage which were shot in 35mm.

Yea, I thought to myself while I was watching it, "wait a second..." :lol

I would have to agree 28 Days later was the better of the two. Simply because for me the first movie took me by suprise. I did not expect that kind of movie. This in turn does not take anything away from the second one. Both is good.

Listen to this man.

Proper funding would have put 28 Days Later down as one of the all-time greats in horror history. As it stands, it's a memorable moving with a terrible ending.

The survivors were supposed to continue past the soldier's checkpoint (As no soldiers would have been alive in the alternate ending) to end up at the origin of the infection.

Is there going to be a 28 Months Later?

It was planned but Weeks didn't perform very well. I believe it's in limbo because of that.

28 days later was a pretty good infection movie. 28 weeks later was fucking terrible. I wanted to punch the girl, her brother, and her father.

28 Weeks has an amazing opening scene. I like both films very much - but I can't remember offhand anything that stayed with me from the first film like the opening to the second. Maybe it's time to re watch the first one :D

EXACTLY :lol

Stupid characters brought the movie down. I thought the beginning was great
ya know, the father/husband leaving the mother/wife to die.
but then the characters started doing the most ridiculous things. :lol I'm not going to get into it any further.

And they killed off the solider-guy. =/

Days is superior and i enjoyed Weeks, but i had a lot of problems with both films. The first two thirds of Days were brilliant, but then i feel it derailed quite a bit after that. Weeks was all over the map, but it worked well overall despite being a more conventional chase film.

Using this movie vs. it's sequel in terms of taste is one of my favorite litmus tests to see if a person sucks or not. Because if you think, in any conceivable way, that the second movie is better than the first or even watchable you are a goddamned fucktard of epic proportions.

Get over yourself, man.

28 Weeks doesn't touch 28 Days Later in terms of awesomeness.

28 Weeks is a good attempt but the problem is that the characters in 28 weeks are so completely unlikable and stupid. What was great about 28 Days Later is that their actions felt genuine. When they thought an idea was shitty they fucking called on it. 28 Weeks Later has some ridiculously implausible plot developments. However it does have an AWESOME opening scene which just about made everybody in my cinema shit their pants. :lol

Danny Boyle said he had an idea for the third that he had planned to set in Russia, not
France
. Russia would be better imo.

I'm really having trouble understanding how people can prefer the second movie. I loved the first 15 minutes, but the rest of the movie was easily the worst thing I've seen in the cinema in the last 5 years or something. I just found everything incredibly dumb. 28 days later just has tons more atmosphere and better characters.

Also, you might want to check out Dog Soldiers. Another UK movie, very cheesy, but fun to watch.

That was the most ridiculous part. He was the only tolerable one among the whole fucking crew.

That was one amazing
death.
Therefore I though it was awesome.

I really liked 28 Weeks just because it was set in the 28 universe and had some great scenes of the outbreak. It was like getting to watch what the original outbreak would be.

I also don't see how the first movie "fell apart," at the end. Basically all zombie movies need to end people fighting each other instead of zombies.

I actually thought the beginning in Days had it beat handily, a really cool setup and demonstration of the apocolypse concept, and the main character having to 'discover' what happened while he was comatose was a good device for explaining the situation to the audience.

The movie sort of started to fall apart for me as soon as additional characters were introduced, unfortunately.
