Assassin's Creed Shadows is one of Ubisoft's strongest releases in years and continues the studio's modern shift toward large-scale historical RPGs that began with Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Mirage. At this point, Assassin's Creed isn't just a stealth series anymore — it's a full historical open-world franchise. I had Origins as my 2017 Game of the Year, and Shadows honestly feels like a return to that same level of ambition. It doesn't feel like a routine annual entry — it feels bigger, more confident, and more refined.

Anywhere between an 80-100 is considered successful.

The decision to center the game around two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, gave Shadows a strong identity. The internet controversy around Yasuke being a Black samurai overshadowed what really matters: the gameplay contrast between the two characters is excellent. Naoe is the heart of the experience for me. She represents the classic assassin fantasy — stealth, agility, precision — and her playstyle feels like the evolution fans have been asking for. Whenever the choice came up, I gravitated toward her.

Yasuke, on the other hand, is a powerhouse. He's built for direct confrontation — storming castles, breaking defenses, and overpowering enemies. His heavy weight, size, and perfect-timed attacks make him feel like a walking siege weapon. He reminds me of the juggernaut feel Alexios had in Odyssey, but taken even further.

The hideout I made.

The campaign moves quickly. The central story — avenging your family, dismantling a cult led by a former shogun, and uncovering new regions — provides a strong motivation to explore. I finished the game in roughly 100 hours, and progression feels smooth throughout. By the 30–40 hour mark, your character is loaded with abilities, and the RPG systems start to click. Combat becomes more fluid, and you feel like a true shinobi master rather than someone struggling to survive.

The gear system

Where the game stumbles slightly is in pacing. At times, the gameplay, story, and cinematic presentation feel like they're not fully aligned. Ubisoft's trademark mountain of side quests, collectibles, and gear hunts can distract from the emotional core. Fetch quests and loot chasing — even for top-tier weapons like the Blodeshade Katana or Crimson's Edge — can pull attention away from the narrative. But this is also part of Ubisoft's identity: enormous worlds built for wandering. The strength of Shadows lies in its world design and combat systems more than its storytelling.

As a fan of history, I appreciate Ubisoft's continued commitment to exploring unique time periods. After medieval England and Abbasid Baghdad, Feudal Japan feels like a natural and exciting next step. The map is large and varied, and traveling through regions like Omi with its lakes or the castle-dense provinces never felt dull. The sense of place is one of the game's greatest achievements.

The ally system is another highlight. Recruiting squad members and using tools like the Oni-Yuri sleep dart adds tactical depth. Ally missions aren't just filler — they meaningfully expand your options in combat and stealth.

Overall, Assassin's Creed Shadows feels like Ubisoft refining the formula they've been building for nearly a decade. It may not reinvent the series, but it delivers a polished, confident version of what modern Assassin's Creed has become. I'm left impressed — and curious where they can go next.

What did GAF honestly think of AC Shadows?

Bruh what is this chatgpt generated wall of text???!!

Oh dear god, my friend was right. The amount of AI spam right now is 1x because only a few know or have access to these tools. It's going to clog everything very quickly. 1000x AI spam everywhere. Mail, telephone, articles, forums, blogs. Goddamn it.

I'm thankful to have browsed the internet which still had a soul.

Oh yeah. Totally bro.

Look, is fine if you like the game, but using Metacritic to prove your argument is nonsense. You're going nowhere.

And whats up with your AI writing? Are people getting so much lazy those days?

:/ I actually sincerely kinda like this game, though. I had to set a bunch of restrictions on myself and play pretty much pure stealth, but yeah.

I've been playing Shadows as well recently and it's surprisingly better than the recent ACs. It is a lot better in the story-telling department and maybe the best among the new breed of AC games (since Origins). The combat is also pretty fun and I'd say is second after Odyssey. Both characters are fun to use in combat. Fast travel is also a little better due to Kakurega points on the map versus the also available high tower points (which are a pain to come down from especially when in a fort). These points should continue in future AC games and be the primary fast travel solution.

Negatives include lack of RPG feedback to the player (no stat information, effect details, stacking, etc), the world being too big and mostly unnecessary, and perhaps switching between the two characters (combined into one might have been better).

Overall, AC Shadows is a really good AC game and is second to only Odyssey in terms of fun for me.

Its a really good game. I enjoyed it very much.
Dont let people mad at a company stop you from enjoying a game. People wanna be mad at everything- and Ubi is one of the flavors of the month.

Fantastic graphics ubisoft has a really good programming team when it comes to the engine like top of the game.

writing and characters are a joke tho and cause second hand embarrassment.
the discrepancy is unreal almost like a sabotage within.

I liked the game enough, spent about 40-50 hrs playing it. Naoe is a lot more fun to play, Yasuke is fun when you want to just streamroll a fortress but he doesn't work for an assassins creed game at all, the fact that he cant really climb is kind of a weird decision for an AC game. Still, gorgeous game and I had a good time with it, def. liked it more than Valhalla

Honestly, the only parts I really liked were Yasuke's intro (somewhere mid game) and clearing the map. Never even finished it.

Same shit as every Ubisoft open world game. Beautiful to look at, with masterfully realized real life locations, fun for 1-2 hours, until you realize that's the whole game and it won't get better. Bloated to well with extremely repetitive objectives, meh writing, and awful English voice acting.

5/10 game.

Yep. Putting aside the Yasuke drama, it's Assassin's Creed. It's only marginally better than other normie crap like sportsball and COD. It's like eating a McDonald's cheeseburger. Cheap, easy, dopamine fix, but nothing more than that.

I'm interested but I wish you could stick to the ninja only, it doesn't fit the IP to stomp around with a big brute.
Waiting for it to be added to the Ubi part of GP. SW Outlaws is there so AC Shadows should come soon.

Smells like AI slop. If you want people to take anything you post serious, then rather do the writing yourself, it rather easy to spot AI slop now.

The immersion and authenticity of the time Shadows was set in was a firmly 2nd place to the agenda from Ubisoft, so i won't buy and play the game and i like most Assassin's Creed's, dealbreaker for me and sales reflected that for quite a lot of other AC fans as well.

It was fun for 10-15 hours but the slog feeling start even sooner than the other ac.

Stopped playing after 20 hours, definitely worse than origins and odissey, more in line with valhalla.

Graphic is the only saving grace pretty much.

First 6 to 8 hours are good, maybe even great. Story is solid, good cutscenes, the visuals wow you constantly.

But then the horror sinks in: the story and presentation take a huge nosedive and gameplay-wise you've seen all this game has to offer but you still have another 60+ hours to go.

This game would've been much, much better if the map was 1/4th the size with drastically reduced filler slop.

game was okee while plating as Naoe ^^

too many sync points which didnt unfog map at all, also those copy pasted camps (quests which u take from safe house)

Yasuke uhm i dunno why they added that to game, no matter what race he is it just doesnt belong to the game (in my opinion)

Has anyone noticed that noticing AI feels like an organic progression? You don't have to try, it just kind of happens.

I guess the uncanny valley exists beyond just the way things look.

Full disclousure, i 100x prefer live and weekend/drunk threads to this AI slop with terrible sellout journos takes OP did here, 0/10 OP.

Thanks for your genuine insight and well-thought effort, man. I can add very little. If anything, this is a love letter to samurai dramas but with a bold modern twist for new audiences. A true return to form for Ubisoft.

the staealth is not bad imho.

Played on PS5 pro and thought the graphics looked avarage. It also played avarage after playing Ghost of Yotei. I stopped playing after a couple of hours.
Maybe it gets better the longer you play it.

Are you on sure? This game has one of the best graphics, sure the character especially npcs look like upscaled ps3 but environment wetaher effects and so on is outstanding.

Yeah, it's the same issue I have with the graphics of Avatar and SW Outlaws. They just don't look that appealing to me... it's the reason I stopped playing them.
The graphics look muddy. Maybe it looks alot better on a high end pc.

I found it awful on every front (well expect visuals I guess). Notably everything which has to do with the writing and cutscenes is truly abysmal

One of the worst releases of the entire generation

Yeah, people are seriously getting LLMs to generate GAF posts now. 🤦

You aren't writing a TPS report at your job! There is no need for that shit here.

I liked shadows andfound both protags endearing.

I was a bit pissed off by the combat gameplay and the few possibilities it gives you. Certain design choices were mindboggingly stupid (only being able to use 3 skills at a time comes to mind).

Visually it is stunning.

Concerning your hideout EverydayBeast EverydayBeast did you let AI design this too ??? What's with the ocean of gravel ? Do you rename your hideout Dust City every summer ?

There are some mandatory samurai missions though, right?
Yes, it's when you team up to get the story target, so it switches between them during, but those are just handful compared how many hours of content there to do, which you can do entirely as either character.

OP didn't even bother to take out the dashes lmaoo

What does this game do better than Yotei or Rise of the Ronin, besides graphics maybe?
